This is a breakdown of the votes by race. It’s very telling...

When I saw that McConnell was going to let strange complete the term til the end of the year, I briefly wondered if it was because he thought jones would win but then decided it was probably more likely that it was to avoid controversy while they focussed on the tax bill.

Regardless of what his motivations were, I’ve never been so glad to have been wrong about Jones’
chances of winning. I can’t believe Alabama is sending a pro-choice, Democrat to the senate!

Dear America,
We will always save your ass, because at the end of the day, we live here and love this country, even if you don’t always love us back.

You’re welcome. And your move.

Pain, I admit I'm shaking a few tail feathers right about now.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/12/2017 04:17

I bet WH staff is running around like mad trying to hide Scrotus' phone.

Wonder if Moore is going to make a concession speech. Bet it's a doozy!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2017 04:18

Rightly so, across! Shake away my friend, shake away Glitterball

Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!

AcrossthePond55 · 13/12/2017 04:26

There is no f'ing way that Scrotus wrote that tweet. No way. No how.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2017 04:28

Ha, I didn’t see your last post about him tweeting! Yep there’s too much dignity in it to be plausible that it’s his own work

clearingaspaceforthecat · 13/12/2017 04:33

Moore refusing to concede.

OuaisMaisBon · 13/12/2017 04:35

Moore is a shit of the first water, and that just goes to prove it, clearing.

FFS they’re demanding a recount! Bad losers...

AL law requires mandatory recount if margin is within .5%. But Jones' victory, as of now, is 3 times larger than that, as @jaketapper just noted.

Alabama secretary of state John Merrill on CNN just now: "Any candidate can request a recount, and if they pay for it, there's a recount."

OuaisMaisBon · 13/12/2017 04:46

Apparently, Moore doesn't understand what 20,000 write-ins mean.

Saffronwblue · 13/12/2017 04:47

Oh this is a good result. Well done Alabama!

Worrying the amount of tweets suggesting Black Alabamans need to watch out for white supremacist backlash tonight Sad

OuaisMaisBon · 13/12/2017 05:14

Dan Rather, eloquent as ever:
“An earthquake has shook the nation and out of the land of the Crimson Tide comes a wave of Blue.

We will likely find out it was powered by women, minorities, and the young. Yes it was a perfect storm, with allegations against Roy Moore of child molestation. Yes, there are a lot of caveats. And yes the Democrats had a strong candidate in Doug Jones.

But let's repeat. A year after Alabama gave their vote to President Donald Trump by nearly 30 percentage points, they have elected a Democrat to the United States Senate. If you had suggested such a development a few months ago, you would have been accused of smoking something pretty expensive.

As long as we have free elections, this country has a chance. As long as the tide of decency swells in our electorate, we have a chance. As long as people organize, and people believe, this country has a chance.

Steady, I have cautioned. Steady, is a chapter in my book. Steady is the word of the day. The great pendulum of our nation is maybe swinging its way back to normalcy.

I have been thinking that the last time I felt this way on a day to day basis might very well have been when I was a child following the daily desperate news reports on the momentous battles of the Second World War. There was a deep sense that the fate of the world hung in the balance and there were tides of optimism and despair.

But after early defeats and dark days, the great tide swung towards freedom. There were pitched battles ahead back then, but liberty emerged victorious. There is that feeling once again tonight.”

TheClaws · 13/12/2017 05:21

Are write-ins postal votes? I’m guessing here from context. So pleased with this news!

TheClaws · 13/12/2017 05:25

Never mind, I worked it out Smile I can see why Trump and Moore might be using that excuse.

OuaisMaisBon · 13/12/2017 05:27

No, write-ins are when you don't vote for anyone printed on the ballot paper, but write in the name of someone else, as I believe the Republican Senator Richard Shelby said he did.
