I put a washing on and nipped to the shop to get bread and milk and something for dinner... i had a washing on for 30mins and ive came back to a flooded floor, my cupboards and all the stuff in them are sodden, my drawers are absolutely soaking and i had batteries and my straightners in one. The kitchen sink cupboard had my toaster and slow cooker (i dont have a big spacious kitchen). The worktops got it too, for context this is how far up the water went 🙈🙈 I have phoned the emergency council number and im waiting on them. I dont know where to start with tidying as everything is so wet. Aibu to feel hopeless atm?

Bit of a nightmare but why can't you go on holiday? If you need to make an insurance claim just ring them to explain what happened and that you'll be back in a few days if their loss adjuster needs to come. Take photos, bin anything ruined and get your wet clothes on the radiator asap.

Ahh Ok, I see, the drain pipe was frozen so the water had nowhere to go. OP, get towels and put them in another room, now rescue everything that can be rescued; straighteners, slow cooker, toaster and other electrical gadgets will be ok if you rescue them now, get most of the water out and leave them to dry. Get a big bin bag and dump everything that can't be rescued. That includes batteries and unwrapped food items.
Then pack the minimum that you need to go on holiday with your parents, and go on holiday Flowers

Littlecaf, we didn't know where it was. Even the plumber had a few goes at finding it. He had his sweatshirt over his head!

Lesson for everyone: learn what and where your stop-cock is.

Don't throw anything away until the insurance company has said they don't want to see it.

When I had a flood they sent someone round and took all the damaged items away to assess their value.

I switched my water off when i got in. The switch is in the kitchen sink cupboard

Insurance company will have a 24 hour claim line, contact them tell them what's happened, t lol them you are due to go on holiday tomorrow ask them what you need to keep as evidence as you can't leave a load of stuff lying around whilst you are away. If they say everything as pp said put everything in Black bags and tie up to stop damp smell. Take your clothes round to your sisters rewash and dry and do your packing, find a friend who will hold a key and let the insurance company in to view damage.
