To wonder why MN is so left wing/liberal?

MN hates Brexit, the tories, pink toys, violent video games... you get the idea. But in real life most women don't mind buying gender specific toys/clothes and the election/brexit female vote was about 50/50. So what makes this place 90% lefty/lib when general society is either split or completely reversed? Confused

I don;t know, makeourfuture. People are very ambivalent about it in parts of the UK.

And it's been this way for a long time. When I was at university, people studying sciences were known as 'NARGs' - 'Not A Real Gentleman'. There was something a bit 'Non-U' about being scholarly, especially in anything other than Classics. And that's not to mention the resentment and ambivalence about the entry of women, working class people, and other disenfranchised groups into Higher Education.

It's a real mystery.

I agree with others that MN is very middle class rather than left or right wing. It tends to always support one of the modern trendy right or left viewpoints on just about every thread. It is very conformist in conventional.

Truly radical original views on either side of the largely artificial and meaningless left right swing are what is absent.

I don't think MN is particularly left wing. I'd see it's pretty mixed to be honest.

MN is very left-leaning. FFS, before the last election someone started a thread every fucking day saying how amazing Jeremy Corbyn was.

Also agree about the shy Tories - some of the most strident Lefties are so rude and nasty about people who don't think like them that it puts people off. You're hardly going to come on a political thread and feel comfortable disagreeing after 100 posts saying that Tories eat children for breakfast and torture kittens for fun. Lefties paint themselves as the nice people, the fair people, the compassionate, understanding people and everyone else is just mean and dreadful. Sanctimonious sums it up.

I'm you're classic floating voter - have voted for all parties except the SNP. But in its present state, I'd never contemplate voting Labour. Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott are just a joke.

The statistical analysis re: higher education levels meaning more likely to vote remain No one would dispute this but we actually live in a democracy where everyone has one vote in an election. That is a bitter pill for some to swallow.
There must be plenty of people like me surely? Neither left nor right, just wanting a stable fair society? I hope I have a social conscience and in many ways I’m quite left wing. And in others I’m not. I DO think the traditional left has let people down. And the current Tory lot are steadily asset stripping the country to line their own pockets. It’s bloody depressing. Where is the party of sensible politics? Someone who will invest in research and development and education, stop selling everything off, build more social housing because it saves the country money Protect the environment, etc etc. Both sides at the moment are like selfish squabbling children, they need their heads knocking together. I agree.

The fact that mumsnet needs people to be reasonably literate might mean that posters are more educated than average which could skew towards the left.

What total and utter bullshit. This is the sort of crap spewed out on here constantly. Honestly it's pathetic.

Because MN has a lot of women on it. Women are more likely to vote Labour than men.

What makes you think they were MNetters? Russia aren't the only people to pay folks to post on the internet with the intention of swaying voting intentions.

I've always found it 50/50. Very few alt right or alt left thankfully. But the shouty shouty warriors do get annoying - ps shouting at people via a keyboard will not get them to change their mind. These ones tend to stick out & thrive on message boards everywhere.

I personally don't like the education argument - it doesn't ring true and is quite insulting to everyone. The area I live in has a high proportion of degrees and masters and has a whopping Tory majority Hmmit also voted overwhelmingly to remain!

I think everyone has their own "echo chamber" ie. I wouldn't surround myself with people who had views I wasn't comfortable with and therefore would be more likely to hear views that match my own from friends etc. I'm not saying the mumsnet demographic is or isn't left wing but if you have a heavily right winged echo chamber it may feel more heavily weighted the other way when suddenly faced with lots of apposing ideas. Does that make sense? X

MN may or may not be left wing, but I don't think it's liberal.

I'm constantly amazed that the majority of responders on a lot of threads want legislation/policies/Them to ban whatever they don't agree with.

That said, while I despair of the ability of some MNers to see shades of grey, the discussion is much better here than many corners of the net- hence why I come.

Really? I've seen plenty of fairly far right apologise here of late. To be honest most people I know are left wing, even the well off ones, so this place is quite far to the right of my circle.

All the virulent Brexiteer posts on here suggest the opposite, op. I reckon it's about 50/50 Leave vs Remain.

@TammySwansonTwo this is exactly what I mean I think if someone is surrounded be right wing people they'd feel the opposite (this is the first time I've veered away from the pregnancy parts so couldn't actually say which way I feel it swings 🙈) x

I think of Mumsnet as right of centre politically-soft Daily Mail if you like. Very socially small-c Conservative. And depressingly anti-feminist.

Depends

I am left wing and I like that aspect of MN , I also have learnt a lot around SN and MH issues from reading around here

But it’s very white and poor on racial issues and trans issues (in my humble opinion )

Are we really saying highest Academic qualification level is relevant to how 'educated'.....you are?

Yes. That is literally what the word educated means- the amount of education you've had.
