To ask how big is your house?

I'm grateful for what we have but I feel like I'm suffocating day to day.

We have a terraced house consisting of a small kitchen and lounge downstairs, a master bedroom, box room and tiny bathroom upstairs.
There's me, OH, DS (3), newborn DS and DDog.

There's no porch or wide hallways to have extra storage.
You walk straight into the kitchen where all the post and tat gets dumped on the nearest worktop or the table, no room for coat rack so jackets get dumped on the kitchen chairs, lounge has huge toybox as there's no room to keep DSs toys in his bedroom as its so small and now I'm having to figure out how to fit 2 DCs in there. The car seat for DS2 is in the lounge also as there's nowhere else to keep it.

There's clutter everywhere you turn despite trying to keep on top of it and it's a constant cycle of trying to cut down on stuff etc.
It makes me feel really down and I struggle to clear my head, it makes the days with the kids really difficult as sometimes you have to walk over stuff or trip over a bouncer or toy to get to the other side of the room.
I'm dreaming of a nice 3 bedroom house with an open plan kitchen and diner and a nice big lounge, oh and a utility room Blush

AIBU to ask how big is your house and if you're happy with it?

My house is too small. Actually upstairs is fine, we have enough bedrooms and they are good sizes, but downstairs bugs me. The living room is too small, and the kitchen is too big. We spend more time in the living room so I feel it should be the other way round. Plus I’d like another room downstairs, a conservatory or playroom as DS’s toys are taking over the living room.

I am grateful for what we have though. It’s an ex council house so solidly built and we have big front and back gardens, we couldn’t afford to buy they same size house in this town if it weren’t ex council, and it’s on a nice quiet road.

I just really felt the smallness yesterday when we had family round. It was like the book, a squash and a squeeze - when they all left the place felt enourmous!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 18/12/2017 21:25

4 bed detached which we have extended a bit

I would be happy if it was a bit bigger but to be honest its big enough

MyOtherProfile · 18/12/2017 21:26

We moved from a little 3 bed Victorian terrace where we felt very cramped but totally loved the house. Now we live in a 4 bed detached house with 2 en suite, and downstairs we have a lounge, kitchen, dining room, play room and a hobbies room. Oh and a laundry room and loo. I absolutely love it because there's room for everything. There's 4 of us.

PickAChew · 18/12/2017 21:26

The 4 of us have just moved from a 800 sq ft 2 bed terrace - quite big rooms, but we were tripping over each other - into a 1250 sq ft 3 double bed semi with big kitchen diner and 2 good sized reception rooms. We're not using the bedrooms as bedrooms yet, as the roof is being replaced in the new year, but it still feels a lot more spacious (probably thanks to the 3 massive temporary storage cupboards we currently have upstairs!)

QueenofLouisiana · 18/12/2017 21:26

4 bedrooms, bathroom upstairs (no ensuite).
Downstairs: hall, living room, dining room, kitchen, loo. The kitchen is smaller than is currently fashionable, but I don’t like eating in a kitchen to be honest.
It’s a 1970s house, so not a sought after style- much more affordable than a similar Victorian or new build. Good size rooms and space to park, so very practical.

SaucyJack · 18/12/2017 21:26

2 bed flat for 5 of us, plus one cat.

It is cramped, but it's a large purpose built flat with big bedrooms and several cupboards, so it could be far worse.

I'd love another room tho. There's nowhere to sit where there isn't at least a million other people jumping on each other and/or screaming. Can't even have a bath without at least 2 people coming in for a wee.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 18/12/2017 21:27

3 bed 1930s detached with a cellar, porch and a garage. We bought this house because it has 2 large reception rooms which meant we could get away from each other and have our own space, the downside is the tiny kitchen we can't afford to extend and the fact that the cellar currently has 6 inches of standing water 😂

I still love it so much more than our last 3 bed which was open plan downstairs. How anyone lives in an open plan house forever and hasn't committed murder is beyond me. Never ever again, for the sake of my husbands life marriage.

camelfinger · 18/12/2017 21:27

Our house sounds like your dream, although it’s about 1,100 square feet, I believe, so it’s not huge. I’d ideally like 4 bedrooms and an extra reception room. We have hooks everywhere, on most doors. They are stacked with coats but at least they are out of the way-ish. I recycle most post as it comes in and I try to remove us from mailing lists. Do you have a loft space? Also, Ikea Kallax is amazing for storing toys and pretty much anything. Can the car seat go on top of a wardrobe?

BlessYourCottonSocks · 18/12/2017 21:27

I don't know whether to post or not, because I don't want to make you feel worse and it feels a bit boasty, but we have a 7 bed old farmhouse. I love it - and it has masses of character. Originally goes back to about 1690.

But...if it makes you feel better, my roof leaks in umpteen places. I have mice (and maybe worse - something in the attic sounds like a labrador with claws...) I have damp, peeling wallpaper on walls and quite a lot of mildew in odd places. Every now and then bits of ceiling fall down. My hallway has cracked tiles, and lots of my skirting boards are rotten. Every single room (and there are 18 of them altogether) needs work doing. We've lived here nearly 20 years now and we are just chasing our tails with lack of time/money. My heating bills are about £3,000 a year and it is never really warm.

I could go on. Occasionally I fantasise about getting rid of all the kids and living in a modern one bed flat somewhere.

Roomba · 18/12/2017 21:29

Two bedroom Victorian terrace for me and 2 DC - basically two original downstairs rooms (now living room and dining room/home office/laundry drying/bike storage room) with a miniscule, unheated kitchen added on to the back. Then upstairs it's two bedrooms with a tiny bathroom on the back above the kitchen.

I'm lucky though as my house has a cellar for me to store all the crap in, though it has to be well packaged so it doesn't get damp and I lost lots of stuff to flooding this year.

glow1984 · 18/12/2017 21:30

We rent a 3 bed semi with a conservatory, downstairs loo and decent sized bathroom. All the bedrooms are double rooms. There is also a loft and a big garden. At the moment it’s just DP, DS and I, but we are expecting MIL to move in next year.

Blackteadrinker77 · 18/12/2017 21:30

Big enough the rest of the year except Christmas when the families arrive.
Feels so cramped then.

There is me. DH and my DSS. 2 large bedrooms, a box room.

IHeartDodo · 18/12/2017 21:31

Biggish 2-bed terrace, but it's just me and DP at the moment and we feel like we have enough space.
He wants a german shepherd and I want 4 children so we're looking to move to a 4 bed place!

Isadora2007 · 18/12/2017 21:31

We have a four bedroom early 1900 house with conservatory, small narrow galley kitchen, dining room and three reception rooms. One was a playroom/family room for a while, is now a gym. It’s a large house and I love it.

romany4 · 18/12/2017 21:31

2 bed semi HA.
Tiny hallway, small lounge and kitchen downstairs. Upstairs tiny bathroom, 2 bedrooms classed as doubles. You can fit a double bed in each and bedside tables but that's it.
Can't complain though because it's me, DH and DS who's 20 and at Uni or out with his friends most of the time. Wouldn't be too bad if DH wasn't so bloody untidy and leaves piles of himself all over the house.

Temporaryanonymity · 18/12/2017 21:31

Three of us in a 3 bed. Living and dining room, small kitchen. Downstairs loo and garage with all of our crap. Long term plan is to get rid of all the crap and convert into a second living room. I have good attic space too.

BulletFox · 18/12/2017 21:31

Got a teeny flat at present. It's just bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, sitting room.

It's only for me and cat :)

PeapodBurgundy · 18/12/2017 21:33

Ours is the same size as yours OP (quite literally from your description). We have DS (21 months) and today found out we're expecting number 2. No way can we fit, but we can't afford a 3 bed. We're looking to move to a slightly bigger place, but with two receptions rooms. The bedroom will be just for sleeping in and clohes to be stored. Downstairs we'll have a family room (I'm thinking effectively a playroom with a TV, small sofa and a drop leaf dining table). Then a smarter sitting room in the smaller reception room. There are several like that in our area within our budget thakfully. I think having a space I can sit in once DS is in bed will help me cope a little better, as I can just pick up the thick of the toys and shut the door on the rest. (We rent rather than own, so moving isn't that big of an expense).

BG2015 · 18/12/2017 21:33

My house is a bit of a tardis.

4 bedroom town house, over 3 floors. Downstairs utility and large dining kitchen, leads onto small but adequate garden, integrated garage, , middle floor is master bed & ensuite, plus lounge, top floor is 2 large bedrooms one with ensuite and a small bedroom and main bathroom.

We love it, it’s south facing and cost £170k 2 yrs ago. Only issue is parking. There’s me, my DP and 2 teenagers. Loads of space and a great area.

FlashTheSloth · 18/12/2017 21:33

We lived in a house like yours, walked into front room, stairs in front, cut through to kitchen and 2 bedrooms and batbroom upstairs. Nice but small and 4 of us in there. We moved when DCs were 6 and 3 and now have a 3 bedroom house with big, dual aspect front room diner, kitchen that has been extended and extra shower room downstairs and study. I was excited about having a hallway tbh. I love my house and the space we had. We were in out little 2 up, 2 down for 6 years and only flats before that, most of which weren't great in one or more ways.

Biscusting · 18/12/2017 21:34

We are fortunate to have more space than we need, but we moved to a cheap area that was closer to family.

To be honest, we still have clutter, your just more inclined to shove it in a cupboard I suppose. Stuff really grates on me too, and with small children it really gets suffocating.

Do you have any opportunities on the horizon that would allow you to move OP?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 18/12/2017 21:34

Just looked on rightmove

A doer upper for 600k

And a lovely one for 900k you could just move into

Titsywoo · 18/12/2017 21:36

Ours is a great size but we have extended it a lot! Started as a 3 bed bungalow 4.5 years ago with a smallish kitchen, lounge, tiny bathroom, narrow corridor for a hall, one good sized double bedroom, a small double bedroom and a box room. We now have 3 good sized doubles, a huge kitchen diner, a large lounge, massive hallway, utility room, large bathroom and shower room for the kids. We also have a massive shed and a garage and eaves storage plus lots of cupboards built in downstairs for storage. It's been hard work and expensive but I'd say now we have the perfect amount of space - it would be more than enough if it weren't for DHs stage lighting hobby Angry.

Jonsey79 · 18/12/2017 21:37

5 bed 30s semi

ivy799 · 18/12/2017 21:38

BIG houses are over-rated. We have had a 1 bed flat, a small 2 bed semi house, a large 3 bed detached house, and then 5 bed detached on 3 floors.

The big 5 bed was an utter ball-ache to clean. I spent half my waking hours cleaning, and it really got on my tits. 7 years we had it. I always wanted a huge house, and first of all I loved the room; 5 bedrooms, a study, 2 bathrooms, an en suite, a 20 ft x 15 ft lounge/diner, a bedroom purely for the records, books, video games, CD's etc... But the novelty wore off fast!

Our 2 kids left home 2-3 years ago, just a few months apart. We now have a (fairly small) 3 bed detached bungalow. Half the size of the 5 bed house. It has a big garden though, and a lot of loft space. I love it. A big house never again!
