To complain over smelly delivery? DH says so

So I ordered DH's 30th birthday present, some Christmas decorations and a present for his sister from next.

They arrived yesterday and the bags absolutely stink of cigarette smoke. The Nike thermal top smells the worst but mainly it's just the bags they came in, the bin outside is full and they're stinking out my kitchen,

So I've complained to Next and DH said I was being stupid and it's a minor detail and the courier will get in trouble now, but I have to wash the Nike top before he opens it because it stinks Next apologised and are sending replacements but it's too late for his birthday which is on Monday.

I don't think it is acceptable at all hence the complaint, but he's grumpy that I 'made an issue' there's also the issue that we bought a tree today expecting the lights I ordered at the same time as the smelly delivery to arrive today and it's not here so we have a very bare tree!

I wouldn’t care about the logistics of how the smell got in there. My contract is with the shop I purchase the goods from; it’s up to them to make sure I receive them non-smelly!

I had the same issue with a duvet. It stunk of stale tobacco. There was no way I was going to sleep under that. I complained to the supplier and was refunded.

It didn't occur to me that this was remotely unreasonable.

My lovely neighbours take in my parcels for me. They smoke in the house when they give me them they stink. I tend to take the package off before I take it inside. But you shouldn't have to do that straight from the courier.

christmastits they let me choose a new pair of jeans free of charge, they apologised for the inconvenience 🤢 it was so disgusting I was repulsed.

YADNBU! Also I would be upset if my DH reacted like that. You’re not being stupid at all. Have you asked him where he’s coming from?

BeeFarseer · 10/12/2017 21:39

Your DH is the unreasonable one here!

I've complained in the past and wouldn't hesitate to complain again. The worst one for me was an Amazon Now order of a few bits of food, and baby milk. It absolutely stunk. I had the whole amount refunded but I was still left stuck in the house with an ill baby and unusable milk.

I've do heard this about plastic packaging!

Also, the plastic material underneath sofas.... the black textured stuff

Smells of cigarette smoke

YANBU. I sent two dresses back to H&M for this exact reason recently. They arrived via courier and absolutely reeked of smoke. Not good enough.

I told him to get a grip he just didn't want the courier to get shouted at but I haven't paid good money for smelly clothes!

Yesterday's delivery turned up today smelly as well so I've complained again and got it refunded.
