To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?

Most comments on Facebook are proclaiming it “genius.” I don’t think a sexual innuendo is that genius TBF.

Plus why is it a woman lying on her back with a t shirt saying “power” and a man standing over her dominating her. They could have at least chosen another sexual innuendo.

Also difficult to explain to kids.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Pornified society where male dominance over women is touted as the norm.

This just about sums it up for me.

I don't think it's 'genius'. It's not clever or even subtle humour, it's just crass, predictable and very tedious. Massive eye roll from me.

JustPoppingIn · 21/12/2017 17:26

It is rank and I find the use of the Power t-shirt appalling.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 17:27

The only reports I can find of Poundland being in £ trouble are quite old....

I think the people who put this together genuinely think it's fine and would gasp in horror if someone made a gay version.

DeleteOrDecay · 21/12/2017 17:27

Whatever you make of the rights and wrongs of it, Poundland has achieved it's objectives with the ad.

I don't think they expected people to start avoiding their shops as a result...

VladmirsPoutine · 21/12/2017 17:32

I don't think they expected people to start avoiding their shops as a result..

Except they won't. The masses aren't going to boycott a bargain basement cheap shop over a cheap joke. It's got people talking about it on a variety of social media platforms incl Twitter and Facebook and now forums. With all the good will in the world, you're very mistaken if you think this is how boycotts work.

Sad

WeirdCatLady · 21/12/2017 17:36

That’s gross! I’m nowhere near a prude but that’s just disgusting. Good for twinings.

lynmilne65 · 21/12/2017 17:38

And who the actual f could be amused
Truly skanky posters here 😑

PumpkinSquash · 21/12/2017 17:38

Meh. I'd say they've achieved their aim, everyone's talking about it, job's a good 'un!
All the Mary Whitehouse responses on here are making it even funnier Blush

BlazingPaddles · 21/12/2017 17:39

Their aim is sales. Plenty of examples in the past of ads that get people talking but do not translate to commercial success.

InionEile · 21/12/2017 17:44

Cheap and nasty. Fits the brand image, I suppose.

IamalsoSpartacus · 21/12/2017 17:45

It's vile. And it's so upsetting, and I don't care if this makes me the 'fun police' or a 'snowflake', that people are defending it and praising poundland for it.

I do shop at Poundland because I'm on a budget, and now I won't.

Vitalogy · 21/12/2017 17:47

I think it's awful.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 17:47

IamalsoSpartacus - good for you. What do you normally buy there? I wonder if some of it is similar prices elsewhere. I shop at Aldi and I bet stuff like shampoo etc winds up being same price.

BertrandRussell · 21/12/2017 17:51

“All the Mary Whitehouse responses on here are making it even funnier”

Ick. Just........ick.

BeyondAssignation · 21/12/2017 17:53

🤢

buckeejit · 21/12/2017 17:55

Yuck. Think trainings could have gone a bit further tbh. I domt like it

Kimlek · 21/12/2017 17:55

Tea bag is a slang term for a sexual act in which the male puts his scrotum into his partner's mouth over and over, like a tea bag being put into a cup of hot water. Tea bagging can be an act of male domination, which he might use to humiliate his partner.

Where’s this definition from please? I haven’t heard about the dominance / humiliation bit before. Is it general knowledge (I live in a cave it seems)?

I think the ad is vile regardless.

Yeahsureokay · 21/12/2017 17:55

I love all the bitching on twitter by people who don't want us raining on their female degradation parade. Their best comebacks? Implications that we are frigid, old, humourless women who only like missionary style sex! 😂

This is quite funny to me as a young, healthy female who likes to do unspeakable things in the bedroom on a regular basis. Yes most of the comments I read were by men. They honestly can't think of any other ways to attack us can they? So uninspiring.

I can enjoy sex and still find funnier adverts than this.

IamalsoSpartacus · 21/12/2017 17:57

Household stuff mostly - Fray Bentos pies, dogfood, toothpaste. I'll switch to Wilkos.

I bet most of the blokes declaring it LolZ haven't had an unwanted cock and balls thrust in their face by someone bigger and stronger than them. Of course oral can be consensual, but I've always understood teabagging to be something that's done to show dominance, often on someone who is asleep or passed out.

MorrisZapp · 21/12/2017 17:58

The two dullest responses to criticism of offensive media or advertising are:

'If you don't like it, use the off button'

And:

'Well it's worked because you're all talking about it'.

Reminds me of the short of thinking at school who were completely devoid of critical skills.

CrochetBelle · 21/12/2017 17:58

Jesus.

I'm probably the filthiest, most foul mouthed person I know, but this is ridiculous.

Well done to Twinings.

IamalsoSpartacus · 21/12/2017 17:58

Also, the original tweet has been taken down and reposted without the Twinings box. Suspect someone got called by the lawyers.

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 17:59

I think we all laughed like drains with S&TC when Charlotte told the girls there was a tea bagging problem in her marriage to Harry - and Sam replied "oh....just breathe through your nose.." Grin

so yes, I love that we're automatically humourless harpies about this. Confused

Tanfastic · 21/12/2017 18:01

I'm not offended by it but I'm surprised that Poundland thought it was appropriate. I don't find it funny either but maybe I'm a miserable cow 😀😆
