That Britain should rethink BREXIT

David Davis admitting that the impact of Brexit will be equal to the credit crunch should surely make the country revisit the decision.
Why put your country through such a difficult period?

peregrina you are right and said it much more clearly than me. I was just hoping to get across the point that active tax payers who don't need access to the NHS/care system would be replaced by retirees with complex health needs.

Maryz · 07/12/2017 16:49

" I would like to stay in EU with controlled immigration"

I would like to have my cake and eat it.

Grin or perhaps Sad

Maryz · 07/12/2017 16:51

Bobby, the advantage to Trump's election is that at least the US people will have the chance in four years to reverse the decision, if they want to.

The problem with Brexit is that once done, it can't be undone.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 07/12/2017 16:55

I would like to have my cake and eat it.

gosh no, we're British we should be allowed to have our cake, eat it and not put any weight on either.

If we do gain weight then it's certainly the fault of a dastardly EU regulation that only applies to us and was snuck through by unelected undemocratic bastards in Brussels out to get us whilst they feast on caviar and champagne ... like Marie Antionette. She was Austrian and French, doesn't get much worse than that. Cake, it's not fair, we shouldn't have to have cake. Or if we do we want chlorinated cake from the US, that will be much better and will teach those Europeans a lesson that they won't have access to our cake market anymore.

nigelschristmasham · 07/12/2017 16:59

It becomes more and more absurd by the day.
I think we would look quite stupid to try and change our minds now. In the same way we look quite stupid to leave in the first place.
But to have no concrete plans or idea as to what we want and enter into the negotiations? It's just incredible. And not in a good way.

curryforbreakfast · 07/12/2017 17:02

I think we would look quite stupid to try and change our minds now

Quite the opposite. Admitting you made a mistake and ask for help in changing it is a brave and noble thing to do. Blundering along turning a bad decision into an epic disaster is what is looking stupid.

KennDodd · 07/12/2017 17:04

No, we shouldn't rethink, we should just bin it as it was such shit idea in the first place. Switzerland had the good sense to largely ignore a similar referendum as it would have proved to damaging to the country. The UK seems to have decided to make to make itself an international laughing stock instead of just doing the sensible thing like Switzerland.

No I know because the glorious, not-at-all-corrupt EU would never be biased, devious or underhand in anyway would they? I'm sure it's perfectly balanced....

ClaudiaApple · 07/12/2017 17:13

I don't like the EU, but I prefer the Brexiters ideas even less. Their arguments add up to 'it's what we voted for'

I need more than that. We can control immigration within the EU but the Tory party decided it was too expensive back in the noughties.

Brexit is an unmitigated disaster but I think the tide is turning now and I think as a country we are finally coming together against it.

KennDodd · 07/12/2017 17:13

Crackednips

Are you sure it's the EU you're talking about there and not the Tory party?

Crackednips · 07/12/2017 17:17

I think as a country we are finally coming together against it

I think you are dreaming Claudia , but if it helps...

Yes, I'm quite sure KenDodd.

curryforbreakfast · 07/12/2017 17:17

No I know because the glorious, not-at-all-corrupt EU would never be biased, devious or underhand in anyway would they? I'm sure it's perfectly balanced

Thats not an answer. Thats a biased rant. Why would the EU be served by telling themselves lies about Brexit, exactly?

KennDodd · 07/12/2017 17:28

I think as a country we are finally coming together against it

I'm afraid I agree with Crackednips the more idiotic Brexit is shown to be the more fanatical some people get about it. Just wait until the right wing (off shore billionaire owned) press start screeching about immigration to stir them all up.

And I disagree with people saying that it's just the government cocking it up, they are doing about as good a job as anybody could when trying to make a silk purse from a pigs ear. Whichever way you look at it, it's still a pigs ear.

Maryz · 07/12/2017 17:33

I'm still waiting for a non-circular answer to "what do you hope to gain from leaving the EU" question.

Some other answer than "we will have left the EU" would be good.

Possibly not the other universal answer of "We'll be better off because we'll be better off"

Crackednips · 07/12/2017 17:35

With political corruption comes lies. I couldn't say whether or not they're lying to themselves or not over Brexit. Though I wouldn't put it past them

Do you really wish to get into a discussion on the lies the EU have been telling. Not just about Brexit?

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 07/12/2017 17:37

Do you really wish to get into a discussion on the lies the EU have been telling. Not just about Brexit?

I would be very interested in hearing about the lies - both Brexit and non-Brexit related. Please enlighten me.

Crackednips · 07/12/2017 17:38

We'll be better off by regaining our sovereignty. This is important to people,,,

Financially who can say?

Sludgecolours · 07/12/2017 17:39

Crackednips please do! I would be genuinely happy to try and answer any specific instances you care to post about how the EU has lied, about Brexit or otherwise.

TheWorldAsh · 07/12/2017 17:39

@RubMyRhubarb numbers are irrelevant. It's percentages that matter and in this case it was too close to call either way.

Maryz · 07/12/2017 17:43

"With political corruption comes lies" - are you really sure you aren't talking about the Tories?

Maryz · 07/12/2017 17:45

How will you be better off regaining your sovereignty? What difference will it make?

To be honest, I wasn't aware you had lost it, but what do I know. Sovereignty seems to be a very airy-fairy thing.

Sludgecolours · 07/12/2017 17:55

Sovereignty is complex. You can be a totally sovereign nation and have no influence at all!

We lose a bit of sovereignty in our membership of NATO but that is deemed worth it for the security it brings us. Every time a nation signs an agreement, inside or outside the EU, they lose a bit if sovereignty. It is not always a bad thing! If God forbid Brexit goes through, we will still sign agreements with third parties and organisations, we will still lose some sovereignty in doing so. We lose sovereignty by being a member of the United Nation and the WTO.

Crackednips · 07/12/2017 18:05

Christmas is coming so we can start with Turkey. We were told they'd never be allowed to join..

Do you believe that?

sinceyouask · 07/12/2017 18:07

Who said Turkey would never be allowed to join? When did they say it? What was the context? For whom were they speaking?

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 07/12/2017 18:10

I would add that as it's been going on for nigh on 10 years I think you can be reasonably reassured that they won't be joining whilst Erdogan is in power.

It might be worth considering that there were also a lot of conditions imposed that had to be done before their application was considered. Conditions like having a free press, equality for women - all those horrible things the EU likes to 'dictate'.
