To hate Christmas jumpers and pyjamas

They weren't a thing when I was growing up, so no warm fuzzy memories attached to them. I look at them and all I see is the worst of disposable fashion made for pennies in Bangladeshi sweatshops. FFS, clothes specifically designed to be worn once as a joke? No wonder the world is goung to hell in a handcart.

It’s odd. Adults wandering about in festive woollens. At work. Often in a professional capacity.

Bah humbug me all you like!

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 02/12/2017 20:15

The grinch pjs me and my kids have are on their second Year and are worn throughout December same with the Christmas t shirts I get them- buy bigger sizes to make them last longer and pass them on to other people when mine have grown out of them. I’m sure I’m not the only person who does that. Definitely not a waste here!

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2017 20:15

Add some flashing brussel sprout earrings and Christmas tree glasses to complete the professional look?

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 02/12/2017 20:15

Worn once? Tell that to my FIL, he's had his Christmas jumper since before DP was born (at least 30 years) and he wears it on and off all year round 😂 A fetching snowflake printed woolly! He's quite mad but genuinely fabulous!

Rheged · 02/12/2017 20:16

I’ve never bought a new Christmas jumper. The DCs and I have one each and I pick them up in charity shops (usually in summer) for no more than £2 each. They are nice and warm and the DCs enjoy wearing them. I couldn’t justify a new one though. I saw a nice one in a shop today but it was £26.99! No way would I pay that. The one I bought in a charity shop in 2014 is still going strong.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2017 20:17

I quite like this one TBF.

DS2 needed new pjs in October. He chose elf ones and has worn them every week since and will carry on wearing them until they're too small. Like any other pjs

TheOriginalNNB · 02/12/2017 20:25

I think PJs are different.

You don’t wear them in public, basically.

Thymeout · 02/12/2017 20:26

I needed some winter pjs. Got a lovely pair from M&S - but they've got a tinsel thread running through. Is that so they could be sold as Xmas wear? Honestly, they'd look better without. Tartan and glitter just don't go together.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 02/12/2017 20:27

Totally agree. I volunteer in a charity shop and the amount of "novelty" Christmas clothing which comes our way every January is shocking. Onesies, hats, jumpers, socks, pants, pyjamas, bedding, ties.... Most of it extremely poor quality and fit only for the bin.

We have one Christmas jumper in the house which DS needed for a Christmas show. Bought in the charity shop, will go back there afterwards. DD has pyjamas with polar bears on but they are more "winter" than Christmas.

I am not getting sucked into the consumerist nonsense.

poooooooop · 02/12/2017 20:29

The whole of Christmas and it's consumer ways is fucking disgrace.

Tootiedee · 02/12/2017 20:32

@sparling and @kpo58 why does there need to be a point? Don't you ever buy something nice that makes you happy but is a bit pointless? No ornaments, jewellery etc!?

I love my Christmas jumper and my Christmas bedding and my Christmas towels, plates, cups etc so meh! Grin

GoGoGazelle · 02/12/2017 20:32

YANBU, OP.
I just don't get it.

TheOriginalNNB · 02/12/2017 20:33

Pjs are ok - they’re worn in bed and for slobbing around the house

Jumpers in public - at work? - no!

I refuse to administer medication/give bad news/manage stress whilst wearing a rudolf the reindeer sweater

TangledInTinsel · 02/12/2017 20:34

DD wears her Christmas t-shirt all year round. DS only ever wears a jumper in the winter months so his is seasonal by accident. I do tend to buy generic winter themes (snowman, penguin, reindeer) rather than Santa-esque ones on the basis that they will get more wear out of them.

Sallystyle · 02/12/2017 20:34

I had to get one for my two girls. They need to wear one for their Xmas school lunch, for their school Xmas play and for an Xmas jumper day.

I couldn't find any in primark that fit them and ended up paying £38 for two.

Bloody school and bloody Xmas jumper shit.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2017 20:35

I have got plenty of pointless tat in my house without having the same stuff but festive themed as well Tootiedee.

TheOriginalNNB · 02/12/2017 20:36

Blatant rip off

RedSkyAtNight · 02/12/2017 20:37

SIL buys her children a jumper for Christmas jumper day every year. They wear the jumper, donate a £1 for charity. They never wear the jumper on any other occasion and have grown out of it by the following year.

This does my head in.

Ekphrasis · 02/12/2017 20:38

Yes. It's awful. The worst sort of unsustainable, disposable commerce :-(

Agree. Bloody can’t stand the Xmas jumper day at school. Apart from the unsustainable acrylic and pressure to fork out for a quite unnecessary thing at school, the kids all over heat and have meltdowns. (Teacher talking.) I don’t think the charity aspect especially balances out the consumption aspect.

Enwi · 02/12/2017 20:39

I have a christmas jumper my best friend bought me for my birthday (just before christmas) in highschool. I still get it out every single year mid-November, and wear it very frequently until the end of December. If anything, it has been worn more than most of my other clothes, and is certainly a lot older.

HoneyDragon · 02/12/2017 20:42

The whole of Christmas and it's consumer ways is fucking disgrace

As a manufacturer I completely agree, can everyone please stop buying stuff? I’m discusted and appaulled at you all.

CharisMama · 02/12/2017 20:43

I'm wearing one now, it's so warm! I love my son's as well, minecraft santa!

Tootiedee · 02/12/2017 20:46

All my festive stuff goes up in the loft with the Christmas decorations and comes down ready for December. The everyday stuff goes up in its place.

It's not like people buy festive items and throw them out and replace them each year so I think it's a total non issue.
