Everyone obviously thinks what they are telling you is true but sometimes their sources or opinions are not factually correct.

What is the most ridiculous or bizzare fact/opinion you have seen ?

That it is illegal to open someone elses post

Actually, it is illegal. Section 84 of Postal Services Act 2000
www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2000/26/section/84/enacted

crunchymint · 19/12/2017 09:27

Also I know it is far from universal, but I did have a free half hour of solicitors advice that was really useful.

MelaniaMacron · 19/12/2017 09:30

That everyone who needs mental health help can access it immediately from the simple visit to their GP or A&E.

That anyone can just "move house".

That all responsible parents put their children to bed at 7pm on the dot.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 19/12/2017 09:30

That the only way your DH can succeed in his career is for you to be a SAHM so he can go abroad with next to zero notice every week for big important meetings

^^ This.

Also, that the only way a SAHM could go out to work is if she found a school hours, term time, well paid role. Otherwise, it's simply not possible. If you don't work, fine. But own it. Don't make excuses

Thisnamechanger · 19/12/2017 09:32

lonicera It was! At my Dad's house we get these massive harvest spiders of which I am terrified...I was home alone when I spotted the bugger run across the kitchen and I totally froze (procuring squeegee mop but way to scary to go and squish it)...and it scuttles under the kitchen cabinet and got caught in a web, panics and twists like crazy...at which point whispy comes down and calmly wraps him up tightly in silk and WINCHES the motherfucker up into his lair. I was so proud. Next time I saw whispy he was a lot fatter 🕷️🕷️🕷️

streetlife70s · 19/12/2017 09:35

@thisnamechanger

I literally had no idea about these spiders until this thread. MN can be very educational at times. Thanks for sharing that, I’m never sweeping whispy away again I didn’t realise they were such legends!

Ontopofthesunset · 19/12/2017 09:36

It seems opening someone else's post is only illegal if you do it 'intending to act to a person's detriment and without reasonable excuse.' So it presumably is usually not illegal because mostly if you do open someone else's post you do it by mistake (you haven't checked the address on something that's been wrongly delivered and you just assume it's for you) or you do it with consent (ie I open all my husband's post unless it is obviously personal, which is very rare).

crunchymint · 19/12/2017 09:36

And yes, you can be sacked for being genuinely ill. Plenty of people are.Which is why it can be so hard keeping a job if you have a chronic illness that flares up sometimes.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/12/2017 09:37

That us UK based parents are odd because we put our young children to bed so early....you know like at 7pm sometimes.

I think I'm reading different threads to a lot of you - I haven't seen the spa day suggested for quite a while.

That everyone in the UK lives within 50 miles of an Ikea. Ha ha.

crunchymint · 19/12/2017 09:42

penggwn And causes brain damage. Ignoring the reality that brain damage has been observed only in babies left alone practically all the time such as in romanian orphanages. These babies were not cuddled, only handled the bare minimum to keep them alive, and ignored the rest of the time. But some people post that if you leave a baby to cry ever you will cause brain damage. Such nonsense.

Allergictoironing · 19/12/2017 09:44

That anyone who is overweight, it's because they are lazy over-eaters (never any form of disability or medical condition).

That anyone can just get a job, or get a better paid one, anywhere in the country.

If housing is expensive, "just" move further out to a cheaper area - ignoring the commuting cost difference.

People on benefits are only struggling because they spend all their money on "fags & booze" - don't you know that everyone on any type of benefits gets hundreds of pounds of taxpayers money every week?

Buses run every 15 minutes, and cost minimal money to get anywhere. But that shouldn't matter anyway, as everyone lives within walking distance of the local library (free access to the internet for as long as you want), shops, GP, hospital etc.

Anyone who hasn't maxed out their pension pot plus bought loads of BTL properties by the time they are 40 must be profligate lazy wasters.

Thedriftofstars · 19/12/2017 09:46

That everyone's DH is cheating. Even if you're sure he's not, check his phone, the bastard is definitely cheating. Hmm

That kids "go mental" at parties because they have eaten loads of sweets and therefore have high blood sugar.

Unless the kid has diabetes, their blood sugar levels will return to normal in around 20mins and the brain will have an even more regulated supply. More likely to be the music, other kids, possibly certain chemicals in processed foods (including sweets), presents, excitement.

streetlife70s · 19/12/2017 09:49

And wanking off to porn. Even if they say they don’t, you’re sure they don’t, they do. Because all men are lying porn addicted, strip club visiting wankers.

That the only way your DH can succeed in his career is for you to be a SAHM so he can go abroad with next to zero notice every week for big important meetings

And when they do go away, if the topic of where in the world he might be travelling to, like in a normal conversation, you are an overly attached, needy, clucking desperado. All good MNers don't care and don't even speak to their "D"Hs let alone care where they are from one week to the next.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 19/12/2017 09:52

The LTB brigade

Dh wasn't home from work on the dot of 6- LTB

Dh bought me a Christmas present I don't like-LTB

Dh spoke to another woman in the street-LTB

Dh looked at me the wrong way- LTB

Dh sent sexually explicit messages to my friend- don't be so quick to jump to conclusions op, I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation, followed by LTB Grin

If everyone indeed did LTB there would be very few posters left with a dh/dp.

Some poor sods can't do anything right!

ShotsFired · 19/12/2017 09:52

Much like doorbell-ringers, the absolute, beyond all measure, sans pareil, outright OFFENSIVENESS of getting a text message outwith the poster's individually specified permitted hours.

crunchymint · 19/12/2017 09:56

LordSugar I see a very different MN. Too many women making excuses for awful partners.
