Alexandra Burke should move to America for her own sanity

Now that her mum is no longer with her, which was the reason she never left. I just hope she finds people who will love her talent and appreciate it. It's being wasted and she will never get to her full potential. It's sad to watch and I don't think AIBU at all for thinking this.

Christ some people can be right nasty arseholes

PavlovianLunge · 10/12/2017 13:23

I like her and think she's damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.
Self-deprecating/modest? Then she's labelled Humblebrag.
Jubilant/strong confident role model? Then she's labelled Arrogant.
In grief over her recently departed mum? Then she's labelled Faking It/Milking it.
Poor woman cannot win.

PavlovianLunge · 10/12/2017 13:24

Ugh, bold fail.

Anyway, totally agree with the pp who said this.

areyoubeingserviced · 10/12/2017 13:29

Another change- thanks for the article link. It was well written and spot on. I would urge others to read it

Bubblebubblepop · 10/12/2017 13:31

I think the hate is racism too

youarenotkiddingme · 10/12/2017 13:40

It’s interesting because when she did X factor I remember SC saying the audience needed to know she was one of the nicest people offset and backstage.

I often wonder if this is fake information to counteract a persona that will come out of the audience isn’t manipulated?

I don’t watch strictly but saw a few of her earlier dances - loved her Tina!

She is an amazing singer though and can dance so I often wonder why she didn’t make it really big?

anotherchange111 · 10/12/2017 14:30

Glad you liked it areyoubeingserviced Smile

I thought it was a really well written piece. Absolutely spot on

buttercupmeadow · 10/12/2017 14:34

I don't think racism comes into it. We all either love or hate certain celebs. I've yet to read about anyone for instance who doesn't like Tina Turner, everyone seems to love her. On the other hand Lulu, Cilla Black, Adele seem to get loads of negative comments. Can't blame racism there.....Hmm We should be able to dislike a celeb and not get accused of being racist if they happen to be of a different race.

anotherchange111 · 10/12/2017 14:39

Have a read of that article buttercup - it may challenge your view

And fwiw - I don't think it's just racism. It's also because she's young and a woman

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 10/12/2017 14:39

I'm sure racism does come into it for some of the people who don't like her. But to say it's the only reason someone could not like her is silly.

SuperPug · 10/12/2017 14:40

Don't know her personally, obviously. When she was on the X Factor, she spent half a day in our local shopping centre, with her mum, speaking to people. Seemed really nice.
Also saw her last year in a show - she was incredible. Always thought that her fame should match her talent tbh.
Seems to be a lot of bad press about her wanting to win. I think that generally, viewers expect a fake, self deprecating approach.

buttercupmeadow · 10/12/2017 14:56

anotherchange but there's loads of successful young women in show business, and black/mixed race too?

quencher · 10/12/2017 17:19

Why didn't she want to travel? I can see how it seems reasonable to expect an artist to do travel to promote an album outside their own country, unless they have young kids or something similar. From when she was in the X factor, her mum was already sick if my memory serves me right. That was a problem then with the first album because they thought she would be the next Leona Lewis who was taken to America to meet Clive Davis. Everyone from then on had to know who she was and did all the photo ops.

I also know that people did mention the hate she got on the X factor back stage. I do remember her being at logger heads with L.walsh because he really wanted jls to win. Even afterwards he still thought the boys were robbed of their chance at winning and he never said anything nice about her.

If this was a dance competition then Alexandra should clearly win as I think she is the best dancer.
However Strictly is an entertainment programme that just happens to be about dance. I think this means that people like a story, to see the performers improve. Or alternatively they have something else, the comedy factor like Ed Ball/John Sargeant or a budding romance with one of the pros.
Its not much of a story, dancer goes in does really well each week and wins is it? Perhaps she should have had a bad week earlier on, not just say 'oh this is so difficult' then pull a stunning performance out of the bag,

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 10/12/2017 17:37

Poor woman can’t win.

Both Joe and Davood gave all that “such a privilege” spiel yet mind of them have been vilified.

Jay had had years of dance training. Yet that didn’t stop him winning it.

Ore was famous for his crying. Also went on to win it.

Hmmm I wonder what they had that she didn’t ..?

Penises perhaps.

DopeyDazy · 10/12/2017 17:50

it's not compulsory to like her to prove you're not racist otherwise Robert Mugabe would be popular. Can't stand her and hope she's out and Debbie wins.

Sweetpea55 · 10/12/2017 17:57

She's a great dancer........ And that's all

Sweetpea55 · 10/12/2017 17:58

Debbie to win!

buttercupmeadow · 10/12/2017 18:05

Rita I think you might be over thinking it. Personally, i don't dislike her, but if people do, you can't say "well so and so did that and so and so said that and they weren't vilified", there's loads of reasons why people don't always warm to people, i don't think it can always be defined.

Maybe it was her whole persona, but really, you can't make people like someone, and there's no point in saying it's because of this or that, but so and so does that and they aren't disliked. I tend to worry over whether I am disliked, let Alexandra do her own worrying itms.
It's not our worry. Xmas Smile

quencher · 10/12/2017 20:41

It’s interesting because when she did X factor I remember SC saying the audience needed to know she was one of the nicest people offset and backstage. They say the same thing every year about a contestant. This year was the french dude. They made sure everyone knew how nice they were.

I've not read any so social media about her until this thread, nor followed her previous career. I like her in strictly and was pleased for her tonight.

It's interesting though that other factors seem to influence some people think about contestants in a dance show.

anotherchange111 · 10/12/2017 21:54

Like who buttercup? British black female big stars? Leona Lewis did well but as you read in that article she was/is quiet and humble

buttercupmeadow · 10/12/2017 21:57

I'm amazed we don't see that much of Leona, she's got one of the best voices i've ever heard.

ticketytock1 · 10/12/2017 21:57

@HangryHanderson what did dan wonton do when George Michael died?
*misses the point of the thread

fascicle · 10/12/2017 21:58

buttercup

Big difference between not warming to someone and vilifying them, especially when people do the latter, without any credible basis. As Ifyousee indicates above, others have said/expressed themselves similarly without attracting the vitriol. And despite all the criticism, I'd say Alexandra has not altered her behaviour - she seems to be consistent each week. No reason to believe she is not being herself.
