To ask how big is your house?

I'm grateful for what we have but I feel like I'm suffocating day to day.

We have a terraced house consisting of a small kitchen and lounge downstairs, a master bedroom, box room and tiny bathroom upstairs.
There's me, OH, DS (3), newborn DS and DDog.

There's no porch or wide hallways to have extra storage.
You walk straight into the kitchen where all the post and tat gets dumped on the nearest worktop or the table, no room for coat rack so jackets get dumped on the kitchen chairs, lounge has huge toybox as there's no room to keep DSs toys in his bedroom as its so small and now I'm having to figure out how to fit 2 DCs in there. The car seat for DS2 is in the lounge also as there's nowhere else to keep it.

There's clutter everywhere you turn despite trying to keep on top of it and it's a constant cycle of trying to cut down on stuff etc.
It makes me feel really down and I struggle to clear my head, it makes the days with the kids really difficult as sometimes you have to walk over stuff or trip over a bouncer or toy to get to the other side of the room.
I'm dreaming of a nice 3 bedroom house with an open plan kitchen and diner and a nice big lounge, oh and a utility room Blush

AIBU to ask how big is your house and if you're happy with it?

This is hilarious because you can completely see who hasn't read the thread! (Or even the whole OP)

Yep keep the pointless tales of oversized houses coming....

chocolatespiders · 22/12/2017 21:57

I feel the same a you op but I try and be glad of what we have and know it could be much worse.
Tiny 2 bed house. DD's are 20 and 15. Myself and younger dd share a room (I have a small single she has a single above mine) which is not going to be practical for much longer but I know the H/A will not move us.
I work full time but would not get a mortgage in this area even though I have paid full rent for 17 years!

Dread Christmas because of the extra stuff but have tried to very much to limit it this year.

GottaBeStrong · 23/12/2017 00:20

We rent a house like yours and I feel like you. It's depressing. The problem is not just size, it's storage. Where to put pram and car seat? Where to store linen and towels?
It's things like that which make no sense to me.

We need a major declutter as I feel as if I am drowning or suffocating. I would love two double bedrooms (and a single) with a proper separate hall with stairs in it as our stairs are in the lounge/diner and all the heat goes up them instead of warming the room properly.

soup00 · 23/12/2017 09:07

@MyOtherProfile to be honest it's a stupid question to ask!

WanderingTrolley1 · 23/12/2017 09:09

Huge 1900 5-bed over 3 floors.

Tbh we have lived in our big house for five years now after moving from a cramped semi, and all my dreams of minimalist living and room for everything have crumpled to dust. We’ve just expanded all our crap to fill the space...

pinkhousesarebest · 23/12/2017 13:20

The stealth boasts just keep on coming. Can't you read people!

MyOtherProfile · 23/12/2017 13:37

@soup00 I don't think I'd be asking it if I was unhappy with my home. Comparisons are odious and all that.

AnachronisticCorpse · 23/12/2017 13:39

Er, mine wasn’t a stealth boast. I was just pointing out that a big house doesn’t equal tidy and uncluttered.

I don't think it matters how big your house is. Unless you are very careful you'll fill a 6 bed house as quickly as a 2 bed. Stuff expands to fill the space it has.
You can't tidy clutter. I'm only now learning that!

Buck3t · 23/12/2017 14:47

big now Ive put in a loft conversion extended the kitchen and have a utility, downstairs loo and separate dining and living area. the garden is now small however.

marymoosmum · 23/12/2017 14:59

2 bed flat, with small bathroom, small living room/ kitchen and 2 small bedrooms. We have 2 adults (My DH is just shy of 6ft with size 14 feet.) DD (3), DS (3 months) and a cat the size of a small dog so your doing better than us op

marymoosmum · 23/12/2017 15:01

It is a horrible situation to be in though. I cry some nights as I feel I have failed my 2DC as they don't have the space they need.

ilovesushi · 23/12/2017 15:05

4-bed. It's a bit bland/ ugly from the outside, but very comfortable functional family home.

ilovesushi · 23/12/2017 15:06

Just reading previous posts - no stealth boasting going on here. Just answering the question.

SadieContrary · 23/12/2017 15:22

Bloody massive Confused
6 bedrooms, all ensuite plus a guest loo downstairs. Sounds fabulous I'm sure but keeping on top of the cleaning is horrendous. DH feels the need to use several bathrooms Angry
We don't pay for it though. We live overseas and it's paid for by his company.
Was the type of house I always dreamed of. You know what they say... careful what you wish for!
When we move home and buy our 'forever home' it'll be much more sensible than this!

AManWalksIntoABarOuch · 23/12/2017 15:25

Marymoosmum - don't be sad. You are providing your kids with a safe and loving home. What is failing them?

TheOtherGirl · 23/12/2017 18:32

OP when DD was born we lived in a tiny 2 bed house. Very pretty but you couldn't swing a cat.

Some of my clever tricks were to store the buggy in the boot of my car + the big packs of nappies (just bringing in a dozen at a time).

I had a row of hooks on the back of the front door for coats/bags.

I got those shallow drawers from IKEA which slide under sofas.

Another tip would be to box up 50% of all their toys and store them in the attic. Then once a month rotate them. It will really cut down on the clutter and your DCs will find the 'new' toys exciting all over again.

DueNov · 23/12/2017 18:35

Well in and there's a hallway. To right a fairly large square lounge. Walk through hallway big kitchen and decent size conservatory. Upstairs is a smallish family bathroom. A single bedroom which you could fit A double in if you wanted. A double room and a large double room. Terraced house.

Just me my other half and a baby

3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, large kitchen/ dining room and big living room. It's not huge but enough for us just now :)
