To ask what song makes you cry

For no reason.

Mine is Wings by Little Mix and I don’t really know why. I’m not even a fan of them, although they’re very cute. I’ve just listened to to the song and the tears are flowing. My DP is Hmm.
The other is God Only Knows but I understand why that would make me cry.

Anyway. what songs are guaranteed to make you have good cry.

Oh and white wine in the sun by Tim Minchin

mummyretired · 02/12/2017 22:29

Electric Dreams - Human League. Every time.

My employers used it as their conference theme one year and it was very difficult for me.

BachAtTheMoon · 02/12/2017 22:29

Don't Give Up. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. This is like my husband talking to me. It describes his situation perfectly.

This Woman's Work. Greg Laswell Cover. I heard this on the Vampire diaries, never heard it before so only heard the chorus and howled. Was going through a very stressful time and it just resonated!

Heaven holds the ones I love by Nita whitaker. Just beautiful, yet so so sad

TossDaily · 02/12/2017 22:31

A Minor Incident by Badly Drawn Boy.
The Drugs Don't Work by Verve.
In The Ghetto by Elvis Presley.
The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell.
Vincent by Don McLean.
Here You Come Again by Dolly Parton. No idea why.
Father and Daughter by Paul Simon.
That'll Do by Peter Gabriel.

IglooThePenguin · 02/12/2017 22:33

I can't make you love me - George Michael
From this moment - Shania Twain
I knew I loved you before I met you - Savage Garden
Nimrod - Elgar

supafish · 02/12/2017 22:34

I'll stand by you - The pretenders
Played to me in the car by my husband after a distressing therapeutic abortion . Still makes me cry 20 years later x

toomuchtooold · 02/12/2017 22:36

Bright Eyes from Watership Down. Still. Nearly 40 fucking years since I first saw the film. Now I have a 5yo who is so bad with loss that she had trouble to throw some bread in the bin that we baked, that film is BANNED in our house Grin

Also Tote Hosen - Tage Wie Diese. I don't know why exactly. It sounds a bit like Heroes and a bit like something from late 80s U2.

happyfrown · 02/12/2017 22:38

for no reason: wind beneath my wings makes me cry every time, I don't know why. when I hear it I think of my dad but it has no connection?

for a reason: arms of an angel by sarah McLachlan because I relate to it.

MartysHere · 02/12/2017 22:38

Bridge over Troubled Water. My dad used to play it when he was so depressed that all he did was sit on a wooden chair abd smoke. I was three and it brings back awful memories I didn't know were there.

NerrSnerr · 02/12/2017 22:39

As a child my mum used to play Mary Hamilton by Joan Baez. It used to break me ‘she put him in a tiny boat and cast him out to sea, he might sink or he might swim but he’ll never come back to me’

As an adult Lisa Hannigan’s version of Silent Night, Don’t look back in anger and Jack Johnson’s Do You Remember Do it for me.

toomuchtooold · 02/12/2017 22:39

And Silent All These Years by Tori Amos, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - original Judy Garland version, the one that says "someday soon we all will be together" - really poignant, totally lost in the rewritten version that goes "from now on we all will be together".

mamaduckbone · 02/12/2017 22:40

The Smaetest Giant in Town from a Julia Donaldson CD because DS1 sang it to my lovely dad the last time we were in the car with him before he died. I remember ddad saying how well ds knew the words (he was only 2 1/2)

Ssssurvey · 02/12/2017 22:43

Small Bump - Ed Sheeran

PyrexDishes · 02/12/2017 22:46

Love theme by Andre Rieu. Sad

Woody67 · 02/12/2017 22:50

And "We'll meet again" by Vera Lynn. It makes me think of all those young men who never came home.

StewPots · 02/12/2017 22:50

So many. Usually it's Fix You by Coldplay, Careless Whisper by George Michael.

For ages now it's been Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran. Reminds me of times gone by with my mates and how much I miss those times, and now we are grown up with DC we don't see each other as much. I sing along in a broken voice and when he sings the line "these people raised me" I'm totally done.

Thanksto all those who associate certain music with losses.

Mulch · 02/12/2017 22:52

After laughter Wendy renee discovered it as a soundtrack on this is England

toomuchtooold · 02/12/2017 22:59

I've just gone back and read the thread. So, so sorry for all the people on here who've suffered loss.

To build a home- cinematic orchestra

Costcoqueen · 02/12/2017 23:07

In the ghetto by Elvis and Fast Cars - Tracy Chapman. Also many that have already been mentioned...

affectionincoldclimate · 02/12/2017 23:09

@Bananamanfan OMG. Yes thrice over. Bloody love that song. Thank you for reminding me

TheMathsTrainee · 02/12/2017 23:10

My boy

Elvis Presley
😭

TheNoodlesIncident · 02/12/2017 23:12

Blue October - Hate Me.

God the pain and anguish...

thecakefairy · 02/12/2017 23:13

Fairytale of New York. I always think of Kirsty McColl as she was a favourite and it's a lasting tribute to her.

Don't let the sun go down on me. The version where George Michael sings but introduces Elton John part way through.

You'll be in my heart by Phil Collins from the Tarzan soundtrack.
