Anyone else a massive fan and still gutted that he's gone? He's the only "celeb" I've ever been truly emotional about when he died 😞

Yes, I absolutely loved him and was really genuinely sad when he died, and still am.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/12/2017 18:39

YANBU he was wonderful - I loved most things he did and he was superb in Man Down

I am old so remember The Dangerous Brothers, Comic Strip etc as well

Every Christmas I open the brandy butter and shout 'Vodka margarine' and fall about laughing while my teenagers roll their eyes Grin

HuskyPup · 01/12/2017 18:43

I thought he was awesome. I loved Bottom Live 1 & 2, even more than the series.

Was so sad when he died.

StealthPolarBear · 01/12/2017 18:44

If dh wants to say something nice about an item of clothing I'm wearing he says "smashing blouse you have on"

karmacoma1 · 01/12/2017 18:46

My mum interviewed him in the 80s for a now defunct magazine. Sounds, I think? She said he was so kind and funny, and paid for the drinks which was unheard of for most of the ‘stars’ they intereviewed.

He did this fantastic video of him telling children’s fairytales- like Rumplestiltskin. I must of watched it a million times. Got to see if I can find a copy for when DD is older. Smile

Gone too soon.

LouPeru · 01/12/2017 18:51

Aww I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. I remember watching Drop Dead Fred as a teenager, I didn't even know who Rik Mayall was at the time but remember developing a massive crush on him through that film. Even now that film has me in tears with laughter - the restaurant scene 😂 Then when I was a bit older it was Bottom - which appealed directly to my sense of humour. I've never seen or heard of a bad side to him. I often call my DH a complete and utter bastard - thankfully, he's also a huge fan and tends to retaliate by tugging his boxer shorts over his belly and swaying from side to side. Even in death Rik Mayall still has us laughing at life. One in a million.

Richard Richard and Edward Elizabeth Hitler Grin

I would watch Bottom on VHS on repeat as a teen.

Me, my Dad and sister loved him

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch · 01/12/2017 19:18

I really liked him - he had the comedic reflexes of a rattlesnake. I was so sad when he died. I can't help wondering what we've missed out on - what other works of genius he would have come up with.

I still think he would have found this newspaper front page announcing his death funny.

I was deeply upset when he died, and I think about him often and miss him. He was my favourite celebrity of all time and no-one else has come close.

thegrinchreaper · 01/12/2017 20:04

Yes!
YANBU

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/12/2017 20:10

No, he wasn't the funniest man ever to me, but what made him very watchable was his love of humour itself, his love of what he was doing and his lovely big, kind heart that came through somehow in the craziness.

billybagpuss · 01/12/2017 20:13

Biggest mistake ever was cutting him from the Harry Potter films, he was cast as Peeves. I wish they'd release some of the footage for comic relief if they have any :(

StealthNinjaMum · 01/12/2017 20:17

DD wanted me to read George's Marvellous Medicine and I couldn't be bothered so I found the Rik Mayall version on youtube. Absolutely hilarious.

Something I didn't know before he died - he made sure French and Saunders were paid the same as their male counterparts.

HelenaDove · 01/12/2017 20:51

Agree OP Rik is one of the funniest ppl who ever lived.

I think the same of Dave Allen too who passed away in 2005 at 68.

RedastheRose · 02/12/2017 00:05

Saw him live as Alan B'stard when he had reinvented himself as new labour he was utterly fabulous on stage alone for large parts of the play. Lisette Anthony played his wife she was great too. I didn't like a lot of his comedy as it was a bit too slapstick but loved him in this.

Loved him.
Made me cry with laughter especially as Flash in Blackadder

OstentatiousWanking · 02/12/2017 00:15

A genius. It's a bit sad to live in a World without Drop Dead Fred.

I never really got him until Man Down to be honest. I remember George’s marvellous medicine and he brought the book to life when I was little but most of his humour apart from Flasheart kind of passed me by. Man Down was a stroke of genius though, I don’t usually like that laddish style of humour but he was great in it. Greg Davies was obviously very fond of him and wrote his character perfectly.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 02/12/2017 00:36

You are most certainly not unreasonable! Absolutely adored Rik Mayall, from Kevin Turvey onwards he stole every scene, even from Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder. Just genius.

I think I can still quote every line from the Young Ones (yes, we've got a video!), but I love this exchange from Bottom

From my newer, therefore shakier, memory.

Richie. We could play pin the tail on the donkey!
Eddie. We haven't got a tail.............or a donkey.
Richie. We could play pin the sausage on the fridge.
Eddie. We haven't got a pin.
Richie. We could play sellotape the sausage to the fridge.
Eddie. We haven't got a sausage.
Richie. We could play put the sellotape on the fridge.
Eddie. ................................................ it's not much of a game is it?

Sadly missed.

HermionesRightHook · 02/12/2017 00:47

The worst thing (of many bad things) about the Harry Potter films was that Rik Mayall was Peeves, but they cut him from it. I can see why, you could film them without Peeves, but still. He would have been the best thing in it.

Here's why he loved the HP films: www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2014/06/never-saw-rik-mayall-harry-potter-movie

lou1221 · 02/12/2017 00:52

Omg Lord Flashheart was the best. Hurrah!

saw him live in a show. He was so brilliant.
