I can't recall how we got onto this topic but a man at work seems to think that two slices of bread with a filling and cut in half is TWO sandwiches.Hmm

Whereas I think two slices of bread with filling is ONE sandwich cut in half...

What day you ? Smile

What if it's cut in quarters?

Hmm
SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/12/2017 17:51

If you split a chocolate bar in half it's still only one chocolate bar

No it isn't! It is an ABOMINATION!!!!! Angry

StripySocksAndDocs · 19/12/2017 17:53

I've already explained the physiological concern for those that think one sandwich is really two sandwiches TieGrr. Do I need to type it out again?

It's such a shame; in one so young too.

TieGrr · 19/12/2017 22:00

Just asked DP. He says one sandwich. Am devastated. You think you know someone.

Angie169 · 19/12/2017 22:14

what happens if its a barmcake cut in half, if you cut it in half horizontaly and put the filling in then cut it verticaly its 4 pieces of bread but one sandwich

UrsulaPandress · 19/12/2017 22:24

That is still one sandwich.

If you buy a cheese toastie you expect two slices of bread, cut in half. You don't order toasties. Do you?

ILookedintheWater · 20/12/2017 08:49

A sandwich is a thing, not a measure.
A sandwich is filling between bread. it may be big, it may be small, It may be crusty, or soft, or cut with a cutter into a dinosaur shape. Still a sandwich.
A round of sandwiches is a measure of sandwiches and specifies 2 slices of bread with a filling. The number of sandwiches in the round is immaterial. Thus you could cut into 2 or 4 sandwiches but still have one round.
Thus 2 slices of bread with a filling is a sandwich and a round of sandwiches. Cut into 2 pieces it becomes 2 sandwiches but is still a round of sandwiches. The 'round' is the measure, not the number of pieces.

Fantastic 👏. Do you work for the sanwich board?

TheGoldenBowl · 20/12/2017 09:08

ILooked

Exactly!! Another voice of reason (to add to my own).

I'd like to know how those one-sandwich die-hards account for the phrase 'round of sandwiches (PLURAL). Surely they think it should be round of sandwich ??

womaninatightspot · 22/12/2017 21:40

I have no idea cardibach but I stayed at a posh hotel once where they served a "round of sandwiches" which was 1.5. I remember the waitresses incredulity at my not knowing what a round of sandwiches was and it stuck with me. It was on the west coast of Scotland (Turnberry) maybe it was a local thing.

GranolaLover · 23/12/2017 19:12

When you buy a packet of sandwiches from a shop,it's 2 slices of bread. Always. I've NEVER bought a pre-packed sandwich that has only one slice of bread. HTH.

GranolaLover · 23/12/2017 19:16

I remember some years ago a friend of mine making me lunch. She asked me how many sandwiches I wanted. I said 2 please (meaning 4 slices of bread). She gave me one sandwich,2 slices of bread and when I (politely) queried it,she was adamant that she'd given me 2 sandwiches! And so the debate continues.....
