To ask how much you tip your hairdresser for Christmas?

This is a tricky one and wondered what others do. I sporadically tip my hairdresser throughout the year as it's flipping expensive as it is and I work freelance so often don't have much money to spare. Last Christmas I gave her £20 as a Christmas tip and she didn't thank me! (it was in a card which she opened after I'd left.)

Did I not tip her enough and how much should I tip when I get my hair done tomorrow? I don't want to be insulting but I'm not particularly flush at the moment.

I don't tip the hairdresser. He owns the salon and it costs me a fortune.

I tip £20 each time I visit (regardless of Christmas) and I know it goes into a shared pot for all the staff at my salon. My hairdresser is one of the owners.

No she didn't thank me so I felt slightly pissed off! lt's a central London salon (if that makes a difference) so maybe she gets people giving her £50 Christmas tips?! God knows!

I tip my hairdresser £5 each time I get my hair done. I don't give her a particular Christmas tip.

I don't usually tip but I do at Christmas, £10 each for colourist and stylist.

It's a central London salon, London hairdresser of the year multiple times etc. We go back a long way. My hairdresser started cutting my hair when I moved to London after uni. He was just a stylist (at a big name salon) and I was just an ambitious working class Northern girl who wanted to treat herself to a "proper" haircut for the first time ever. 20+ years later, he co-owns his own massively successful and award-winning salon and I earn a 6 figure salary in financial services. So there's an emotional connection for us. We've both done well for ourselves but we remember where we started and what we had to go through to drag ourselves up. And we're still the same people, just with better paid jobs!

I don't tip my hairdresser as she owns the salon and is a family friend of my mum's so it just feels weird to "tip", I also get my eyebrows waxed and my nails done by girls who work in the salon but since I've been going for years and know them all I don't have one fixed beautician I see every time so it feels weird to tip one and not the others because they happen to be the one who I have my last treatment before Xmas with.

To compromise, in my last appointment to the salon before Christmas, I usually take a box of chocolates/biscuits/sweets for them all and then a box of nice tea or coffee pods for their coffee maker ... costs me maybe £10-15 but is a "tip" all six of the staff can share in and is the fairest way I've found to do it without bankrupting myself to tip them all.

I give mine £5 each time and a bottle of prosecco at Xmas but I only live in South Wales.

Well it might be Bonnie, but the girls who do my hair are 20 and 24, not massive earners, lovely... and all they say is thank you!

I sort of do it as a Christmas present anyway.

@BonnieF I think you'll find if you speak to people in jobs that regularly attract tips, most of them don't find it demeaning. It's usually taken as a compliment on a job well done or indeed actually expected.

I dont tip in the card, I give it to her and say this is for you, have a lovely xmas

I think the point there is that it was in a card -if you weren’t there when it was opened, I wouldn’t expect her to say thank you afterwards (do you mean by text? Or next time you visit?) I would expect them to say thanks if you handed them the cash obviously!

I don’t tip during the year but I do at Christmas. In fact this has reminded me that I really need to make an appointment!

It costs bloody $200 for a cut and colour (in in Aus), I’m not tipping as well. I don’t care who owns the salon etc etc.
