To go to the hairdressers with dirty hair

IamSerena · 19/12/2017 14:08

I washed it on Friday Blush and I have an appointment to have it coloured today.
Will the hairdresser be disgusted?! I've heard it's better to be slightly dirty when having it coloured but maybe 4 days is too much Confused
The colour seems to fade very quickly anyway and I want it to last longer than usual
Advice from hairdressers would be much appreciated!!

Perfectly reasonable. Will they wash it? Mine is very long and thick and wouldn't even be dirty on day 4.

LordEmsworth · 19/12/2017 14:26

Surely if your hair is dirty, it will be harder for the colour to penetrate? You'll just be colouring the dirt...

theimportanceofbeinghappy · 19/12/2017 14:29

lord

The hair's natural oils make it easier to colour so "dirty" hair is better. This is what my hairdresser told me

PS your hair isn't dirty as such. It's just a bit greasy I'd imagine

DrunkenUnicorn · 19/12/2017 14:32

I would be too embarrassed but I guess it depends on your hair?

By day four I’d look like an oil slick that had been dragged through a hedge backwards. But I know of people that can make a blow dry last nearly a week and still look nice so I guess it depends on how your hair responds to not being washed.

Scottishlassie81 · 19/12/2017 14:40

I wouldn't wash mine before I go. I'll just spend time washing, drying and straightening it for them to do it again as part of the service.

Other folk are right. Greasy hair is better as natural oils protect your hair a bit from the colouring process.

Have a lovely haircut! I'm jealous.

taratill · 19/12/2017 14:45

I wash my hair about once a week because it is so thick and quite dry/ course naturally, washing it too regularly makes it more dry as it strips the natural oils. I definitely wouldn't consider leaving it 4 days to be disgusting and I would expect the hairdresser to wash it as it's part of her job.

Malbecfan · 19/12/2017 14:50

Mine always tells me it's better to colour it when it's been a few days since washing it, so I gladly oblige Wink

user1493413286 · 19/12/2017 14:51

Unless it’s hold the comb up greasy I’d go as it’d be a waste of time

crackerjacket · 19/12/2017 14:55

Well, mine would be a total grease ball if I hadn't washed it since Friday but everyone is different. it's mega oily though.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/12/2017 15:04

I always try to go with dirty hair - my hair recovers from the colour quicker and I also like the transformation from pony-tail-of-shame to shiny root-free hair.

Ashamedandblamed · 19/12/2017 15:05

Unless she has actual cow shit on her head this is just ridiculous.

The colour will still dye your hair regardless if you washed it today or last week.

It will be fine. She wears gloves and uses professional dye. It's not an issue.

Tink2007 · 19/12/2017 15:08

My hairdresser has always told me to not wash it before I go to the appointment as the colour takes better.

abitoflight · 19/12/2017 15:14

My hairdresser says same as Tinks

Jaxhog · 19/12/2017 15:14

Yikes! I'd be in serious dry shampoo territory after 4 days. But then I have fine short hair.

Seriously though, if your hairdresser doesn't want to work on unwashed hair, they'll wash it. If you aren't sure - ask.

kateandme · 19/12/2017 15:16

not saying its right or nice but also hairdressers have to come across all sorts of hair and types and people in various states of unwash sometimes.not often.but sometimes.

HermionesRightHook · 19/12/2017 15:19

I always go on a non-washing day otherwise I get treated to the "you shouldn't wash your hair so much" lecture.

My hairdresser point blank won't believe that my hair gets so greasy so fast that every other day is the best I can do.

I love the man, he does wonderful things, but he has a blind spot about this!

magicstar1 · 19/12/2017 15:20

My hairdresser told me not to wash my hair before getting the colour. It's takes well, and apparently helps to protect your scalp.

I did apologise one day when getting a wash & blow dry because I hadn't washed it for a good few days, and the girl said that was mad...that's what she was there for so no point in washing it twice.

TsunamiOfShit · 19/12/2017 15:26

A bit OT, but if you don't wash your hair every day, what do you do when you shower? Do you till wet the hair or do you put it up and just water the rest of your body?

AnachronisticCorpse · 19/12/2017 15:28

I wash mine (long, thick, bright pink) about once a week. I wear a shower cap for my daily shower.

Definitely go with it as it is.

LoniceraJaponica · 19/12/2017 15:32

Wear a shower cap of course.

I have dry hair. If I wash it more than twice a week it looks like straw.

TieGrr · 19/12/2017 15:34

I wash mine every third day and use a shower cap in between. Usually need dry shampoo by Day 3 though.

coconuttella · 19/12/2017 15:39

Filthy animals! How anyone can leave the house or go to bed without freshly cleaned hair is beyond me! Imagine the dirt you’re carrying around on you. Do you have children? Are you not worried they’ll get ill from this grime you’re infesting your house with?

FizzmasXx · 19/12/2017 15:40

Don't wash it. It will be perfectly fine it is better than having just washed hair

horatioisabrick · 19/12/2017 15:44

Mine has actually told me to do that... Feels weird but she knows what she's talking about. So that's what I do.

Olivelor · 19/12/2017 15:49

Generally, it’s best to wash your hair the day before you plan on coloring it. You shouldn't be using styling products and just let your hair do its natural thing. Then your hair should be in the perfect condition to accept color the following day.Wink
