To complain over smelly delivery? DH says so

christmastits · 09/12/2017 20:37

So I ordered DH's 30th birthday present, some Christmas decorations and a present for his sister from next.

They arrived yesterday and the bags absolutely stink of cigarette smoke. The Nike thermal top smells the worst but mainly it's just the bags they came in, the bin outside is full and they're stinking out my kitchen,

So I've complained to Next and DH said I was being stupid and it's a minor detail and the courier will get in trouble now, but I have to wash the Nike top before he opens it because it stinks Next apologised and are sending replacements but it's too late for his birthday which is on Monday.

I don't think it is acceptable at all hence the complaint, but he's grumpy that I 'made an issue' there's also the issue that we bought a tree today expecting the lights I ordered at the same time as the smelly delivery to arrive today and it's not here so we have a very bare tree!

Expensive shoe delivery, same issue! I did complain, stank my house out.

OnTheRise · 09/12/2017 21:08

I wouldn't like that either. I would complain, and would ask for fresh items to be sent. Asthmatics can't cope with things like that. It's not a minor issue.

Schlimbesserung · 09/12/2017 21:14

The problem is often the bags- the grey ones especially. Some of them stink and the smell is exactly like cigarette smoke. It isn't necessarily that the courier/postie/packer has been smoking.
I send hundreds of mail-order parcels out every week and I'd really hope that if there was this kind of problem with any of them, my customers would tell me instead of just shopping elsewhere next time.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 09/12/2017 21:27

YANBU. Happened to me this week with an item of children's clothing from M&S. I've ordered lots of times from there before so I know it's not the bags.

Got straight on the phone to customer services and they sorted out a return and reorder for me and gave me free express delivery of the reorder. And apologised. So they clearly didn't think IWBU.

Council · 09/12/2017 21:27

I was going to say it's the bags - I have a roll of black sacks that really smell of cigarette smoke.

Not sure what DH has to be sulking over though. Are you sure it's not him that made them smell?

JacquesHammer · 09/12/2017 21:29

I had the same with two Amazon orders.

Absolutely reeked of smoke. I did complain and would do so again.

YANBU OP.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 09/12/2017 21:30

YANBU! WHat if it was something for a newborn!? Stupid courier.

Bornlazy · 09/12/2017 21:37

Have you tried hanging the top over a radiator? My dad used to smoke and every present my mum gave me would smell of smoke, but after a few hours on the radiator it would vanish. Obviously you shouldn't have to do this, but if you want it for Monday it might be worth a try.

Mummaofboys · 09/12/2017 21:40

Next are awful for delivery, last month my next jeans delivery had a used sanitary towel in the back pocket along with a kitkat wrapper a tissue and some tin foil. I would complain, the customer service in next are usually fairly good.

mummyhaschangedhername · 09/12/2017 21:41

I'd complain too. I would be fuming if my new stuff smelt of cigarette smoke.

lynmilne65 · 09/12/2017 21:45

Not a minor detail is HORRIBLE

DamnItPatrice · 09/12/2017 21:47

The rolls of black bags I use also reek of cigarette smoke, it's so weird.

lynmilne65 · 09/12/2017 21:48

Mumm. WTF

BewareOfDragons · 09/12/2017 21:56

Ugh. Vile.

Your DH is nuts. Of course you should have complained.

christmastits · 09/12/2017 22:01

@Mummaofboys that is beyond repulsive! What did they say?!

It's not the courier. It's the packaging it's self if it's permeated the gifts inside. It's normally dependant on if they've used cheap plastic at the warehouse - which at this time of year they do because of the increase in orders.

Snap8TheCat · 09/12/2017 22:10

It is the courier.

I’ve had next stuff for years, literally a decade. Recently our courier changed and since then they reek! Today I also took in a Littlewoods box for my neighbour from the same courier and it also stank.

I’ve complained to next and they are raising a complaint with the courier. Excellent customer service, I’ve also had money refunded to my account.

GinDoll · 09/12/2017 22:14

Another one for its probably the bags, some packing bags do stink and it does smell like smoke. They're horrible!

Nanny0gg · 09/12/2017 22:23

Surely it's illegal to smoke in delivery vans?

Snap8TheCat · 09/12/2017 22:25

The SE ones use their cars.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 09/12/2017 22:40

Yanbu to complain. If you had bought the items in a shop they wouldn’t stink, so why should you have to put up with second rate goods because you are having them delivered.

Ellie56 · 09/12/2017 22:43

No YANBU. I did exactly the same a few years ago. NEXT were profusely apologetic, sent fresh clothes out and we never saw the smelly courier again.

Nanny0gg · 09/12/2017 22:56

The SE ones use their cars.

Still a work vehicle though.

Snap8TheCat · 10/12/2017 03:51

You can’t stop them smoking in it in their own time though. Plus the packages get delivered to their homes. Smoking smell is ingrained in everything and really lasts. They don’t need to be smoking on the job for it to affect the parcels.
