How many people do you buy Christmas presents for?

Spangles1963 · 08/12/2017 18:39

Just that really. I only have a small family (parents both dead and 2 brothers, one lives abroad, other I have no contact with) so it's only my DD,DGD and son-in-law and best friend. But I admit I've been amazed at the number of people that I know,or have read about that buy Christmas presents for what seems like an incredibly large number of people. Even when I was at college, many years ago,I can recall class mates saying they were buying presents for their second cousins, their next door neighbours, great uncles and aunts as well as the usual parents and siblings.

Skarossinkplunger · 08/12/2017 22:17
  1. All adults.
Sniv · 08/12/2017 22:24

Proper gifts for DP, mum, dad, brother and one friend.
Token gifts for 2 god parents, 2 grandparents and a secret santa.

Rebeccatheold · 08/12/2017 22:27

9 - Parents, brother, SIL, DP, DPs parents, best friend, family friend (usually donation to charity). Oh and something for the 3 dogs!

Gwenhwyfar · 08/12/2017 22:29
  1. 3 brothers and my mum. One of my brothers give me a present from him and his girlfriend, but I haven't so far said that my present to him is to her as well.
I receive more than I give because I still get presents from two aunts. I suppose some of you will think badly of me for not giving back to them, but in my family we usually give our own presents to extended family when we get married. As a spinster, I suppose I'll never have to.
ImDoingLaundry · 09/12/2017 00:11

26 people in total. DP and our 2DC, his family, my family, my goddaughter and 2 secret Santa presents (DPs work colleagues and my classmates). A lot of my family have birthdays around Christmas too, so we try to do inexpensive but thoughtful gifts.

Corcory · 09/12/2017 00:25

26!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 09/12/2017 00:37

4 of my five DC and my (only) DiL. MY 5th DC gets cash and a packet of Werther's Originals because he lives away and if we gave him "stuff" he would just have to lug it home on the coach/train so we give cash and he can use it for whatever he wants. My niece and nephew get a token present to unwrap (eg. a pair of earrings/socks or similar and £20)
We don't buy for anyone else because money is very tight and they know we love them because we tell them so, and sometimes throught the year, if we see something lovely that would suit them "just so" we get a little something as and when.

AnnabelleLecter · 09/12/2017 00:45

DC
DH
Parents
3 Elderly relatives
Nephews/niece
Great nephew/niece
One friend plus two children
20 in all

Pollypudding · 09/12/2017 00:58

Forty! Wish I had not counted that! Two big families, and also buy some for friend’s children. I save throughout the year though and all small presentspapart from my own children.

LackOfAdhesiveDucks · 09/12/2017 03:08

Not many. Mum, dad, sister, one other family member (secret Santa so who that is varies) and the daughters of two of my friends. Oh and I chip in with my parents towards my grandparent’s presents as we usually try to get them something big rather than many small gifts.

Buildalegohouse · 09/12/2017 03:23

Husband
Daughter
3 x goddaughters
Mum
Dad
Brother
28 x pupils in my class ( I always buy my class a book each at Christmas)
Work secret Santa
Close work friends x3
DD’s nursery key worker

DH is in charge of sorting for his family (Mum, Dad, 2x sisters, 3x nephews, 1x neice,1x godson, 1x work secret Santa) plus me and DD

I didn’t think it was many but it does seem a lot written down all in one place!

Spangles1963 · 09/12/2017 15:51

I’d love love to cut the list down and have already chopped about 12 people off the list from last year when I was on mat leave (good excuse). Any tips welcomed!

dreamies · 09/12/2017 16:49

Ds,
Dm
1 sister
2 friends
2 niece/nephew
2 work friends
So 9 this year, I've more than halved that from last year by not buying for 2 other friends 7 kids or my siblings and partners cuts off another 4. It's been a tight year

ChristmasFOG · 09/12/2017 17:05

2 - my own child + secret Santa at work

(7 if you include the 5 that DH buys too)

My parents are dead
I only do birthday gifts now with friends and friends children
My brother and I stopped exchanging gifts about 15 yrs ago and he has no children (we have a good relationship and regularly buy each other meals out etc)
DH buys for his parents now (I used to do it but...handed the job back) and his three nieces/nephews (just money - I bought the gifts when they were younger).

I snapped a few years ago when I had to make two trips (couldn't carry them in one trip) to the post office with multiple bags of gifts to post and was drowning under the excessiveness of my son's possessions at home.

Interestingly, it was only the PA gift giver (most gifts from her were clearly re-gifted/used and usually inappropriate e.g. sz 8 jumper for me when I was clearly a size 14-16) who rarely acknowledged the gifts we sent, let alone thanked us, that didn't like the fact that we were stopping.

DotDashBeep · 09/12/2017 17:07

2 + a secret Santa.

noeffingidea · 09/12/2017 17:23

6 all together . Son and daughter in law will probably ask for money or choose and order their own gift, which I will pay for, my adult (student) son will probably want money, though will get him a couple of small presents to unwrap, my 2 grandsons (parents will let me know what to get them) and the only tricky one, my daughter who has autism and doesn't particularly like anything.
I used to have to buy for my ex-inlaws as well, and I found it very stressful.
Never really bought presents for my family, friends or kids teachers.

user1471538348 · 09/12/2017 17:28

Forty two!
I just counted.....
OMG!!!!

Plus stockings for my children (who are 19 and 22...)
Plus the odd bottle of wine for neighbours etc

I don't spend a lot on each individual present (she said quickly trying to make it better). When there are these threads about how much people spend on Xmas I'm always pleasantly surprised as I compare quite well! It's the wrapping that gets to me - thank god for present bags.

And this is less than it was. My parents are no longer around (and I used to help each of them do a 'stocking' for each other - they had been together over 60 years by the end and old habits die hard even when shopping opportunities are limited - they did give me the cash!). The best present I used to buy is sadly no longer required as I was widowed eighteen months ago - but I'm not beyond treating myself to something I might have bought for him that the two of us would have liked (a CD or a foodie thing or something) or even something he might have bought me....

Whichschool2020 · 09/12/2017 17:30

In laws (2)
3 sister in laws

FuzzyCustard · 09/12/2017 17:31

8
DH, mum, 3 adult children, 3 grandchildren.

CharlieSierra · 09/12/2017 17:52

DH, 3 adult children & 2 partners, 2 grandsons, 2 nieces, 2 great nieces and 2 great nephews, Dad. Then as well I do work secret santa, 4 bottles of decent wine for my direct reports, cleaner.

The12DaysOfChristmasArentInNov · 09/12/2017 18:24

15 - parents, siblings, nephews/nieces, DH and DC. Adult presents are token gifts.

LockedOutOfMN · 09/12/2017 18:35

DH (stocking only)
2 DCs
My parents
My 3 siblings, 1 BIL and 1 SIL
Work secret santa
"Work angel" (like a year round secret santa)
11 people who work for me
Hamper for DH's parents and 2 brothers who spend Christmas period with DH's parents - stuff like food, booze, and a board or card game

I feel like it's not many but written down it looks like quite a lot! They're all quite small gifts except for the DCs'.

Also a close friend's birthday is on the 21st so buying her present is essentially Christmas shopping. (I wrap it in birthday paper... I'm not a cretin).
