(Or at least the character he plays) for mansplaining to the woman at the train station how she really shouldn’t watch movies on her phone, as it will use up all her data allowance. Git!

BlazingPaddles · 15/12/2017 12:14

Mansplaining? We gender the word explaining now?

Good grief.

dingdongdigeridoo · 15/12/2017 12:20

Those adverts are the worst. I assume they're trying to emulate the old Nescafe adverts where the couple fall in love. But that was the 80s, and most people barely see TV ads anymore. Plus there's no chemistry between them, and you just want the woman to tell him to fuck off!

DemonicEruption · 15/12/2017 12:25

Lol? But don't some women do the same thing? Isnt it just called being condescending?

MaroonPencil · 15/12/2017 12:28

I really liked him in The Office but he just plays the same person in everything I watch (can't speak for The Hobbit)

I agree. I have nothing against him as a person, in fact I rather like him, but things that I thought were great about his acting I am now quite bored and annoyed with as they are wheeled out in every single character (including in The Hobbit, Thunderbolts). Perhaps not the character he plays in The Avengers, but I haven't seen enough of him in that to be sure Grin

And that ad drives me mad as well.

Grilledaubergines · 15/12/2017 12:30

It's not mansplaining!

Whilst folk are looking into his tax affairs and general arsehole carry on, look into his Ex-wife's. She's no better. Shame they split, they were two very well suited arseholes.

So bland. And he plays the same bland character in every role.

RhythmStix · 15/12/2017 12:32

At the risk of sounding very thick, what does 'mansplaning' mean? Confused

fourquenelles · 15/12/2017 12:33

I always shout at the screen when that ad is on "Put your headphones on woman, how inconsiderate!" So I never get to hear the mansplaining that follows.

RoseWhiteTips · 15/12/2017 12:34

Rosewhitetips but even with a very good accent, he was still giving us Martin Freeman with an American Accent.
Its like a duvet set with the same pattern but a different colour combination. I admired his turn in Fargo and he did a good job with a great script whilst not really letting go of Martin Freeman.
Just an opinion which, like bum holes, everyone has.

RoseWhiteTips · 15/12/2017 12:34

Sorry!!

LizzieSiddal · 15/12/2017 12:34

I hate those ads. He looks like a creepy old man in them.

MentholBreeze · 15/12/2017 12:35

Compare to someone like (off the top of my head) Hugh Laurie who can play the prince in Blackadder, House and that evil bloke in The Night Manager.

Exactly - how can the same man play House and Bertie Wooster - and pull them both off so well. Hugh Laurie is a talented man.

Martin Freeman... well, he's not even got Martin Clunes levels of characterisation, and that's not saying much.

Fair point. Think it’s all down to his adorable wee face, tbh.

RoseWhiteTips · 15/12/2017 12:36

High Laurie as House? Swoon....

Wotrewelookinat · 15/12/2017 12:37

Exactly fourquenelles who would watch a film on their phone without head/earphones??? That’s the most irritating thing about that advert (although the whole advert is realllllly annoying).

strugglingtodomybest · 15/12/2017 12:37

And I also hate that stupid ad for a car (cannot remember which car!) that says 'time to grow up, start a family!' So patronising and condescending. Fuck off!

Oh god, me too. I haven't hated an ad this much since... the GTech ones. So not that long ago. I get very wound up by ads.

But this car one. Fuck off you fucking irritating twats is what I want to shout at the TV, but I can't, because I have children, and unlike the life portrayed in that ad, I can't do exactly what I want, when I want anymore, because I have children!!!

Apologies for the !!! but that's just how strongly I feel.I'm going to have to go and lie down now.

ThunderboltsLightning · 15/12/2017 12:37

@RoseWhiteTips i know! Grin

What I don't understand is why he is doing a Vodafone advert? I thought people normally did ads like that when they were a bit skint and he clearly isn't.

RavingRoo · 15/12/2017 12:41

There is a new crop of proper British actors emerging from TV now - eg Tom Ellis, Thomas Brodie Sangster, that will eventually replace him and other actors (like Tom Hiddleston) who are effectively just playing themselves in many different roles.

Trampire · 15/12/2017 12:41

Surely the point is (any Martin Freeman hatred from pp's aside) is that he's doing the opposite of any mansplaining. He's warning her about date usage and she tells him she's got a good deal and is more clued up than him.

Advert - tick.

MentholBreeze · 15/12/2017 12:43

Tom Ellis

I mean, I have a huge soft spot for him from Miranda, Lucifer is great, but I'm not certain that so far he's shown enormous range...

BlazingPaddles · 15/12/2017 12:43

That’s why Hollywood stars make so many ads for Japanese TV. Loadsa dosh for not a lot of work.

BlazingPaddles · 15/12/2017 12:44

Tom Ellis is a cad so I'm against him on principle. Cheating on your wife and then pleading poverty as to why you can't pay child maintenance. Ick.

dudsville · 15/12/2017 12:46

I always very confused between Martin and Morgan Freeman.
