Someone has just called my home for my mother who is out. Waking up my dd.

I think it is way too late. I know its a Saturday but really!AIBU?

I find land lines intrusive at the best of times.
Grrrr! Not happy.

"I am less than middle age and I have a landline, and so do many people I know. Saying how 'twee' it is, is not only rude, it's stupid too. Because many people have one.

It's like people who mock people for not having a smart phone, or not being able drive, or mocking someone who doesn't drink alcohol. Just because they don't do it, they feel the need to mock. Rude."

Hear hear

I have a landline for internet but don't own a home phone.

specialsubject · 17/12/2017 19:19

Might be an idea to buy a £10 corded phone. Get a power cut and it still works. Your power hungry mobile won't.

specialsubject · 17/12/2017 19:21

Also with virgin you still have a physical connection, fibre not copper. So I'm afraid, uncool as it is, you still have a wire.

Fruitboxjury · 17/12/2017 19:32

I hate anyone phoning the landline, it feels like a massive intrusion because it takes me back to the fairly recent days of having young DC who woke at EVERYTHING and never went back to sleep, after 2y+ of DC2 waking thought the night. I was BROKEN. Sleep was SO precious, every second of silence I could get when they were asleep was priceless to me, I couldn’t bear it being broken by the sound of the landline ringing.

As such, if it ever rings I glare at it and genuinely start twitching, EVERYONE in my life knew not to ring the landline, everyone.

I feel with my mobile that I can justifiably screen my calls, have my phone on silent, and then —text— ring people back —because I actually just don’t want to talk— at a time that’s more convenient rather than fobbing them off with an excuse or worse still letting the landline ring endlessly!

I’m quite certain I wasn’t very well, I appreciate this isn’t a normal response.

To answer the original question though, 6pm is latest I think acceptable if someone has young DC because beyond then they are trying to get them to sleep

Clearly 10 pm is the limit. That's when the news starts and the bedtime wind down begins. Or at least here it is Smile

derxa · 18/12/2017 09:07

My landline is one of my business numbers. I wouldn't be without it.

BulletFox · 18/12/2017 09:12

I had 3 phonecalls at 7am this morning Angry so don't feel as tolerant of flexible phone times as I did upthread.

But you just learn people's circs and what suits them with regards to phone times. Evidentally I need to train people I don't like 7am.

GrinSee I always think of 10:30 as the bedtime wind down - because that's when Newsnight starts and I think of that as the adult equivalent to CBeebies bedtime

blueamberuk · 18/12/2017 14:29

We dare not ring MIL till 10pm or we get a lecture about interrupting some TV programme or another. Its so individual :)

MsHarry · 18/12/2017 15:24

I thought not after 9pm was accepted etiquette. 10 is bedtime!

MsHarry · 18/12/2017 15:27

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7377609/Young-people-no-longer-believe-it-is-rude-to-call-people-late-in-evening.html

A generational thing perhaps. I would text first if calling after 9 was warranted.

danTDM · 18/12/2017 15:27

I dared to voice this opinion MsHarry and it was not well received Hmm

danTDM · 18/12/2017 15:28

I'm 46?
Old I suppose Grin

MsHarry · 18/12/2017 15:37

I'm 46 too! Wink

Trinity66 · 18/12/2017 15:43

Depends on who I was calling really, if it was people who had young kids I wouldn't. If it were a house were I knew people went to bed early i wouldn't but if it was someone where it was only adults and they weren't early bedtime people than I would

InsomniacAnonymous · 18/12/2017 16:15

glitterlips1 "Does anyone actually use a landline nowadays?"

I do. I have never had any other type of phone.

BlackberryandNettle · 18/12/2017 18:46

I reckon 9:30 would be my cut off

specialsubject · 18/12/2017 20:41

You can screen calls on landlines, there's a thing called caller I d. Been around twenty years or more, I know some on mn are out of touch.

There are also call blockers so crooks can't make it ring at all.

Basically it is like a mobile, only doesn't need power, isn't a brick to carry round, doesn't break if dropped and works properly. Marvellous invention.

daisychain01 · 18/12/2017 21:11

We screen all our calls it called call Guardian.

Bloody brilliant invention, we haven't had to deal with a single offshore marketing call for 2 years.

belgina · 19/12/2017 09:13

I would say 9. If I get a call after that I would immediately assume it’s an emergency. I have never been worried about them kids getting awoken by the phone though, the phone is not in their bedrooms after all.
Lots of people still have landlines though. 100% of people where I live have one, because we have terrible mobile reception here in rural Kent. I have no reception indoors, except for a tiny corner by a specific window in my living room.

Maggiewashere · 23/12/2017 10:40

I use a landline because I don't always feel like going out to the bottom of the garden to make a call on my mobile. Reception here is rubbish.

And I don't live rurally. My town has around 150,000 inhabitants.

BulletFox · 23/12/2017 10:47

150,000? That's quite a lot
