Anyone else a massive fan and still gutted that he's gone? He's the only "celeb" I've ever been truly emotional about when he died 😞

He's not bad here.

He was hot!!!!

MissMustBeAMug · 02/12/2017 18:43

I was absolutely determined to marry Rik through most of my childhood.

Sad
Storminateapot · 02/12/2017 18:46

I cried when he died and I'm not prone to that kind of thing as a rule. He is a big loss to comedy.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/12/2017 18:55

When I was a teenager I worked in a theatre where he did stand up quite often. He was really nice & not at all a ’showbiz pain in the arse’ as many ‘lesser’ stars were. He was naturally warm & funny. I didn’t fancy him at all, but he was definitely more attractive in real life. Definitely a great loss. I’d love to have seen him make old bones entertaining us all.

I often drive round the Hammersmith roundabout - there's a bench there where people leave flowers and posters and other things in his memory. I was not a fan so am not sure but I think he filmed a famous "bottom" scene there or similar.

YADNBU. I agree that he was the funniest guy who ever lived. And like you, I actually really felt upset when he died, whereas whenever I've heard of other celebrities I liked dying, it's never resulted in more than an "Oh, that's a shame. Their poor families" kind of feeling...

Ah - opening credits apparently!

Helendee · 02/12/2017 19:06

Not funny at all to me but I was sad to hear that he had died.

StealthPolarBear · 02/12/2017 19:12

It's the bench they're sitting on at the beginning in the opening music

Just dug this thread up because I only read half of it when it started the other day.

Loved Rik. When he died, I thought "Oh no, I'll never meet him now" which was odd as I had never attempted to meet him, and could probably have done so had I tried. Felt so sad.

Firesuit you said that that despite liking Rik, you didn't like Flash, I wonder whether it's because (as a one-time foreigner) you weren't in the UK in the 80s and missed the ghastly stereotype of the rich yuppy who was [he claimed] shagging everything in sight, hugely over confident, wildly over-exaggerating his sexual prowess, success, income, you name it. There were a lot of 'em about; Richard Curtis and Ben Elton being quieter sorts of chap probably detested guys like this and satirised them in Flash.

BalloonSlayer · 03/12/2017 09:39

Every time anyone mentions Elephant and Castle I involuntarily respond "stick it up your arsehole"

Me Too MrLovebucket.

That's my favourite line. My second favourite is "I wish I hadn't shat my pants"

Ontheboardwalk · 03/12/2017 09:52

I loved Alan B’stard!

I also loved seeing Rik and Ade in Waiting for Godot it was fantastic seeing them both stripped right back

starskey80 · 03/12/2017 12:39

Oh I loved Rik, so funny. I fell in love with him as a child watching drop dead Fred. And he was definitely hot, he uglified himself for comedy, but he was a fine looking man. Loved bottom. I'm sure Ade must miss him terribly

StealthPolarBear · 10/12/2017 10:15

Anyone else having vodka margarine on their Christmas pudding?

Grin
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/12/2017 10:20

I couldn’t stand him. Not remotely funny and completely ruined Blackadder.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 10/12/2017 10:28

Reykjavik comma Iceland full stop is a catch phrase often used in this house when my husband is being pernickety Grin

Sidge · 10/12/2017 10:58

I grew up with The Young Ones, Kevin Turvey, Blackadder, Bottom et al and LOVED Rik Mayall.

Yes much of his humour was puerile and childish and overacted (ie Flasheart) but that was the point, the comedy reflected the demand of the time.

I saw Bottom Live and absolutely cried laughing, especially when Rik and Ade ad libbed and messed up their lines. The comedic chemistry between them was amazing, they just lit each other up.

Best comedian ever? No, but very funny, very talented and sadly missed? Yes.
