AIBU to be annoyed that no one uses "Merry Christmas" anymore? Its very OTT!

Oh for fucks sake - plenty of Americans say Merry Christmas! I'm not religious and am an American from the 'left coast' and I say it.

Emerald92 · 13/12/2017 19:23

Actually if you watch TV and look at Christmas cards they very rarely if ever say 'merry'. Its happy Christmas now because 'merry' implies people drinking which is offensive apparently Hmm

Does it really matter exactly what is said, though?

I never ever want to not be able to say 'Merry Christmas'.

Have I got good news for you then!

implantsandaDyson · 13/12/2017 19:24

I’m writing my Christmas cards now - they say Merry Christmas on them.

RestingGrinchFace · 13/12/2017 19:25

Happy Christmas is traditional in many parts of the country. Other people say merry. I have never heard anything else. Have you just moved to a new area by any chance?

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 13/12/2017 19:25

Wait for it - any minute now Winterval will make an appearance... Xmas Hmm

Bubblebubblepop · 13/12/2017 19:25

Merrry is offensive to whom? Queen Liz?

PantPlot · 13/12/2017 19:26

What a pile of shite.

Who told you that?

Amanduh · 13/12/2017 19:28

Everyone I've spoken to at groups and classes and in shops this week have said merry christmas.. a few have said happy christmas... all my cards say merry christmas in... what are you on about?!

Snowman41 · 13/12/2017 19:30

I must have missed the memo. Why has everyone been told not to say Merry Christmas? And who by?

PantPlot · 13/12/2017 19:30

Is this one of those made up Facebook things?

Like when people say they are proud to post a pic of a poppy, or a bacon sandwich, forgetting that no fucker was offended by them in the first place.

Ecureuil · 13/12/2017 19:30

Just checked my cards (bought this year). Yep, they say merry Christmas.

Cantuccit · 13/12/2017 19:32

Same old tired bullshit lies. We had this thread a couple days ago.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/12/2017 19:35

Donald? Is that you?

CaptainHammer · 13/12/2017 19:38

All of the Christmas cards I’ve received so far say Merry Christmas. Actually one says Happy Merry Jolly Christmas Shock

ChristmasAddict · 13/12/2017 19:41

I say Happy Christmas as my grandmother disapproves of Merry Christmas due to the connection to drunkenness and the fact that Christmas should be about celebrating the birth of Christ. I happily get merry at Christmas but saying Happy Christmas has stuck :)

hazeyjane · 13/12/2017 19:42

Gosh yes, you are so right, now I think about it, when we did our preschool nativity, at the end the children all sang, 'we wish you an unthreateningly content Christmas, and a favourable New Year '

I didn't think it had quite the same ring to it. Bloody PC gobshites eh.

sonjadog · 13/12/2017 19:42

Who told you that about "Merry"? Because whoever it was, they were talking a load of shite.

nooka · 13/12/2017 19:53

I grew up saying/ writing Happy Christmas, and am not so keen on Merry Christmas, I always assumed it was a bit of an Americanism because songs like Marry Christmas' and 'Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas', which is a bit silly because I happily sang We wish you a Merry Christmas too. I wonder if it's a class/ region thing in the UK like so many variations are.

Not sure how not saying 'Mary Christmas' could be OTT

mindutopia · 13/12/2017 19:57

Well, I'm Jewish and I'd take a "Happy Hanukkah" or a "Merry Hanukkah" or even a "Happy Holidays" if people wanted to throw one my way. Even people who've known me for years and years and know I'm Jewish still wish me a "Merry Christmas" and send a Christmas card with no acknowledgement at all that I celebrate something totally different. I even get a few uber Jesus-y ones from some distant (non-Jewish) family. Hmm

Justanotherlurker · 13/12/2017 19:57

Its actually an Americanism that the term got wrangled up in being politically correct, it has been kind of spread to the UK a bit in 2011-ish but since the daily mail took to the whole "winterville" meme the extreme left have dropped it. (guilt by association and all that)

I am ex muslim, very brown, I and all my colleagues wish each other merry christmas, you're just trying to stir the pot.

Here you go, Christmas cards for sale, many of which say Merry Christmas. If Alcoholics Anonymous aren't bothered by the connotations then I think we're all right.

paxillin · 13/12/2017 20:20

'Tis those guys with the muslamic ray guns. They stole Christmas.

Why do these people start these threads and then scuttle off like cowards?
