To ask you to tell me positive things about metronidazole?

Started metronidazole for an infected wisdom tooth. Googled it and scared myself half to death. It seems everyone felt awful on it and now I don't know if I'm feeling awful because of the infection or the tablets!

My anxiety is through the roof; can anyone reassure me, please?

It’s bloody amazing if you have a hint of nausea! I rate it xxx

ethelfleda · 08/12/2017 21:50

Aye - its fine - just don't take on an empty stomach and don't drink even one drop of alcohol while taking it and you'll be fine. I just had a slightly furry tongue that's all. Also, get some probiotics in as well to take

And stop googling!! You'll be fine on it!

TacoFlavouredKisses · 08/12/2017 21:51

You'll be fine! I don't recall feeling off on them apart from when (as a very silly student) I drank at the end of the course. What followed was like something from The Exorcist Xmas Grin

NannyR · 08/12/2017 21:51

I've had it for a tooth infection and a tonsil abscess and I didn't have any bad side effects either time. Just remember to avoid even the tiniest amount of alcohol.

AntiHop · 08/12/2017 21:51

I was prescribed it after labour. I don't remember it causing any problems.

RunFatGirlRuuuuuun · 08/12/2017 21:53

kitkat do you mean metoclopromide? Metronidazole is more likely to cause nausea.

It's a good antibiotic OP. Whatever you do don't drink alcohol.

Ansumpasty · 08/12/2017 21:54

Thank you :) So angry at myself for googling it!

Don’t use mouthwash! I cannot overemphasise this point.

It does work, and that’s the important thing. But OMG, I wish someone had warned me not to gargle and saved me a night on the bathroom floor.

Ansumpasty · 08/12/2017 21:56

I used mouthwash yesterday..should it be ok now? Haven't used any today since I started the tablets

treeofhearts · 08/12/2017 21:58

It's one of very few I can take. Never had any trouble with it; as long as you eat with it and don't drink alcohol it's fine.

dingdongdigeridoo · 08/12/2017 21:59

Had it for an infected wisdom tooth. Yeah it can make you feel a bit sick and give you a dodgy stomach. But I went from being in total agony and not being able to close my mouth properly to feeling better in about two days. So it’s worth it.

You need something harsh for dental abscesses. They are nasty stuff.

Partyfops · 08/12/2017 21:59

I had it for 5 days last week (dry socket) it was completely fine.

Careful of things like mince pies etc.

Fairylea · 08/12/2017 22:00

I’ve had it a few times for dental problems and never had any issues and I’m someone with a whole host of chronic autoimmune disorders etc etc. It’s really great stuff and really works!

Ansumpasty · 08/12/2017 22:00

You are a lovely lot, thank you 😃

treeofhearts · 08/12/2017 22:01

You'd know it if it wasn't ok OP. You'd be vomiting by now. The mouthwash thing is due to the alcohol in them. It really does react violently with alcohol. All ABs say not to drink with them but this one means it.

clippityclock · 08/12/2017 22:01

You just can't drink any alcohol with it because it may make you feel sick. It doesn't to everyone though. You'll be fine and its the one of the best for tooth infections.

cazzyg · 08/12/2017 22:01

I've taken it also for a wisdom tooth infection and it worked. You'll only be taking it for a short time and I certainly didn't experience any horrible side effects.

You do need to stay off the booze though. If you drink on metronidazole it can make you pretty ill.

Kittenswithattitudeandchickens · 08/12/2017 22:03

I’ve had and drank alcohol cos I didn’t realise you shouldn’t, all fine!

Boredomismyenemy · 08/12/2017 22:03

I've had it several times for recurrent wisdom tooth infections. It made me feel
a bit nauseous. But the most important thing is it clears the infection.

Murine · 08/12/2017 22:06

My 15mo had a week's course for a dreadful bacterial skin infection as a complication from hand, foot and mouth and it worked absolute miracles! She seemed happy enough in herself though off her food for a few days.

Threehoursfromhome · 08/12/2017 22:07

It made me feel very tired, but it was a hell of a lot better than the dental abscess I was taking it for.

jacks11 · 08/12/2017 22:08

The most obvious positive is that it will help to get rid of the infection you have. Up to you whether you take it or not, but don't really understand the drama.

Avoid alcohol and take with food, most likely you'll be fine. Unless you have a major allergy- which you'd know about very quickly. You might feel a bit off, but feeling a bit squeamish is a small price to pay for getting better and certainly better than an uncontrolled infection.

Racmactac · 08/12/2017 22:10

Didn't have any side effects at all but did completely avoid alcohol

Hulder · 08/12/2017 22:13

It made me better.

Yes, couldn't drink any alcohol and had a horrible metallic taste in my mouth the whole time but that was minor compared to the main point, it made my dental abscess go away.

uncoolnn · 08/12/2017 22:13

Absolutely fab antibiotic but please don't mix with alcohol. Speaking from experience
