To ask you to tell me positive things about metronidazole?

Ansumpasty · 08/12/2017 21:48

Started metronidazole for an infected wisdom tooth. Googled it and scared myself half to death. It seems everyone felt awful on it and now I don't know if I'm feeling awful because of the infection or the tablets!

My anxiety is through the roof; can anyone reassure me, please?

I had a rash all over my body and big welts on my back from Metronizadole. It also triggered lymphodema in my arm (post breast cancer surgery). Think I was just unlucky.

Tattytinsel · 09/12/2017 21:53

I’ve taken it for a non dental related issue but it was very effective and I had no side effects. I also googled and worried myself but it was fine! Dr and pharmacist couldn’t stress the no alcohol rule enough so definitely avoid it.

applesareredandgreen · 09/12/2017 21:57

I've always lost weight when taking it due to no alcohol!!! (Obviously not a benefit if you don't drink, or don't need to lose weight....)

Batfurger · 09/12/2017 22:00

What do you think will happen to you? FFS, why did you go o get a prescription if you think google and mumsnet are more helpful.

Trinity clearly knows her pharmacology Hmm nothing like a spot of evidence based practice is there.

Literally cannot roll my eyes hard enough at the drama mums netters put into routine healthcare.

BarrowInFurnessBusDepot · 09/12/2017 22:08

It treated my extremely painful tooth abscess and prevented me developing sepsis after my hand went purple and infected following a cat bite.

Never had any side effects.

Cosmic123 · 09/12/2017 22:51

A pharmacist told me never to read side effects whether on the Internet or in the leaflet with the tablets. The mind is very powerful, even the thought that you're going to feel sick can make you feel sick. I've taken it twice. Once it didn't affect me at all. The second time I felt sick, this was after I'd googled the side effects when the dentist kept dramatically telling me not to drink on it.

Cosmic123 · 09/12/2017 22:53

@dawnc27 lol!!!

Candlelight234 · 09/12/2017 23:17

I had it for a post surgery wound infection, along with another antibiotic I can't recall the name of. I had thrush on my tongue afterwards, and horrendous shits & bowel pains whilst taking it. Nurses really impressed on me how I mustn't drink whilst taking it. It worked though.

Ansumpasty · 13/12/2017 07:02

Just come back to this, thanks for all the replies.
I felt fine for 3 days and now have an upset stomach and awful nausea. Tooth better though and today is my last pill so hopefully it goes away soon.
Batfurger Aren't you just a delightful person Hmm

Heed the avoid even a drop of alcohol for 48 hrs after last dose/whilst taking it advice. Voice of bitter experience here.

Actually I was intending to avoid alcohol and someone deliberately bought me an alcoholic drink even though I'd asked for soft drink. They thought it was funny. I did not!

JamPasty · 13/12/2017 08:31

I find bananas are good when it comes to settling stomachs upset by antibiotics

FreeNiki · 13/12/2017 08:33

I started to feel better from the pain of the infection in my wisdom tooth in less than 24 hours.

The pain from the tooth was far far worse than anything metronidazole can do. I felt ok on it.

FreeNiki · 13/12/2017 08:35

Batfurger has a point. You can get heart infections from infected teeth. It can be very very serious. The benefits outweigh the side effects of antibiotics.

But people run to Google and mumsnet for advice after seeing a qualified healthcare professional. Shrugs.

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2017 08:45

No medical training here but I did work in a dentist's for a few years. As I understand it, penicillin and metronidazole work differently, so you might prescribe one for one sort of tooth infection and the other for a different sort. Am wondering if the pp who said it doesn't work was prescribed the wrong one for the job. Heavy duty infections may call for both, and that's when your tum is most likely to give grief (been there, done that, but my word, anything is worth it to get rid of an abscess). Sadly, if you can't take metronidazole, penicillin (or erythromycin if you can't take that either) is your only option and it's not nearly as effective in some circumstances.

FreeNiki · 13/12/2017 08:49

Annie my dentist prescribed both for post op infection. Amoxicillin and metronidazole, 3 times a day for a week.

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2017 08:56

FreeNiki, one's for aerobic and the other for anaerobic bacteria, I think. Obviously they weren't taking any chances with you! The only time I can remember taking both is when I had a massive tooth abscess and it certainly worked.

Ansumpasty · 13/12/2017 09:29

Freeniki My dentist gave me the choice of 2 antibiotics and gave me the choice of starting them right away or waiting 2 days or so to see if my body could clear it. I didn't intend on not taking it, I just wanted to know what to expect

The positive thing about it is it cures the infection you have. Do you need more than that? Confused

AboutAGallonofDietCoke · 13/12/2017 09:33

I’ve taken it a few times years back, I’ve also drunk on it before no problem, but I am the exception rather than the rule I believe!
It was fine, it cured the infection and that’s the point!

FreeNiki · 13/12/2017 09:39

Anniegetyourgun this was 2 weeks post extraction and the hospital never gave me anything despite having looked at it again.

My own dentist took one look at it and said I had a nasty infection and was appalled the hospital left never gave anything.

VileyRose · 13/12/2017 09:48

I've had it numerous times and been fine. It worked!

Gudgyx · 13/12/2017 10:18

The bloody devils medicine that stuff!

I had it IV post abdo surgery and my god I was ill. Not good being cut from chest to pubic bone and having to be sick constantly because of the antibiotics. Ended up begging them to take me off it so I could get better!
