Love:
Band Aid - the original. Star studded, catchy, love watching Bono diva his way through his "big line" which I bet he fought tooth and nail to get!
For something a little more soulful, Walking in the Air. Beautiful, mystical, just perfect.

Hate:
All i want for Christmas (is you): fuck off Mariah, Christmas isn't about you and what you want and getting your leg over.
Santa Baby: see above. And Santa isn't a "cutie". Also, infantilising women much?

If we are mentioning shit Xmas songs, I fucking LOATHE Fairytale of New York. What I hate more though is people who sing along and practically shout the "sweary" bits as if they are being edgy and cool. They just look like dicks. Its a horrible song with a horrible meaning, the only good thing about it is Kirsty MacColls voice.

IMNVHO Wink

@PyongyangKipperbang

I fucking LOVE that song!!! You would hate me, I dont shout the swearing parts but I do an Irish accent for "cars big as bars".

Love this part:
I coulda been someone...
Well so could anyone!

So much in those 2 lines

Thank goodness I’m not the only one with a deeply felt hate for that awful Band Aid song! I can’t believe how bloody patronising it is, how can it still be played today?!?

I have not been able to listen to the radio for a while because all those overly sweet offerings just make me want to Xmas Envy (not envy) and punch people. Tbh, apart from proper carols, sung in church, I can only tolerate The Pogues.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/12/2017 16:16

No!!!! Dont do the accent, that pisses me off even more!

I am Irish on my dad's side, if you did that at a family party of ours you would not be popular!

peachgreen · 21/12/2017 16:23

I agree @PyongyangKipperbang. Can't really believe a song that contains the F word is still widely played. Embarrassing. The Band Aid song was well-intentioned at the time but it's definitely time for it to go now - very patronising. There was a great thread on Twitter about it recently: https://mobile.twitter.com/kelechnekoff/status/940515755342385152

I have a secret soft spot for A Spaceman Came Travelling. Grin Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is my all-time fave though.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/12/2017 16:29

I think that its ok to keep playing Band Aid as they still get royalties, it was never a great song but as long as they still get money I am ok with it.

I like A Spaceman too!

ToadOfSadness · 21/12/2017 16:33

Phil Collins has always looked like Phil Collins

He always reminds me of a London black cabbie. Irrational but true.

NotACleverName · 21/12/2017 16:34

Do They Know It’s Christmas is awful, patronising, white saviour bollocks.

All I Want For Christmas is awesome.

YABU.

amusedbush · 21/12/2017 16:35

young Sting cannot hold a candle to young or old Paul Young.

My FIL was the absolute spit of Paul Young in the late 80's/early 90's.

Thankfully I don't see the attraction Grin

dotdotdotmustdash · 21/12/2017 16:36

I love the Bandaid song, even though it's lyrics don't stand as politically correct or even tasteful these days. It was conceived, written and produced very, very quickly and achieved a huge sum of money in a short space of time. They weren't setting out to write a classic, they just wanted to raise awareness and cash very quickly. Job done.

morningtoncrescent62 · 21/12/2017 16:44

I've always hated the BandAid song, so patronising. Do they know it's Christmas? More to the point, in the non-Christian parts of the continent, do they care?

I quite like Fairytale of New York, but the best Christmas song ever has to be .

Cleanermaidcook · 21/12/2017 16:46

Cheesy crap but god love them all in their 80's baggy tops and the hair!
Paul Young was god though, always will be..

Love Fairytale of New York and East17's Stay in their furry parkers, oh and Frankie Goes To Hollywoods Power of Love 80's/90's nostalgia kicking in
Can't stand Maria and her wobbly vocal cords - just stick to 1 note at a time woman!

Fresta · 21/12/2017 16:47

I love Band Aid for the spirit that was behind it at the time it was made. It wouldn't work today, but the song holds special sentiments for those that were youngsters in 1984. It gives me goose pimples every time I hear it. I can't imagine anyone who came upon the song at a later date 'feeling it' though.

Last Christmas is my fave.

CurryWorst · 21/12/2017 16:51

Santa Baby: see above. And Santa isn't a "cutie". Also, infantilising women much?

It's from 1953 so its hardly going to be very 21st century, but if you think its infantilising I don't think you understood it!

CurryWorst · 21/12/2017 16:53

"well tonight thank god its them instead of you

Charming

Thats another one people don't get. They aren't actually saying thank god its them and not you, they are saying "look at you there doing nothing thinking that you're glad its' not you, give some fucking money at least you rich bollox".

Blatherskite · 21/12/2017 16:57

BandAid did at least as much harm as it did good - www.spin.com/featured/live-aid-the-terrible-truth-ethiopia-bob-geldof-feature/

Plus the lyrics are just appalling.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 21/12/2017 16:59

That 'well so could anyone!' line in FONY is my favourite too. Best bit.

What about that Pretenders song? It's so droney it makes my teeth curl.

'He's goooowwwwwwnneeeeeee on oh on oh on, 2000 miii hiiiii hi hi I ilessss. It's very far!'

Yes it is. It's exactly the sort of distance I might consider if I had to listen to that in my way on a daily basis.

Sarahh2014 · 21/12/2017 17:01

Hate band aid.But I HATE wonderful Christmas time by Paul McCartney fucking hate it

Heregoeseverything · 21/12/2017 17:03

I enjoy listening to Band Aid just to laugh at the lyrics. Hilariously condescending and inaccurate. "Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow..."

Erm, the Nile?

hollygolipo · 21/12/2017 17:05

Nothing can be worse than Cliff Richard singing Mistletoe and Wine... then again there's Jonah Louie. I hate Band Aid; but am very fond of Chris Rea "Driving Home for Christmas". I've got multiple ear worms now....

TriskaiDeckTheHallsia · 21/12/2017 17:16

When I was little I thought "Thank God it's them instead of you" was such a horrible line, then I realised the gist is 'you should be thankful that you're in a better place than them' and not 'phew, it's happening to someone else instead of you'- I only knew 'thank god' as an exclaimation and hadn't thought about the fact it could also be literal. Still not a fan of the song for reasons others have listed though.

ButchyRestingFace · 21/12/2017 17:28

Band Aid - the original. Star studded, catchy, love watching Bono diva his way through his "big line" which I bet he fought tooth and nail to get!

I’m sure I remember reading him say he really didn’t want to sign that line.

LittleMissBrainy · 21/12/2017 17:31

Band aid is brilliant for the memories. Although having listened to the little remembered Band Aid 2 earlier this week, my favourite version of 'the line' is actually Matt Goss and Jason Donovan! It's brilliant, much better than Bono, in all the versions!

My favourite Christmas songs though are Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC, and Silver Bells by the Bublé, I have eclectic taste!

Tinselistacky · 21/12/2017 17:42

Mission according to my local station last week that was per each playing!
