An interesting long piece that is very worrying...

And up pops Oliver North, I remember him from the mid 80's

On BBC now is Obama's photographer during his two terms and they've just shown a montage of the best bits of Obama and it's almost made me tearful, god we miss him.

Different idealogical motivations, same shit probably sums it up bigly

Yup, basically. All dictatorships are different flavours of the same shit sandwich. But the ideological motivations have an impact on how people perceive that ideology in future. Fascism wasn't as universally despised until we had the Nazis doing their thing with it. I just wonder if having a dictatorship rise from capitalism and pushing clearly capitalist ideological concepts will change the way in which people look at capitalism in future.

I appreciate I am being very simplistic about this and that capitalism is an economic model rather than a political one (in theory). Also that it is very early in the morning for this sort of thing. Grin

Oooh lovely new thread! Will he still be there by the end of this one? Odd are getting better!

Ew. Well I went looking for a boar joke about Mr Shakespeare (him being of Warwickshire an' all).

And found another kind of bore and joke instead - rather a sick one.

I think I'd heard the name Jack Hadfield before, but he does seem a particularly charming specimen of the alt-right. Lovely how he speaks of women, too.Envy ^

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 05/12/2017 08:51

I heard Naomi klein on desert island discs and she was talking about how serendipitous it was that as she was writing her book “no logo” all about how corporations were like
Governments without borders, the occupy wall street movement was taking off and people were very anti corporations.

Seems a shame it fizzled out (I think) or at least, didn’t change the culture enough to avoid the slavish kowtowing to big money where we find ourselves today.

Just musing, but you could probably make a case that this is happening as a backlash against that movement and the growing dissatisfaction about capitalism in the young and minorities. The same way I think the rise in the alt-right is a backlash against the growing equality of women and minorities. Both these things combined have created a perfect storm of white, middle-aged rich men fighting against the end of their dominance and dragging other dissatisfied folk down with them. Interesting times and all that.

Let's hope it's the extinction burst, though my optimism has been tested in recent times.

However, here to stoke it up again Grin:

Deutsche Bank receives subpoena from Mueller on Trump accounts: source

www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-deutsche-bank/deutsche-bank-receives-subpoena-from-mueller-on-trump-accounts-source-idUSKBN1DZ0XN?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=Social

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller has asked Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) to share data on accounts held by U.S. President Donald Trump and his family, a person close to the matter said on Tuesday.

Germany’s largest bank received a subpoena from Mueller several weeks ago to provide information on certain money and credit transactions, the person added, confirming a report by German daily Handelsblatt published on Tuesday.

Deutsche Bank, which has loaned the Trump organization millions of dollars for real estate ventures, said it would not comment on any of its clients.

Deutsche Bank rejected demands in June by U.S. House Democrats to provide details of Trump’s finances, citing privacy laws.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian attempts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election and potential collusion by Trump aides.

Russia has denied meddling in the election and Trump has said there was no collusion.

I don't think that uk campuses have quite got to grips with the far-right in their midst quite yet nor where the line on free speech can or should be drawn, expecially when it comes to social media.

Let me also deliver some silliness right here for good measure (and to go with the gin).

ouais that Dan Rather piece is beautifully written, brought tears to my eyes. Is there a link to it? (Apologies if it's already been posted and I've missed it). Also find it interesting Grassley's assumption in that statement that 'women' are not people but commodities. Pretty typical of attitudes that could lead to the election of someone who brags about sexual assault, or continue to consider electing someone accused of child abuse, of course.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 05/12/2017 12:11

I will gladly accept your Gin (and add some Wine too)

It’s no surprise that they’d deny it although i thought they might’ve tried to go down the “not even going to dignify it with a response” route.

God’s Plan for Mike Pence

Will the vice president—and the religious right—be rewarded for their embrace of Donald Trump?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 05/12/2017 12:23

It is pretty frightening bore. Even looking at a small slice of it eg Moore writing a tract on how women should have no part to play in leadership roles, sexually abusing children and then looking likely to win, and then being endorsed by sexual harasser in chief and embraced by the entire GOP and right wing media who have tried to discredit all victims of sexual abuse with their failed sting setting up WaPo, it’s a pretty bleak picture.

And there’s lots more that’s happening too. It does feel like a war is being waged, and won.

lionheart · 05/12/2017 12:25

The subpoena for Deutsche Bank records related to Trump's accounts is a potentially huge development. Why?

For one thing, Deutsche Bank loaned tens of millions of dollars to Trump at a time when no other bank would touch him. And we don't know why.

Surely just a coincidence that Trump's biggest lender (by FAR) also happens to be implicated in a Russian money-laundering scheme... 👀
