To ask how big is your house?

FGSholdthedoor · 18/12/2017 21:07

I'm grateful for what we have but I feel like I'm suffocating day to day.

We have a terraced house consisting of a small kitchen and lounge downstairs, a master bedroom, box room and tiny bathroom upstairs.
There's me, OH, DS (3), newborn DS and DDog.

There's no porch or wide hallways to have extra storage.
You walk straight into the kitchen where all the post and tat gets dumped on the nearest worktop or the table, no room for coat rack so jackets get dumped on the kitchen chairs, lounge has huge toybox as there's no room to keep DSs toys in his bedroom as its so small and now I'm having to figure out how to fit 2 DCs in there. The car seat for DS2 is in the lounge also as there's nowhere else to keep it.

There's clutter everywhere you turn despite trying to keep on top of it and it's a constant cycle of trying to cut down on stuff etc.
It makes me feel really down and I struggle to clear my head, it makes the days with the kids really difficult as sometimes you have to walk over stuff or trip over a bouncer or toy to get to the other side of the room.
I'm dreaming of a nice 3 bedroom house with an open plan kitchen and diner and a nice big lounge, oh and a utility room Blush

AIBU to ask how big is your house and if you're happy with it?

WE moved for school catchment

PickAChew · 21/12/2017 19:01

Tuppences, I know what you mean. We discounted 4 and 5 bed houses that we couldn't see how we'd fit the stuff from our 2 bed into. There are £350k 4 beds (this is the northeast!) just up the road from our new house with much less living space than that house had. Integral garages and loads of bathrooms don't half eat into the useful square footage of a house.

BulletFox · 21/12/2017 19:04

FGS did you manage to make a start on sorting out storage?

TheOtherGirl · 21/12/2017 19:15

5 bed, period house with large family bathroom and en suite, 2 reception rooms, big utility and large dining kitchen. Also have lots of big built in cupboards.

It's just about the right size for the four of us, though we tend to always have a houseful of teens as our DDs have big bedrooms that everyone can spread out in Hmm

We downsized to here from a mahoosive barn conversion which was actually too big. It didn't feel homely.

L0V3 · 21/12/2017 19:20

I live in a downstairs council flat with 2 bedrooms. My kids share one and me and DH share the other. It's small but we have a decent garden. Everything works. Kids are happy. We are ok. Can afford the heating etc. After Xmas is out of the way we will be looking into saving up and paying for decent storage.

Loveactuallyoctopus · 21/12/2017 19:29

4 bed mid terrace but absolutely no storage space because the loft is a bedroom and the cellar is leaky!

Hallway too narrow to store anything, only living room and kitchen down stairs, no dining room.

I can't bare clutter either, I've chucked a lot away and after Xmas will be having another clear out i imagine.

Bedrooms are ok size so space for storage but no space downstairs.

Originally this house was a two up two down no inside bathroom so things are a bit squashed in.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 21/12/2017 19:57

4 bed mid terrace town house. 4 very big bedrooms, not much living space. And zero storage. It always looks cluttered and drives me batty.

Moving to a 4 bed detached house with 3 large bedrooms and one smaller (but still decent size) a playroom/study intergrated garage and a massive kitchen/diner, a separate utility room and a decent sized lounge, only downside is the garden is smaller but I can live with that to get away from the cuntish neighbors. And it’s cheaper Hmm

2017SoFarSoGood · 21/12/2017 21:36

OP, hope you are still around. I know of what you speak. DS, DDIL & DGS1&2 live in a tiny flat. Tiny. They never complain but man, it is cramped and getting more so as DGS2 will soon need a big boy bed. One thing I have done is made sure to offer space saving items as gifts, instead of adding toys to the piles. DGS1's loft bed with dresser/bookcase/toy box and space to sit under was key. Also, IKEA stacking systems. Wall hanging shelves for coats/bags. They are not very tidy by nature, but even if they were it would be a constant struggle. I hate that I can't help them with more space.

A small 3 bed semi. Just about fits us all in but add any more people and its far too small. It's in the perfect location for work and school otherwise we'd move somewhere larger.

GoldenPants · 21/12/2017 22:11

Got 5 bedroom house, 1en-suite, family bathroom and another toilet, big lounge and kids playroom. Lots of storage. Planning on having few more kids so hopefully all rooms will be taken soon.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/12/2017 22:19

Totally agree with [bluntness and hoof]

chandlersfraud · 21/12/2017 22:26

Your situation sounds really hard OP and it would get me down too. Storage is really important. Can you either create some by eg. making a porch? Extension at the back? Loft conversion?

Or look at moving? If you're in a Victorian terrace in many areas you could get a more modern house Eg. 30s/60s/70s with a bit more space compared to a 'prettier' but smaller Victorian house.

chandlersfraud · 21/12/2017 22:29

And yes, hark at all the people who think it's super helpful to the OP to boast share about their big houses!

People just love talking/posting about themselves.

neverhadanymarblestolose · 21/12/2017 22:40

We have 2 children (6 & 2) and we have a 3 bed, with 2 bathrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen, utility room and a play room. We have a large shed for garden stuff but no garage. We do have a large loft, but we only recently partially boarded it for more storage.
I'd like a bigger living space downstairs, with more accessible storage, and I'd also like to increase the size of the smallest third bedroom, so that it's the same size as the second bedroom.
As soon as I start getting my 30 hours free childcare for my youngest next year, I'll start pricing up extension costs. And weigh up whether it's more cost effective to extend rather than move to a larger property.

I have a feeling no matter where I live, it'll never be big enough as I'll soon fill it with stuff. My dad's house is a mansion and he'd still like a bigger one.

Blankscreen · 21/12/2017 23:21

Yes well done to those boasting about their amazing houses and your plans to improve things.

Clearly the op is stuck in a tricky situation and she needs to hear how lucky some of you are with all the space you have.

MyOtherProfile · 21/12/2017 23:28

@Blankscreen did you actually read the OP?

AIBU to ask how big is your house and if you're happy with it?

Perhaps your answer to the OP is yes, YABU?

Blankscreen · 21/12/2017 23:31

Yes I did read the op but I have some tact.

TheOtherGirl · 22/12/2017 11:54

Hang on, I'm confused. The OP specifically asked us to state how big our houses are, yes? And if we were happy with the size, yes?

Should we have responded that we dislike having lots of spacious rooms and plenty of storage, then Confused

Taffeta · 22/12/2017 13:12

It’s aboit reading the entire op, not just the headline.

And then considering what sort of response is really appropriate.

GinUser · 22/12/2017 14:12

Much too big for just 1 person, sometimes I don't go into some rooms for years, literally. Too big to clean or maintain. but it is mine, no mortgage, so I am sticking with it. Also there is no property market where I live so I might not even make what I paid for it.
My aim for 2018 is to get the bathrooms and kitchen done, replace a couple of ancient windows and possibly have some other building work done, depending on cost. Longer term I would love to fit out the attic (another 43m2 of living space) as a bedroom with en suite for me. Given a lottery win I would have the place demolished and rebuilt with better configuration and 21st century technology and insulation standards.

youvegottobekidding · 22/12/2017 14:28

3 bed semi. We bought it as a 2 bed semi but split the biggest bedroom so our 2 kids (boy & girl) could have a bedroom each, but had to wait a year to do it to save up for it so we spent the first year sleeping on the floor in our sons bedroom.

Lounge is fairly big, kitchen in small size as is bathroom, small hallway. Son has smallest bedroom, us & dd have ok sized bedrooms. Absolutely crying out for space/storage, so under the bed storage boxes come in handy & those coat hook rack things are very good for hanging coats, bags, dressing gowns, onesies! We have an outbuilding, well two, small one has tumble dryer in & other one full off DH's shit.

Yes in an ideal world, we could do with a bigger house, & yes sometimes it drives me crazy that I have walk like a crab to get around my bedroom but from where we've come from to now, we're very very lucky.

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 15:24

Big enough

but I am strict about clutter
as even the largest house feels small if its cluttered
and the smallest house feels comfortable if its tidy

fannyfelcher · 22/12/2017 15:32

We went from a small 3 bed with 4 kids age 8-18 to a 5 bed with 3 kids. My new house is a ginormous 3 storey affair but despite the massive bedrooms and living room, the kitchen is ridiculously small, we have no storage at all, one toilet and no loft space either. My living room/diner is 8x4m and my kitchen is 2x2.5 m and has two doors into it so actual usable space is ridiculous for the size of the house. But we have a third floor roof garden off the ginormous master bedroom so its a trade I can live with.

squiby2004 · 22/12/2017 15:36

We have a 5 bed detached 2reveption room with 3 ensuite bedrooms, family bath, downstairs loo, utility, garage. There is H & I, 13 year old DD and 2 dogs. It’s a big house and we love it.

Frouby · 22/12/2017 15:43

It's horrible when you feel like that OP. We were the same in our old house. Slightly bigger than yours but no hallway or storage to speak of.

We are now in a decent sized HA house. 3 bedrooms. All nice sized rooms and a fab big cupboard under the stairs, nice hallway and a back hallway too.

Use your walls for storage if you can. I ha e 2 cabinet/bookcases that I can fit loads in. Under bed storage boxes are brill for dcs stuff and I have an ikea kallax knock off type thing in ds's room.

I also use the car as storage for coats. They fit in the footwell in front of the car seat. Pram always lived in the boot. Be really ruthless with toys.

A friend of mine has a box room for their ds. And has got fitted wardrobes and a fitted bed. Loads of storage but not much floor space but their ds uses the landing space to play on. Would that be an option?
