Love:
Band Aid - the original. Star studded, catchy, love watching Bono diva his way through his "big line" which I bet he fought tooth and nail to get!
For something a little more soulful, Walking in the Air. Beautiful, mystical, just perfect.

Hate:
All i want for Christmas (is you): fuck off Mariah, Christmas isn't about you and what you want and getting your leg over.
Santa Baby: see above. And Santa isn't a "cutie". Also, infantilising women much?

It doesn't matter whether it was a great song or not, the intentions were good when it was made- that's what mattered then, and that's why it still gets played, because people remember the spirit in which it was produced. Bob himself has since become disheartened with the plight in Ethiopia, but when he made the record he truly believed he could help and that showed in the song.

Fresta · 22/12/2017 07:48

FGS, how can anyone hate people who are trying to do good, however misguided. George Michael also donated all profits from Last Christmas in the same year to the Band Aid charity.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 22/12/2017 07:54

I HATE santa baby so much.

It's father Christmas. STOP TRYING TO BE SEXY.

The people who like this song, are the kind of people who dress up as as 'sexy' Mrs Claus at Christmas. A 'sexy' pussy cat at Halloween. A 'sexy' school girl for charity events etc.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 22/12/2017 07:55

Oh, and obvs the best Christmas song is Shakin Steven, Merry Christmas, Everyone Xmas Grin

Fresta · 22/12/2017 07:58

Oh yes,I love Shakey!

LavenderJamMyArse · 22/12/2017 08:18

I was only recently that I actually properly listened to the lyrics of Baby It’s Cold Outside Confused
Have noticed it doesn’t seem to be getting as much radio play these days but seriously?! How I didn’t notice how bloody awful it is is beyond me.

LavenderJamMyArse · 22/12/2017 08:19

The Darkness - Don't Let The Bells End is my fave Christmas tune!

I can't bear Fairytale of New York.

MsGameandWatching · 22/12/2017 08:37

I still like Band Aid, can't help it. All my eighties pop idols on one song.

I've rather a soft spot for Winters Tale by David Essex myself - my god that man was hot!

Cliff is the WORST. I always put Christmas music on on Christmas Day while we are opening presents and without fail, just as we are all content and happy that selfish fucker pops up and puts a damper on things.

Crumbs1 · 22/12/2017 08:44

Treaclesoda. You have it exactly. It was ground breaking. It did raise money for the catastrophic famine. Babies did get plumpy nut because of it. It was a massive fundraiser at a time when social media didn’t exist. It genuinely funded the gift of life.
Patronising lyrics or not Ethiopia needed an immediate and very costly response. Judging the lyrics wouldn’t have done that. Arguing the toss about where exactly snow falls wouldn’t have done that. Debating when Ethiopia celebrates Christmas Wouldnt have done that.

Can’t beat Boney M at Christmas.

CrackersForlt · 22/12/2017 08:45

This is the best Christmas song of all time :

Sorry for the rubbish link

Makeitso · 22/12/2017 11:15

Crumbs did you not see Blatherskite's link above.* It's pretty shocking.*

Makeitso · 22/12/2017 11:15

Oops bold fail

dontquotemeondailymail · 22/12/2017 11:31

My favourite is Shakin Stevens, merry xmas everyone! Bless Shaky and his cosy jumpers

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2017 11:31

Any votes for "Santa's a Scotsman"? Not Scottish myself but I love it!

SistersOfPercy · 22/12/2017 12:10

Agree with The Darkness.

Justin Hawkins mission to get the words 'Bell End' into the charts was a complete success. Now if only people realised what 'Growing on Me' means as well 😂

MipMipMip · 22/12/2017 12:17

Morning did you see Stop The Cavalry done "live" on This Morning. Well worth a google -& although you're likely to be laughing too loud to hear it.

Also worth a google is Michael Bible's version of Santa Baby or Santa Buddy as he did it. Did it as a bloke's Christmas list.

Rachie1986 · 22/12/2017 12:20

Yes. You are right!

Also love East 17 Stay another day.

Rachie1986 · 22/12/2017 12:24

twiney I like that bit but even more like the bit after that

"You took my dreams from me when I first found them.
I kept them with me babe, I put them with my own"

Love love love!

Allthetuppences · 22/12/2017 12:27

Sorry. Band Aid was patronising when I was only 10 years old. It's embarrassing. Donate to charity. Hell yes. Listen to priviledged chinless wonders singing about the plight of people they don't know? Fuck no.

ButchyRestingFace · 22/12/2017 12:32

I don't actively disagree. However, to paraphrase the great Tim Minchin:

🎵 bits of the song has nice chords
but the lyrics are dodgy 🎵

Batteriesallgone · 22/12/2017 14:15

I think BandAid bugs me because for me it kind of signifies the move away from post-war attitudes of ‘pay your taxes honestly and hold governments to account to distribute wealth’ towards more modern ‘its ok you don’t have to pay your taxes as long as you get all ‘sad face’ about individual charities, and while we’re at it let’s not bother voting’ which has led to the shit-storm ‘big society’ crap.

I dunno I’m probably wrong. But I just don’t think Bono doing BandAid makes up for him not paying much tax. And the fact he was held up as a hero while hiding his wealth just seems so...wrong.
