AIBU to be annoyed that no one uses "Merry Christmas" anymore? Its very OTT!

OP posts:
Justanotherlurker · 13/12/2017 22:54

I have no fucking idea what the came after the meme and since you have now spent 7 tedious posts passive aggressively not telling me, I am out of here.

As a "teacher" at uni, your reading comprehension is sub par, even to my dyslexic self.

As I pointed out earlier....

The "muslamic ray guns" was some uneducated racist, but what he actually said was "rape gangs", the argument then devolves into stopped clock being right twice a day scenario, its even been picked up in the Guardian when you do some background reading.

The fact that you are still using the meme unironically and thinking you have somehow caught me out to be some secret racist, is not a slight on me, but on your apparent appeal to authority of being a university "teacher"

TheHolidayArmadillo · 13/12/2017 22:59

This thread has taken a funny turn 🤔

elQuintoConyo · 13/12/2017 23:06

Where do you stand on Tinseltastic Christmas in a card?

paxillin · 13/12/2017 23:07

thinking you have somehow caught me out to be some secret racist

I assure you I was completely unaware of your existence on this thread until you randomly started attacking me. I wasn't addressing you at all, I was addressing OP.

Your weird tantrum about something you still haven't explained to me is puzzling.

RosaRosaRose · 13/12/2017 23:15

Hasn't it holiday ! As a 50's and 60's child we wished a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Now I just say Happy Christmas. I suppose because the word merry is less in use these days. Nothing to do with drink, I think.

Gowgirl · 13/12/2017 23:24

A bit nippy on here tonight pax?

paxillin · 13/12/2017 23:27

Indeed. Curiouser and curiouser.

Gowgirl · 13/12/2017 23:30

Just one more twist in the wonderous tinternet rabbit hole...
May have to go google that death star saying....

paxillin · 13/12/2017 23:35

I won't google. It could have been cleared up several pages ago if only the all knowing had spoken Grin.

BoomBoomsCousin · 14/12/2017 01:10

"Its happy Christmas now because 'merry' implies people drinking "

So you are annoyed that language has evolved and people have adjusted the words they use so as to keep closer to the original meaning because the original words now have other associations too? That seems very bah-humbug and like someone who's just pissed off that things don't stay the same forever. Which we probably all feel sometimes, but it's not in any sense reasonable.

paxillin · 14/12/2017 01:17

Most people are sloshed at Christmas.

MuthaFish · 14/12/2017 01:32

I live in America. There’s “Merry Christmas” everywhere but people do often say “Happy Holidays” because of Hanukkah and Christmas falling roughly at the same time. Bog all to do with not offending Muslims. Most people over here celebrate Christmas in some way regardless of religion and haven’t heard of anyone being offended by being wished a “Merry Christmas”, other than in idiots’ imaginations

squoosh · 14/12/2017 01:35

Personally I say 'Happy Christmas'.....and yet I like to get quite merry on Christmas Day.

Oh, it's all so confusing isn't it OP?

squoosh · 14/12/2017 01:37

(Happy Christmas is standard in Ireland, whereas Merry Christmas sounds like you're trying to sound a bit fancy)

Katedotness1963 · 14/12/2017 02:41

I've always said happy Christmas and never used merry to mean drunkeness.

AstridWhite · 14/12/2017 06:42

Actually if you watch TV and look at Christmas cards they very rarely if ever say 'merry'. Its happy Christmas now because 'merry' implies people drinking which is offensive apparently hmm

Apparently? Confused

Apparently according to whom? Hmm

Could you point us towards where you have read/seen/heard this OP because it sounds like utter nonsense to me.

Are you sure this didn't happen in a dream?

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 14/12/2017 07:14

I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS! Xmas Grin

curryforbreakfast · 14/12/2017 12:23

ctually if you watch TV and look at Christmas cards they very rarely if ever say 'merry'. Its happy Christmas now because 'merry' implies people drinking which is offensive apparently

Who says it is?

Why do people persist with this bullshit?

Trinity66 · 14/12/2017 12:25

Literally everyone I know uses Merry Christmas

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2017 12:27

Off you pop back to the Daily Mail comments section

🤣

If Merry implies boozey, then I shall wish everyone a merry Xmas, only way to get through it,,,,

restbiterepeat · 14/12/2017 12:32

Merry Christmas is standard. You can't go wasting happy on Christmas, you need to reserve it for the New Year.

MissionItsPossible · 18/12/2017 11:31

I'm bumping this because I've been keeping a look out since originally posting on this thread and I have to say, the OP may be on to something, regarding Happy Christmas being used on TV. Since I've taken notice, every single instance of wishing someone a nice Christmas, "Happy Christmas" has been used. Never heard Merry. Weird. Everyone i know in RL says Merry though.
