Everyone obviously thinks what they are telling you is true but sometimes their sources or opinions are not factually correct.

What is the most ridiculous or bizzare fact/opinion you have seen ?

Osteopaths and chiropracters are quacks. If they could do what they claim, it would have solid evidence behind it by now. But they can't, so it doesn't.

Huh?

From the NHS website...

Most research into techniques used in osteopathy tends to focus on general "manual therapy" techniques, such as spinal manipulation. Manual therapy techniques are used by physiotherapists and chiropractors, as well as osteopaths.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on managing lower back pain and sciatica state that manual therapy can be considered as a treatment option alongside exercise.

The not bleeding in the pool thing is because of a lack of understanding of gravity and female anatomy. Swimming is done horizontally. Most people have to get vertical to get out of the pool. The blood does not come out of the bellybutton, does it?

Nothing to do with water pressure.

toriatoriatoria · 19/12/2017 22:18

That you "can just work from home" at any time. My job is one you def can't do from home!

KenForPM · 19/12/2017 22:24

Just thought of one. So many posters on MN seem to be adamantly against buying their DD any kind of pink/sparkly item at all, be it clothing, toy, whatever. If you do buy even one such item, you are immediately massively reducing their career ambitions and they will never possibly want to be a scientist/do maths or computer science/etc. I thought feminism was about choice for God’s sake. I’m not saying girls should ONLY like pink or sparkles but completely banning them is stupid IMO.

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2017 22:49

Just to add to KenForPM's post...

If your sons are wearing or playing with pink/sparkly items, you're the best parent ever Xmas Grin

Bonus points if your son wears his dress to school...

KenForPM · 19/12/2017 22:50

Oh yes. Boys are allowed access to pink and sparkles, girls are not.

TreaterAnita · 19/12/2017 22:59

That it’s entirely reasonable to prevent the paternal grandparents from seeing your newborn child for weeks because you don’t feel comfortable having ‘strangers’ around at that ‘special time’ (while your own mum’s sleeping in the spare room).

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 19/12/2017 23:01

Chimera246 Huh what? Spinal manipulation has zero evidence behind it. E.g. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21952385

As has already been pointed out, the NHS also 'considers' homeopathy as a treatment. It's not proof of any evidence for homeopathy, chiropractic, or osteopathy, because there isn't any good evidence.

wannabestressfree · 19/12/2017 23:11

My all time 'got up my nose' was when as part of a long running thread I posted that my so (aged 15) had been diagnosed unusually with schizophrenia. I admitted it was very unusual and was on the Back of years of being sectioned In a very rare forensic unit 300 miles from our house- after escaping another and making the papers

'I work with these children and he didn't'
Was the response..... it didn't matter what I said or Id proved. 'He is too young' is another. I know there are fantasists on here but I had been on here yonks with a huge backstory.

Anyway the point being it annoys when people pop along to give the unwarranted advice of ' no they didn't' as if it adds something ;/

ferntwist · 19/12/2017 23:24

DH worked in forensics for years and faeces does contain DNA because a lot is dead cells from the person who passes it, including intestinal lining. The bacteria makes it unlikely to get a good genetic fingerprint but it’s not impossible. He says he was often given such samples by the police.

ferntwist · 19/12/2017 23:24

DH also says burglars regularly left faeces at the scene.

GrooovyLass · 19/12/2017 23:25

Well this hasn't happened to me, so I refuse to believe it happens to anyone... 😠

ferntwist · 19/12/2017 23:26

Also DH was often asked to analyse faeces to try to get DNA of people who had run away from hotel rooms without paying or after trashing the place. In those instances it was usually on pants.

ferntwist · 19/12/2017 23:28

I have no reason to make this up groovy, I was surprised when DH told me! He worked in forensics for eight years.

Graphista · 19/12/2017 23:42

"That anyone can just get a job, or get a better paid one, anywhere in the country." Just what I was going to say! No there really aren't loads of jobs for which everyone has the required experience/qualifications or can easily get them AND easily affordable/available childcare or care for sick/disabled family members too 🙄

"People on benefits are only struggling because they spend all their money on "fags & booze" - don't you know that everyone on any type of benefits gets hundreds of pounds of taxpayers money every week?" This too! Utter nonsense. Also that benefits are easy to get, even if you're not genuinely entitled, the very opposite is true! Many many people are really struggling to find money for BASICS (rent food hearing) due to the UC farce! If benefits were so generous and easy to get hardly anyone would work!

"Well if you can't afford your DC you shouldn't have had them!" Cos people's circumstances NEVER change unexpectedly Hmm plus really very few people can "afford" kids so should only the independently wealthy procreate?!

And yes the assumption that English law applies to the whole of the U.K. Pisses me off. Especially when even AFTER I've said we live in Scotland people post links to ENGLISH laws

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2017 23:49

That everyone can just learn to drive.

Never mind the fact it's well accepted that not everyone is good at everything.

Everyone should be able to drive, no matter how many lives that may put at risk.

CrestedTit · 19/12/2017 23:53

That jobs (at least those done by anyone's DH) are sociable and non stressful and involve many coffee breaks and a "lunch hour".

Working away (especially if staying in a hotel) is basically a holiday.

GrooovyLass · 20/12/2017 00:00

fern I wasn't doubting you - I was saying it's ridiculous when people deny that something is a possibility because it's never happened to them!

BlueUggs · 20/12/2017 00:08

That going to bed without pants on means you are spreading faecal matter all over your sheets
and are going to die

KenForPM · 20/12/2017 00:30

Ugh I never go to bed with pants on, my nether regions feel all gross the next day!! I only wear them on my period when I have a pad on. I don’t wear socks to bed either for the same reason. A friend I have does both and I find it bizarre.

Tessliketrees · 20/12/2017 00:32

"Leave it to social services to sort out". Pops up on every thread about an older relative who doesn't want to engage with services. As if people turn 65 and suddenly social workers have a right to dictate how they live.

In fairness this isn't just on MN but also irl.

Also any magic phrase. "Say the words 'vulnerable adult' a lot". Mostly they are out of date phrases anyway. FYI when you repeat phrases like that all it says to the person dealing with the call is that you have Googled poor advice.

Thermowoman · 20/12/2017 00:52

That Australia is a shit hole and that everyone who lives there is a massive racist.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/12/2017 00:56

That Australia is a shit hole and that everyone who lives there is a massive racist

I've never seen this to be honest! Australia is bloody marvellous :}

I blame The Slap pile of shite that it is.

Greensleeves · 20/12/2017 01:11

That holding little babies too much makes them whiny, clingy and soft

Neiflette · 20/12/2017 01:34

Special

Water pressure actually does play a part in it, as well as gravity. The pull of the gravity is not enough to pull your flow down and out while in the water due to the water pressure. So... While you don't stop having a period, you probably won't bleed until you get out of the water. Swimming horizontally just maximises the effect. You aren't likely to bleed sitting vertically in a bath full of water.
