Alexandra Burke should move to America for her own sanity

Now that her mum is no longer with her, which was the reason she never left. I just hope she finds people who will love her talent and appreciate it. It's being wasted and she will never get to her full potential. It's sad to watch and I don't think AIBU at all for thinking this.

It is misogynoir. Moving to America will not solve it.

JaneEyre70 · 05/12/2017 10:07

Anyone remember Denise Van Outen on Strictly? Had performed in the West End too, and the public just didn't get behind her..... she was a gorgeous dancer but the public love the underdog. She was the Judges favourite but was in the bottom two on a regular basis, if I remember.

I think Alexandra has a gorgeous voice, and is a lovely dancer too but she's just a bit too much in front of the cameras. I personally think it's a bit of desperation for the attention after her singing career kind of tanked, but the hate she's getting from the DM is horrid.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/12/2017 10:11

Why America? Confused

Zoomaa · 05/12/2017 10:14

How has her career tanked?

She was doing musical theatre in the west end for the two years preceding Strictly, and before that was recording and touring.

Some weirdly over invested people on this thread! Strictly is a perfectly watchable show but who gives a shit what goes on behind the scenes?!

Xtrabroken · 05/12/2017 10:15

I think she's a good dancer with a good voice but I don't think she has 'all that talent going to waste' to be honest.

She would never make it in America.

I used to know people in the 'business' who really didn't like her.

I think strictly need to go one way or the other though for me.

Having some dancers who have danced pro and had dance schools or like Alexander been trained by Craig for a musical pre Strictly and seeing it they can learn a new style or take celebs who have all never danced.
There will still be people who click better than others but for me strictly should be about who makes the most progress from scratch and it's not when some are already dancers.

I'm a regular on Strictly threads, and I used to be on X Factor threads too.

Alexandra Burke gets no more 'abuse' on those threads than anyone else. The nature of the threads is to take the piss, particularly when insincerity and game-playing seems evident.

She's bloody annoying. Great dancer, good singer. I voted for her back in the day on X Factor. Haven't voted for anyone on Strictly this year - I'm just not that invested.

But she's bloody annoying. As was Richard Coles. Mollie is boring. Brendan Cole is an arrogant prick. Etc etc.

It's just the nature of these programmes, isn't it?

bibliomania · 05/12/2017 10:25

I think her grief for her mother is genuine. I am a bit annoyed by the breathy "Thank you for all your kindness to little ol' me!" but I found Pixie Lott even worse in this regard back when she was on Strictly.

It's partly to do with how women are socialised to be, magnified by the expectations on contestants on these kind of shows. It's fake and off-putting, but I don't think it reflects on her personally so much on competing social expectations "Be authentic! But your authenticity must be presented in this way!"

I may be over-thinking it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/12/2017 10:29

I’m not sure whether she’s fake or not as I don’t know her. Imo I think she’s probably trying to come across as thankful and sincere because there’s been some negative stuff in the press written about her. I think it’s just probably her personality too. I don’t think her tears are fake regarding her mum! Poor woman only lost her very recently, when Craig told her to dance for her mum in the DO that comment even made me gulp.

Allthebestnamesareused · 05/12/2017 10:30

She won X Factor by doing the poor me act (as mentioned by a PP above about how she had been thrown out etc by her mother she now grieves for) and thinks she needs to use the same tactics. I have no doubt that of course she grieves for her mother who was a massive part of her life. However I think she is playing on it as a vote winner. Any of the "dancers" who appear usually get stick because they are trained.

In Alexandra's case she is choreographed by Craig himself so there is no wonder that it smacks of favouritism. Although she may not have done ballroom she has danced as part of her singing act. in The Bodyguard and Sister Act!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/12/2017 10:32

She’s choreographed by Craig? I didn’t know that, I presumed the pro dancers did all their choreography?

Humpsfor20yards · 05/12/2017 10:36

I doubt she has been getting abused on mn threads. I think she's not had a great press in 'The Sun' and certainly on Twitter, she's not loved.

AbsentmindedWoman · 05/12/2017 10:37

I don't have any strong opinion on Alexandra Burke either way.

But I lost my mother 7 years ago, and I still cry for her. Not all the time but regularly. Realising she will never meet any children I have always makes me sad.

I really miss her. When something good or interesting is happening and I just wish I could tell her. Both for me, and because I know she'd have been excited/ thrilled/ agog with interest. depending on what's happened.

Backing out of thread now as I'm actually tearful myself now. But no matter how nice or annoying Alexandra Burke might otherwise be, I'm sure her grief is real.

tinytemper66 · 05/12/2017 10:42

I know who Alexandra Burke is but who is Dan Wooten?

Tinklikescoffee · 05/12/2017 10:42

I've seen Alexandra Burke perform in The Bodyguard and been lucky enough to meet her. British people should be proud of her and all that she does, I do not understand 'the haters' either! She has more talent in her little finger than most of the current TV favourites doing the rounds, including some of the very highly paid presenters who are on everything. We should celebrate her achievements and not mock someone who is so obviously suffering loss after such a huge life event Shock Good luck Alexandra Glitterball

Clawdy · 05/12/2017 10:46

Her biggest problem is the judges' fawning praise for her, week after week. It's really irritating people now.

derxa · 05/12/2017 10:49

Dan Wooten? He's an irritating twat. He is the showbiz person on Lorraine. He's even more irritating than Richard Arnold.

Auburn2001 · 05/12/2017 10:51

The MN threads focus more on the dancing itself.

FB and Twitter seem to attract outraged people who talk about Alex and Debbie as if they are toxic relatives who have been personally upsetting them for years on end.

I watch Strictly because it is enjoyable and a bit of a break from all the awful things happening at the moment. But it doesn't feel as enjoyable to watch now after reading so much personal abuse.

I didn't realise Allthebestnamesareused that Alex and Gorka's Strictly dances are personally choreographed by Craig. How did you come to know this?

Carolwithane · 05/12/2017 10:52

My ideal Stricly scenario is Alexandra and Debbie in the dance off. One of them gets voted out and the other spontaneously combusts

They can decide amongst themselves who does what..........

berliozwooler · 05/12/2017 10:53

She probably just went on SCD to stop people thinking she is Leona Lewis.

Also see Brian Connolly - though I'm not sure that he was on the show long enough for people to now be able to distinguish him from Bradley Walsh.

TimFromRuislip · 05/12/2017 10:57

Auburn I might be wrong, but I think they meant Alexandra has been choreographed by Craig in the past, for one of the musicals, not for SCD.

Auburn2001 · 05/12/2017 11:00

Ah thanks TimFromRuislip for clarifying.

Jengnr · 05/12/2017 11:27

Carolwithane :D

Ceto · 05/12/2017 11:31

People used to get pretty unpleasant about Denise van Outen when she was on, so it's not restricted to AB. I was totally neutral about her, but I do find her constant "I'm really struggling" and "What, little me?" act rather irritating. But it must be quite depressing to keep working her socks off knowing that she can't win because the final result is dependent on the public vote which she clearly isn't getting.
