Just asked OH what his favourite chocolate bar of all time is. His answer: Fry’s Turkish Delight.
I’m not sure I can date someone who ranks that higher than the likes of Dairy Milk, Boost or Galaxy!

I sympathise. I once went off a boyfriend when I saw him buying a Topic :(

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/12/2017 09:18

The orange version is to die for but you can’t find them in many places

I'd forgotten about these, Papergirl! So - they are still available in select confectionaries, are they?

MarklahMarklah · 19/12/2017 09:21

Turkish delight on it's own is lovely.
Turkish delight covered in chocolate is horrible.
Cadburys chocolate is horribler.

Bringbeboback · 19/12/2017 09:26

@tidy I can’t understand the logic behind going into a shop full of chocolate bars and choosing a Topic. Just why!

Bringbeboback my thought EXACTLY

Papergirl1968 · 19/12/2017 18:25

I’ve found the orange ones in Wilkinson occasionally, schadenfreude but sadly not the last few times I’ve been in. And I think I’ve spotted them in the Spar or the odd garage forecourt shop over the years.
The mint ones are more common but not so keen on those.
If I remember right, Fry’s used to do a version where every piece was a different flavour.

YeahRightOk · 19/12/2017 18:34

urgh. they are rotten.

YeahRightOk · 19/12/2017 18:35

and guylian sea shells look like snail shells covered in bird shit.

SilverySurfer · 19/12/2017 20:53

I got terribly excited when I read Dotdotdot's post that Flakes are made in the old factory to the old recipe but just checked ingredients:

Milk, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea), Emulsifier (E442), Flavourings, Milk Solids 14% minimum, Cocoa Solids 25% minimum, Contains Vegetable Fats in addition to Cocoa Butter

and it contains Palm Sad

Yuk to sea shells because they are cloying and stick to the roof of your mouth but at least they don't contain palm oil. Nor does Lindt and it's quite nice but nothing can replace a bar of the original Cadburys. Nothing I've tried comes close to it.

Bringbeboback · 19/12/2017 21:04

I like the Lindt Lindor balls, especially the chocolate orange flavour Grin

If I remember right, Fry’s used to do a version where every piece was a different flavour.

That was the Five Centres papergirl - orange, lime, blackcurrant, pineapple and strawberry IIRC.

They were lovely! But thanks for the tip about Wilkinson's and Spar.

Mammyloveswine · 19/12/2017 21:46

I'm partial to a dark chocolate bounty... mmmm! I do love Turkish delight too and coffee creams... I get the leftovers of chocs in the staff room mwah ah ah

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 19/12/2017 21:49

I don't trust anybody who rates Dairy Milk as good chocolate sniffs haughtily

PerditaNitt · 19/12/2017 21:57

I sometimes buy a fry’s Turkish delight bar each for DH and myself when we really need cheering up. If we had it too often we would probably hate it, but the scarcity makes it exciting.

I love proper Turkish delight. The best is the double pistachio one (pistachio flavour with pistachio nuts in) that my local Turkish supermarket sells in the tiniest Hmm boxes. Highly recommend if you can find it.

caffelatte100 · 19/12/2017 22:04

All that you mention are, in my opinion, not good chocolates. Even the shells taste bad.
However, the Lindt ball (in any flavour) are a cut above!

dotdotdotmustdash · 20/12/2017 18:24

Flake
Milk, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea), Emulsifier (E442), Flavourings, Milk Solids 14% minimum, Cocoa Solids 25% minimum, Contains Vegetable Fats in addition to Cocoa Butter

Dairy Milk
MILK**, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, vegetable fats (palm, shea), emulsifiers (E442, E476), flavourings.
**The equivalent of 426ml of fresh liquid milk in every 227g of milk chocolate MILK SOLIDS 20% MINIMUM, ACTUAL 23%. COCOA SOLIDS 20% MINIMUM. CONTAINS VEGETABLE FATS IN ADDITION TO COCOA BUTTER.

Sadly, you're right about the palm oil in Flakes, but there are differences in the recips, especially in the milk solids and the cocoa solids. Flake chocolate is different in consistency though, and definitely less greasy - I suppose it's difficult to be crumbly and greasy at the same time.

Bringbeboback · 21/12/2017 12:57

I had some Hotel Chocolat Christmas chocs yesterday and they were immense. Finally chocolate that OH and I can agree on

SilverySurfer · 21/12/2017 13:38

Ok Dotdotdot I'll buy a flake next time I'm out - will report back. If it tastes as good as Cadbury's used to, I will be forever in your debt and will buy in bulk before the swines change them Smile
