To curl up in a corner and cry like a baby?

I put a washing on and nipped to the shop to get bread and milk and something for dinner... i had a washing on for 30mins and ive came back to a flooded floor, my cupboards and all the stuff in them are sodden, my drawers are absolutely soaking and i had batteries and my straightners in one. The kitchen sink cupboard had my toaster and slow cooker (i dont have a big spacious kitchen). The worktops got it too, for context this is how far up the water went 🙈🙈 I have phoned the emergency council number and im waiting on them. I dont know where to start with tidying as everything is so wet. Aibu to feel hopeless atm?

YANBU - that sounds horrible!

Heratnumber7 · 10/12/2017 18:34

The leak from the. Washing machine reached the worktops??? Hmm

isseywithcats · 10/12/2017 18:34

oh no i would want to cry too, start with the floor get that reasonably dry with a mop or big towels , then make yourself a cup of tea or coffee then tackle the cupboards one at a time

Yeahsureokay · 10/12/2017 18:36

Look at the cereal box more closely herat

shhhfastasleep · 10/12/2017 18:37

Water stuff is my Achilles Heel. I would probably cry too. Hope you find a way through, op.

LovingLola · 10/12/2017 18:38

So in 30 minutes your washing machine has flooded your kitchen up to a depth of 3 feet???

KarmaStar · 10/12/2017 18:38

No of course you aren't.
Anyone would be alarmed and overwhelmed.
Check your electrics are switched off if you haven't already
Take a deep breath and start mopping, have you got any neighbours, friends of family who can help?
If you can't put the kettle on,you've definitely earned a glass of wine!🌼🌼🍷

ItsNachoCheese · 10/12/2017 18:39

I don't understand how the water was as high as your kitchen worktops. Is your washing machine not at floor level?

Yeahsureokay · 10/12/2017 18:41

Really sorry op, that's awful. We've been flooded from above before (upstairs left bath running at midnight we woke up to water cascading from ceiling and down the walls in our bathroom, was like a paddling pool!) Water is awful for causing damage. Lots of towels were required! Of course then they need cleaning. Do you have anyone close by or a laundrette to help you with out with laundry in the meantime do you? Sorry, this sucks op. 💐

ItsNachoCheese · 10/12/2017 18:42

lovingluna the water had came up the sink and flooded the worktops as when i tried to drain the water away it was coming back up the sink. Thats how the cereal boxes got wet

Grimbles · 10/12/2017 18:43

Are you sure it's the washing machine?

Your cornflakes should be ok in the plastic bag inside the boxes though!

ItsNachoCheese · 10/12/2017 18:44

yeahsureokay just my sister but she has no tumble drier. I was washing my clothes as we were meant to be joining my parents on holiday tomorrow. Sadly i wont make it :(

ItsNachoCheese · 10/12/2017 18:44

Is there, gulp, a blocked drain or pipe somewhere ? You will get to the other side of this but, bloody hell, I really feel for you.

B0033 · 10/12/2017 18:47

What a nightmare. :(

SaucyJack · 10/12/2017 18:50

Have you got a sink plunger?

There's probably a blockage further down in the pipe. It's quite easy to sort once you get a knack for plunging :-)

ItsNachoCheese · 10/12/2017 18:52

Council are here pipe is frozen solid :(

OP posts:
Heratnumber7 · 10/12/2017 18:53

The washing machine wouldn't use that much water in 30 mins though, and even if it did, where is the water now?

Are you sure nothing else above worktop height is leaking OP?

PotteringAlong · 10/12/2017 18:53

Why won’t you make the holiday? Turn the water off, book plumber for when you get back. Job done.

user1468353179 · 10/12/2017 18:55

The top came off my tap when it was turned on. It was like a geyser , water went everywhere at mains pressure for about an hour before the plumber arrived! It was hitting the ceiling and flooding everywhere, I feel so sorry for you, it's awful.

thecatneuterer · 10/12/2017 19:02

userlotsofnumbers - why didn't you turn off the water at the stopcock?

Littlecaf · 10/12/2017 19:03

Call your insurance. You might need a new kitchen - the water will get in the cupboards if they are standard MDF and expand the wood - you might need to dry out your walk too and have new insulation. This happened to us - do it now and they will sort it out ASAP.

Littlecaf · 10/12/2017 19:05

*wall not walk

shhhfastasleep · 10/12/2017 19:07

Frozen? Oh goodness! Is it that cold where you are? Glad the Council is on it.
