Oh my God. Doug Jones won? I can't believe it.

TheClaws · 13/12/2017 06:43

That’s all right Ouais. In Australia we still have a paper voting system, and voting is compulsory. Not everyone completes their ballot correctly, though - this is termed a ‘donkey’ vote. Of course this is sometimes on purpose, particularly if pictures of genitalia appear on the ballot. Also some voters haven’t decided who they are going to vote for right up to the moment they are standing in the ballot box. These voters are called ‘swinging voters’. Only time in my life I’ve been a swinger Grin

This is very cheering news. My only worry is that the GOP will assume it is all down to how repellent Moore was, rather than finally waking up to how toxic Trump is for them. He needs to be impeached before he starts a war with NK.

Roussette · 13/12/2017 07:15

Woke far too early, first thing I did was turn on Sky (as they report US news more than BBC) and was delighted to hear Doug Jones has won!

Already they are putting it down to the 'lies' about Moore... well... it didn't help did it?! As one tweet sai 'we don't need another sexual predator in office'

No way on this earth did 45 write that tweet. When has he ever ever conceded on anything? He was in a rage, the phone was wrestled from him by the night watch care aide, and they sent it. When he wakes this morning, betcha the tweets won't be quite so conciliatory.

Can anyone explain what this tweet means? It's just that over here in UK it's one man one vote, how can a person not be entitled to a vote? Does it mean that if you have been convicted of something, you are not allowed to vote, even if you are a free man?

Alabama just repealed much of it’s 1901 disenfranchisement law, a Jim Crow law that allowed each county to define which convictions they could use as an excuse to take away someone’s vote. Of course, that had been used (along with a range of other Jim Crow laws) to target blacks.

EdithSitwell · 13/12/2017 07:21

Great result! So pleased. Well done Alabama!!

lettuceWrap · 13/12/2017 07:22

Just woke, did my usual early morning “Trump watch”... this morning I smiled! Decency prevailed in Alabama. The voters of Alabama sending a message loud and clearSmile

lionheart · 13/12/2017 07:26

Hurray! had to stop watching last night because it reminded me of the other election.

Just saw Clinton's response (she was on stage at an event at the time).

Smile
lettuceWrap · 13/12/2017 07:26

Always, Oh my, your sex/race vote graph is fairly sad/horrible/disappointing for reasons I’m not sure I can articulate before my first cup of coffee...

lionheart · 13/12/2017 07:33

Runner up has still not conceded.

Lweji · 13/12/2017 07:41

Glad to see I was wrong in my pessimism. Star

Yep there’s too much dignity in it to be plausible that it’s his own work

As well as too many complete sentences and not enough words in the wrong place.

lettuce there are lots of reactions from black women on twitter fairly angrily deriding that they have to “save us all” time and time again yet still are on the receiving end of most of the hate and systemic oppression that makes their lives so much harder.

That white men and women were not so fazed by moore’s “Slavery were good times” and other white supremacist sentiments (as well as contempt for rule of law, contempt of women and paedophilia) is disappointing but how glorious that he didn’t win.

1.Just spoke with a source in the Mobile (AL) County NAACP. Here are some things that are happening today on the ground in Alabama that did not happen in the 2016 election. Thread:

  1. The state NAACP instructed its local branches to call every registered voter in the state who did not vote in 2016. The Lower Alabama chapter made it through the entire list successfully.
  2. A dozen paid canvassers have been going door to door in the Mobile area all week. That did not happen in 2016,
  3. What was last year an ad hoc effort by “a group of friends” to offer rides to the polls is today more than a dozen organizations doing rides-to-the-polls with resources for drivers.
  4. Once the Jones campaign had money it bought billboards in African-American neighborhoods with the election date and a quick blurb about Jones. This was not on highways but in places where one normally sees fast-food or cigarette ads.
  5. The Mobile NAACP crunched the numbers and showed local pastoral leadership that whatever they had done in recent years to turn out voters wasn’t working. The pastors then pushed for and got resources to do congregation-wide robo calls and voter reg tables at church events.
  6. At school alumni parties the local NAACP handed out several thousand flyers with election dates, registration deadlines, absentee deadlines, voter ID requirements. They also brought these paper reminders door to door in a canvass.
  7. Mobile is one of the redder counties in Alabama. Even larger efforts have done many of the same things in Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham and the so-called Black Belt since resources arrived in mid-November.
  8. Beyond the NAACP, there are many other black voter mobilization groups with boots on the ground in AL communities doing similar, extremely important work. One of them is The Ordinary People Society (TOPS). TOPS registered 5,000 in 22 jails and 10 prisons in the last two weeks!
10. Note: These resources were provided by many of you. We raised $10,000+ here on Twitter in a single evening for the Jones campaign. Many others did the same with their networks. This thread shows how much of it was spent on field organizing. 11. Nothing like these grassroots efforts happened in 2016 in Alabama. The people who have been doing them are feeling good today. They think they have a shot. And they’ll be working hard until polls close to make it so. 12. These reports are also consistent with how the DNC spent money to win special elections in Virginia and other states. More money for field and GOTV. Less for TV ads. This is the @TomPerez era at work. End memo.
BiglyBadgers · 13/12/2017 08:00

Phew! I was so relieved to hear the Alabama result this morning. I think my already shaky faith in humanity might have been completely decimated if Moore had won Grin

lionheart · 13/12/2017 08:09

Really interesting Pain.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/12/2017 08:22

O HAPPY DAY!!!

Lweji · 13/12/2017 08:22

With his sense of opportunity, maybe Jones will run for the Presidency in 2020. 😎

Minimammoth · 13/12/2017 08:29

A calming tea for Bore and a celebratory hobnob for Alabama. Grin

OuaisMaisBon · 13/12/2017 08:31

Yes, that Al Giordano list is fascinating, thank you. Hope Dems learn from this.

Keir Starmer
@Keir_Starmer
Labour will back Dominic Grieve's amendment giving Parliament a proper say on the Brexit deal if he pushes it to a vote tonight. The terms of our future are not for the government alone to determine.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2017 08:36

Sorry, wrong thread. Need more sleep!

badbadhusky · 13/12/2017 08:48

No need for apologies Pain. This thread has it all!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2017 09:03

Let’s hope Moore concedes quickly. I fear a recount at the minimum.

BiglyBadgers · 13/12/2017 09:03

The Al Giordino thread is really good. It shows the importance of really understanding the people and the area and targeting effectively.
