To be pissed off with the mainstreaming of wigs. *Trivial*

I know this is a very pathetic and trivial AIBU, but bloody hell, it seems that wigs have taken over hair extensions!
I haven't been watching Strictly much this year, so I saw a bit on catch up tonight. To suddenly see Tess and Claudia's heads weighed down with ridiculous wigs that actually make the professional dancers' extensions look thin....
Am I the only person who thinks this looks awful? Will this trend end? If not, should I get extensions or an actual wig ffs?

I'd love wigs to be more mainstream, actually. I saved so much time plonking mine on when I had cancer. No faffing about with hairdryers and straighteners. I'm glad I have my hair back, but... eh. Effort!

I have been thinking the same myself! Everyone’s hair is getting bigger and bigger! Extensions just cannot compete! Let alone natural hair unless of course you won the hair lottery when you were born!

I wish that wigs were more acceptable! I look much better with a wig on than my naturally thin hair.

I was just hoping that we can all just be as we are, without having to put fake stuff on our heads.
I'm already battling against the Botox thing.
Perhaps I shall go and live in a cave.

Kate does have wonderful hair I do think she has some subtle filler extensions of the very best quality, although she still had lovely hair when she was first dating William it was not as big and bouncy as it is now, though I’m sure having the best hairdressers on hand does help somewhat.

I wear a wig and draw on eyebrows due to chemo treatment. A lot of people wear wigs. I don't know why hair extensions are seen as any better tbh. There is loads of variety regarding styles, not all involve big hair. There is nothing to be embarrassed or scathing about. People wear wigs, make up, dye their hair, wear false eyelashes. Why is one better than another?

They both have 'pieces' in. I don't think Kate did when she was first on the scene, but she does now.

Wigs, weaves and hairpieces have long been used a lot in Afro Caribbean hairdressing, and in films - they're just becoming more mainsteam in Caucasian hair.

Maybe it's a good thing that they're becoming the norm - it's literally normalising them and thus they're now an option for more people?

I think on one hand it’s yet another thing that could potentially look ridiculous, like huge pouty overlined lips. But on the other hand, if more people want to wear wigs then the number and quality of wigs should increase and hopefully the higher demand will bring the price down. All of which is better for people who do actually need wigs.

I wish wigs would go more mainstream. Wills and Harry are awful slapheads, and a good rug will sort them out.

Nothing good comes from having a baldy head of state.

I don’t like how big/extra long hair = beauty in society right now. Whether it’s wigs or hair extensions it’s the exaggerated volume of hair that I find annoying!

Wear a wig, if you want to OP. Don't if you don't want to. Other people wearing wigs are not judging you for not wearing one. You don't need to vindicate the decisions you make, concerning your appearance, by looking to what the presenters on Strictly look like! You wouldn't go about your normal business wearing an evening dress either, would you?

Fine hair can look lovely too OP if is shiny and well cut, sometimes too much hair like how Tess wears hers sometimes can look a bit over powering and it can be all you notice about a person.

I've lost a lot of hair due to hormone treatments and my hair is now horribly thin - haven't worn it down for well over a year. I'd love a good wig but imagine they're uncomfortable.

I hear you OP. When people on TV start to look so removed from real people it’s not great. Everything about them becomes larger than life - the hair, the face, the tan, the clothes, the shoes, the teeth... it’s hard to compete when you’re just a regular person without a team of wardrobe/hair/makeup to get us out the door.
I also agree with those saying that wigs should be normalised.
Soooo... off I trot! Back to my fence.

Your problem (imo) is you feel pressured by popular culture.

In the real world no one cares (much) if your botoxed, wearing a wig, got makeup on.

In my experience all anyone (who are not living in a shallow narcissistic bubble) care about is that your clean so you don't smell and that your wearing clothes that seem appropriate to the situation your in ie not turning up to work in your pj's etc.

If you want to wear a wig lovely, if you don't who the fuck cares!

My mum and all her mates had wigs in the sixties. They used to drop them into the hairdressers to have their hair done, while they went off to do something more interesting, and picked them up once they were finished. Win win!

I'm currently looking at wigs myself, I'm about to start chemo, and I was wondering where they get them from? The really good ones seem to be horrendously expensive. I've got a two year old and I don't want her to be scared if I look too different. Sad

Having fine AF hair I love the idea of a wig, but they're another tier in an already expensive beauty regime. Every month or so I pay for a trim or a cut and colour, my eyebrows waxed and tinted (and have a tattoo topped up every year), gel nails, the occasional fake tan, using pricey makeup. I still only look average and I'm exhausted already ffs, I can't be adding a wig in there!

Also I'd worry about the provenance of the hair if it did become a mass market thing. A lot of these wigs and extensions are real human hair. I had mini extensions in for a few months and every time I saw them I felt guilty for the Asian lady whose hair I had stuck on my head. The cheaper the product is, the less the women at the end of that chain will get in their hand.

She there's a woman here who runs a place called Tresses and she's really good. She's won a CBE or similar for the help she's given women in NI and the rest of Ireland. She has an online shop - http://www.wigs-ireland.iee* - but there'll be somewhere local to you in a similar vein. Maybe there's a local support group who could help you in the right direction. In Tresses they help you pick a wig and colour and style it to your preference, like any other hair cut. Don't be worried Thanks
