How many people do you buy Christmas presents for?

Just that really. I only have a small family (parents both dead and 2 brothers, one lives abroad, other I have no contact with) so it's only my DD,DGD and son-in-law and best friend. But I admit I've been amazed at the number of people that I know,or have read about that buy Christmas presents for what seems like an incredibly large number of people. Even when I was at college, many years ago,I can recall class mates saying they were buying presents for their second cousins, their next door neighbours, great uncles and aunts as well as the usual parents and siblings.

Around 20. Lots of children in our families! But I only actually buy maybe 5 of them. DH does the rest Smile

Fink · 08/12/2017 21:09

12, all immediate family or partners thereof.

What gets me every year is how much more expensive it is as a single person. E.G. I buy a present each for dsis and her husband (2x presents, 1x income), they buy a present for me between them (1x present, 2x income). I don't really mind or have any sensible solution (one year we did Secret Santa for all the adults in the family, it didn't work and was horrendous) but I don't think the people in couples in my family realise the imbalance even exists.

PurplePotatoes · 08/12/2017 21:14

Family - 2dc, DH, DM, DF, MIL, FIL (separated), my uncle/auntie and DH's grandma.
Friends- 2 and their DC, another friends DD

So 16 plus nursery key workers.

Some of those are just a token bottle of wine or chocs for the adults though. No one other than immediate family are over 5-10 pounds.

Alexindisguise · 08/12/2017 21:20

35

That's mostly just close family and two secret Santa presents for work, teachers and sport coaches.

Stopped buying for friends and their dc a few years ago to try and trim it back a bit. Still a ridiculous number though.

n0ne · 08/12/2017 21:27

DH, DCs, PILs, SIL, just one for my family as we do secret santa. Best mate, one other mate who always insists on getting me something, and one for her DC. So that's 10, which is plenty!

burntoutmum · 08/12/2017 21:28

Parents- both sides
My brother- no children
DH step sister- no children
2x DS
2 Nieces
1 nephew

DS’s are going to buy presents together for DH and I, which is exciting as I rarely get anything on Christmas Day that I haven’t bought myself! They’re 9 and 14.

2 friends and their 2 children. I’m not keen on this but one of the mums is very into buying each other presents so I’ve sucked it up. I don’t generally buy for friends or children

Prettyprettygood · 08/12/2017 21:33

3 dc, 2 sdc, dp, mum, nan, sister, nephew. Dp buys for his side

PurpleMinionMummy · 08/12/2017 21:35

Me - 10 all immediate family
Dh - 5 all immediate family
Dd normally gets something for her bff

Amanduh · 08/12/2017 21:35

I buy for 24 people - more than 24 presents though as one is DC. All family, and a couple of friends

SpottyGecko · 08/12/2017 21:37

Just counted - 30!

cheminotte · 08/12/2017 21:38

About 12 plus a secret Santa at work. I don't buy for any friends, only close family.

greedycushionhoarder · 08/12/2017 21:40

26, 5 are our kids and 2 are grandchildren then rest are our parents and extended family and a few friends. We have a spreadsheet so we can keep a check on what we're spending. We buy over a few months, just a few left to buy for now and at just over £900.

tangledyarn · 08/12/2017 21:50

Immediate family (mum, dad, brother, sister) sisters boyfriend, family friends visiting for xmas, best friend and 2 kids, another friend and her daughter, friends 2 kids and my partner and the cats! Partner does his own families shopping which is minimal.

MiddlingMum · 08/12/2017 21:54

Six.

Peanutbuttercheese · 08/12/2017 21:56

DH, DS, nieces, no adults but that's what my family do.

DH buys gifts for his family.

punkpuffin · 08/12/2017 21:59

C0untDucku1a · 08/12/2017 22:00

Husband buys for two. And yet i still get crap.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 08/12/2017 22:01

Dc, dh, myself and my mum. 5 people in total and altogether we've probably spent £250 at the very most. We are absolutely skint though so can't afford to buy gifts for all and sundry.

Jerseysilkvelour · 08/12/2017 22:02

Immediate family, so about 6 gifts plus what I get for by DC.

Am learning I don't have to reciprocate if someone outside family buys me or DC a gift, still feels uncomfortable though! But it's much easier to set a rule of family only than go trying to keep up with everyone, which I just don't have the money for.

MohoBoho · 08/12/2017 22:02

Husband

mrsm12 · 08/12/2017 22:09

Just counted, 32!!
Dh, dc x3
Dm, df, dmil
Dsil and bil
Db, sil, dn
Aunties x5
Cousins kids x7 (more like nieces and nephews)
Nanny
Friends x4
Secret santa x2
Teacher x1

TabbyTigger · 08/12/2017 22:09

Hmm. I’ll have to list to remember. Outside of immediate family (DC/DH):
PIL (my parents dead/estranged)
Ex-H
5 DBs, 3 DSs and their families (23 DNs!! It’s a nightmare!!)
My 5 closest friends and small things for their kids.
Then we do a secret Santa with the three other families we spend Christmas with so that’s one more.

DH does his siblings and parents (I input a little). That list has made me realise I end up buying an awful lot Blush I also end up paying for things for DCs’ friends.
