To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?

Most comments on Facebook are proclaiming it “genius.” I don’t think a sexual innuendo is that genius TBF.

Plus why is it a woman lying on her back with a t shirt saying “power” and a man standing over her dominating her. They could have at least chosen another sexual innuendo.

Also difficult to explain to kids.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

I don’t understand the advert, tbh.

The elf is teabagging Barbie (yes, I know what teabagging is), sure.... But I just don’t get the ‘lump’ part.

And more importantly... this made me think about how painful actually teabagging someone’s balls would be (instead of real teabags with a real cup of tea) which... idk, but this can’t be an add about actually cooking someone’s testicles, can it? 😧

I’m probably missing the point. I’m not particularly offended... but rather grossed out, tbh.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/12/2017 17:01

Would someone who finds it funny please explain the joke? and me.

TheRottweiler · 21/12/2017 17:01

Hilarious!

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 21/12/2017 17:01

Lame, depressing & misogynistic.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 21/12/2017 17:03

I'll be sticking to B&M and Wilkos for my value shopping from now on I think - although it sounds like Poundland's on the way out anyway so maybe a PP was right that this was a disgruntled employee's last hurrah like that Jamie Oliver calendar with the "interestingly" placed baguette.

Yeahsureokay · 21/12/2017 17:04

Poundland's version of humour was never going to be a win was it.

Did barbie even consent to this 🤔 And if it's only a doll then I think their next ad should be Ken getting the elf's Yule log in his chocolate covered face. Will they dare to do that I wonder?

Won't be hard to avoid this shop tbh.

blurredlines · 21/12/2017 17:06

I'm not offended. I had a chuckle and moved on with my life .

Mooncuplanding · 21/12/2017 17:06

Think they have tried to go for the Gregg's Sausage Roll Nativity basic humour and spectacularly missed the subtlety

Crass
Grim
Misogynistic
Missed the feelings of the time where it's not really cool to have women positioned like that

TenancyTroublesAgain · 21/12/2017 17:06

The joke is referring to teabagging - putting your balls in someone's mouth. Do you take one or two, basically.

Lambzig · 21/12/2017 17:07

Utterly awful. Just yuk.

AmysTiara · 21/12/2017 17:08

I dont like the way the doll has a top with the word power on. Seems to be sarcastic.

froshiechipandbrickie · 21/12/2017 17:08

Would someone who finds it funny please explain the joke?

This ^

I just don’t get the joke.

real teabags are usually dunked in hot water and the ‘not real’ teabags (=balls) should land in someone’s mouth area (during teabagging)...

but they’re putting the real tea bags in someone’s (=Barbie’s) mouth area which would lead me to assume that they’re talking talking about dunking the not real teabags (=balls) in hot water.... ehm. Help?

And what part do the ‘lumps’ play?

PavlovianLunge · 21/12/2017 17:08

I assume lump means testicle in this case.

Disclaimer; I have never, ever referred to mine as lumps.

apoppetonastring · 21/12/2017 17:11

I think it's funny. Blush

Yeahsureokay · 21/12/2017 17:11

I don't know if this has been highlighted already, but for anyone who doesn't know, the definition of teabagging is as follows:-

Tea bag is a slang term for a sexual act in which the male puts his scrotum into his partner's mouth over and over, like a tea bag being put into a cup of hot water. Tea bagging can be an act of male domination, which he might use to humiliate his partner.

I think Poundland have achieved their goal anyway.

MyfatheristheKing · 21/12/2017 17:13

That’s disgusting

froshiechipandbrickie · 21/12/2017 17:13

apop fair enough, but why? What’s the joke? Blush

(Yes, I’m probably slightly overinvested. But I’m honestly rather confused and grossed out. Urgh, cooked balls. Is that the joke?)

BarbarianMum · 21/12/2017 17:14

As far as I can see its "funny" because its an image of a female (doll) wearing a feminist slogan being sexually degraded by a male (doll). Merry Misogynistic Christmas!

speakerwoofers · 21/12/2017 17:16

Good on Twinings. Thank you to those who showed their support on Twitter.

There's been a whole series of them, summarised here:

Idreamofalandrover · 21/12/2017 17:16

Yeah I agree, I don't like it but it's a job well done for poundland.

They are an American company so I don't use them anyway.

froshiechipandbrickie · 21/12/2017 17:18

Barbarian mum

Ok, in this case I’ve completely missed the mark. Because I kind of assumed that the doll would symbolise a hot cup of water whereas the bag someone’s actual private parts. Which would make this... rather violent as well. Anyhow, both ‘jokes’ are shit. (Degrading a woman or cooking male bits...)

StealthNinjaMum · 21/12/2017 17:20

I had never heard of the term teabagging until I opened this thread. Thank you mums net for teaching me something new.

SwedishEdith · 21/12/2017 17:21

This is some 'slick' marketeer presuming everyone who shops in Poundland is a dumbass

Exactly. Bantz, innit.

BrownLiverSpot · 21/12/2017 17:21

Nothing wrong with a bit of good old fashioned sexual degradation of females, never did anyone any harm in the old days right? I wouldn't be happy for my DS or DD to think that's an approriate advert and that anyone who is offended by it is humourless.
