I can't recall how we got onto this topic but a man at work seems to think that two slices of bread with a filling and cut in half is TWO sandwiches.Hmm

Whereas I think two slices of bread with filling is ONE sandwich cut in half...

What day you ? Smile

Ok but he must still have had amazing knife skills to cut the sandwiches into 5000 pieces.

BrokenHollandaise · 18/12/2017 23:19

It's one sandwich.

Or as I call it a piece.

StripySocksAndDocs · 18/12/2017 23:23

Sardine sandwiches. Bet you're right most people would want a two slicer of sardines.

Dh has educated me (knows his bible stories it turns out. Apparently it was just 5,000 people not 49,864. Which is good - that means they'd have had 10 times more approximately.

Though he can't tell me how many loaves and fishes. or if it was tinned sardines and mother's pride

ColonelJackONeil · 18/12/2017 23:27

It's 5 loaves and 2 fishes . So if he got 10 sandwiches per loaf he would only have had to cut each sandwich into 100 sandwiches therefore I think it's just about doable.

steff13 · 18/12/2017 23:28

Does this work for other things, it is it sandwich exclusive? If I have a cookie and I cut it in half, do I now have two cookies?

ColonelJackONeil · 18/12/2017 23:31

So if I cut my cake into 2 cakes I can have my cake and eat It!

liz70 · 18/12/2017 23:34

But surely sandwiches are so late 20th century? I mean, does anyone honestly eat sliced bread any more? I don't know anyone under 105 who does. It's open topped granary seeded rye flour sour dough tranchers for me, or nothing.

StripySocksAndDocs · 18/12/2017 23:35

Right. Impressive knife skill certainly.

Another thing I discovered. Always though he fed everyone up a mountain after a sermon. Turns out that was a different time - the sermon AND it (again the sermon) wasn't a mountain but a hill. It's unclear what was eaten up this not-a-mountain hill nor where the 5,000 ate their sandwiches.

But still I feel wiser. Though I'm questioning why just two fish. Usually get more than two sardines per tin

ElChan03 · 18/12/2017 23:35

My DP is the exact same. Two sandwiches cut in half I.e. 4 slices of bread are 4 sandwiches to him. I get so confused when we make lunches because if I ask for 2 I get one and when he asks me for 4 I give him what he calls 8. Give me strength I agreed to marry this man. It's 2 bits of bread to one sandwich !!!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 18/12/2017 23:35

Wait there's a British sandwich association?

Happy Christmas. Wink

DP just said it's 2 sandwiches.

Might have to LTB

NotBadConsidering · 19/12/2017 00:39

It's a round of Geralds.

Steakandchips3 · 19/12/2017 00:55

It's one sandwich!

RestingGrinchFace · 19/12/2017 01:01

What? No. That's one sandwich.

Janetjanetjanet · 19/12/2017 01:05

My DH and I had the exact same discussion and he promptly emailed the British Sandwich Association (yes it does exist) who confirmed that 2 slices of bread made into a sandwich and then cut in half is ONE sandwich

^
What the actual duck? They confirmed this?

You're welcome

I see a serious and unpleasant court case a head of us:

TrojansAreSmegheads v British Sandwich Association

Hopefully for their sake it'll be after their annual award ceremony, the Sammies.

WarningSign · 19/12/2017 05:21

2 slices of bread with filling is 1 sandwich.

1 sandwich cut into 4 triangles becomes 4 "point sandwiches".

1 sandwich cut into 3 rectangles becomes "ribbon sandwiches".

3 slices of bread/toast with filling in the layers is a "club sandwich".

  • At least it was when I worked in hospitality!
Ethylred · 19/12/2017 06:11

The Sandwich Islands are now called Hawaii so clearly we Hawaiians are the contemporary experts.

And we don't know.

I fear OP works with my dad, this is his favourite argument to have with people. I’m with you though OP

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 19/12/2017 08:05

Now I have been thinking about this.
It rather depends on the circumstances of sandwich acquisition.

If I am at home and making a sandwich then 2 slices of bread is one sandwich.
If I am getting a pre made sandwich from a supermarket then one packet, which is generally two slices is one sandwich.

However, if I were at an event which had a sandwich buffet, where the sandwichs are generally two slices cut into 4 then I would consider each piece to be one sandwich. If I asked someone to get me two cheese sandwich for example I wouldn’t expect them to return with 8 quarters.

Everything I know is a lie!!

Snausage · 19/12/2017 09:23

Cutting a sandwich in half does not make it two sandwiches. Even if you were to make a triple-decker Shock and cut it in half, it would still be one sandwich, cut in half. If I bake a cake and cut it in half and give half away, I have half a cake.

It's my birthday this week and we're having fish finger sandwiches for dinner. I may be somewhat overinvested in sandwiches.
