To make a bottle this way or will I poison the baby?

DD 12m still has one feed at 4am. I usually just get the premixed bottles and dump it straight in. Ocado decided to cancel my order today and I'm out sooo...

Can I stick 4oz of boiling water in a thermos, 4 oz of cold water in a water bottle and combine it all together (hot first) and mix? I just can't see DD waiting for me to cool a bottle down in the middle of the night if I use all hot. DH firmly convinced I'll poison her. Who is right?

It's fine. As long as the water you add to the powder is over 70 degrees and you top up with the right amount of cold, it's perfectly okay.

Mix it with the hot water first to kill the bacteria in the milk powder and wait a couple of minutes before adding the cold water.

I used to do that, although I added the powder to the hot and mixed before adding the cold.

Cows milk! She's 12 months, so forget all this crap and give her some slightly warmed cows milk x

Oh god I stick a bottle in with ds 16months (yup, still on them at night 🙄)
I make it up with cool boiled water now (sometimes a bit warm, straight from kettle) shake and pop in cot when I go to bed. Dunno when but he drinks it before morning.
But I was always a bit lax with this stuff. I mean, hygiene yeah, but used room temp premix bottles for ages. He's fine.

That’s fine. Tho I would use 2/3oz boiling and 5/6 cold. Not half and half as will be too hot

I make bottles like that and find 1/3 works well with temp

Or give them cows milk as over a year

I would ditch the fomula such a hassle failing that make a bottle before bed and stuck it in the microwave for 30 seconds during the night.

I honestly think there is slight hysteria building around making up bottles.

I used to keep room temp water in a bottle and dump the formula in when needed. At 12 months they could have that, or cold cows milk, or they could lump it. I'm a hardfaced cow, I know They are all taller than me now.

Yes that sounds fine. But why don't you give her cow's milk since she's 1, or near as darnit?

She's fine on cows milk at 12 months. She should be taking vitamins as well.

If you still want to use powder, make it up before hand with off-boil water and leave it in the fridge for up to 12 hrs. The main (but very unlikely) risk from powder is listeria - the boiling water will prevent that. Not making it fresh is not advised with newborns but it's fine for a 12mo.

That’s how I make all of DD (10 months) bottles sort of, since she turned 6 months.

Boil kettle, fill bottle half way with hot (I cheat as I have a kettle that heats it to 70 rather than boiling it) add powder, swirl, top up with cold tap water swirl again, feed child.

I agree with a PP though, perhaps tonight is the night to make the swap to cows milk/ water and try and get rid of the 4 am bottle for good!

That's common, but it's the worst of all worlds. Please nobody do this- children have died from doing this (though it is very unlikely). The point of boiling the water is to kill any bacteria in the milk powder. Far better to make it up in advance and leave it in the fridge, if you can't be arsed to just make it fresh.

Do 12m olds die from room temperature bottles? Is it not just newborn s? I mean by that time mine had managed to chew the wheels of the buggy once or twice and somehow survived.

Don't worry about it OP. By 12 months their constitutions are a lot tougher than they were at newborn.

My HV advised this methods for newborns so I imagine a 12m old will be just fine

This is absolutely fine; as long as water over 70degrees hits the powder and is well shaken before adding cold, you should kill any bacteria

Thanks for the replies. I imagine listeria would be pretty nasty even in a 1 year old so will use the hot water first to kill Amy lurking bugs. We have a long history of all sorts of cmpi/lactose intolerances. My son was ebf for six months then combi fed to 12. When we tried cows milk he just didn't tolerate it well. Still at six he can't drink it without getting the runs. Paediatrician said it's harder to digest than formula as it's far less broken down. Plus cows milk means definitely have to haul downstairs to get out of the fridge which I don't much fancy at 4am. The middle of the night won't be my moment to give cows milk a go.

Yeah cows milk, waste of money using formula at that age.

I used to make up a bottle before bed and stick it in the fridge then use a bottle warmer to heat it uo in the night. I got a perfect prep machine at about 10 months and wondered hoe i had ever lived eithout it

Also my ds wouldnt even entertain the thought of cows milk at first. I couldnt get him to switch until he was about 15 months, so not necessarily a quick fix for op
