To think that wearing a strappy top does not mean you are half naked?

A colleague today was judging how some women dressed, and had a rant about young women being half naked. When I clarified what she meant, she talked about women wearing strappy tops. I don't consider showing your arms and shoulders as being half naked.

I wouldn't wear one to work. Is that what she meant?

brasty · 29/11/2017 19:24

No would not be allowed in my workplace, she means anywhere in public.

You're quite right, OP, she's well off on her fractions. Check her expenses claim.

PickleSarnie · 29/11/2017 19:25

Depends on the location though. If she's a colleague is she talking about women turning up to an office in a spaghetti strap top? In which case, I'd agree it was inappropriate and under-dressed. If she was, however, including women on the beach in a tiny top being half naked. Then she's being unreasonable.

brasty · 29/11/2017 19:25

Not on the beach, just walking round the streets, etc.

Sorry, typed too slowly. In which case. She's a loon.

DrCoconut · 29/11/2017 19:57

What is the age and cultural background of your colleague?

Albertschair · 29/11/2017 20:01

Does it depend on time of year?

A strappy top in this weather is practically fully naked not half naked.

In summer it would only be half naked out they then forgot to put on any bottoms

brasty · 29/11/2017 20:07

She is older and white.

I'm quite often in strappy tops at this time of year.

I swear really bad so will just put my coat over my top but most of the time it comes off coz I'm sweating. Blush

Ttbb · 29/11/2017 20:15

Only if it's the only thing that you are wearing

WashBasketsAreUs · 29/11/2017 20:31

My mother used to call them 'titty tops!'

MadForlt · 29/11/2017 21:13

She's absolutely right. It someone is only wearing a strappy top, they are quite obviously half naked - its not the shoulders that are the problem ;)

Is she religious at all? A lot of religions have issues with shoulders.

AppleKatie · 29/11/2017 22:40

Ime the strappy top hatred is common amongst a certain type of LMC middle aged+ women.

I know that's an awful stereotype and it is of course only my experience but i have seen it a lot- in women I otherwise have massive amounts of respect for, they come out all puritanical in the face of a spaghetti strap.

CherryGardens11 · 29/11/2017 23:03

I don't understand why a strappy top is ever inappropriate. The only extra stuff that's on show is... Shoulders and arms?

Juicyfruitloop · 29/11/2017 23:58

I think lots of young woman have express themselves with their clothes are lack of them.

When I was 18-23 I was guilty of been half dressed. I shake with the cold thinking of some if my old outfits. Sure even in my mams youth the 60's the skirts were like belts.

She is BU.

picklemepopcorn · 30/11/2017 00:10

I notice that as we get older, looking at scantily dressed people makes us feel cold. We then blame the other person for being improperly dressed!

Mxyzptlk · 30/11/2017 00:16

I have always disliked seeing any amount of uncovered boobs, even a tiny bit of cleavage. Is that what your colleague is objecting to?
I have no problem with strappy tops if the cleavage is out of sight. (I know that makes me odd)

RadioGaGoo · 30/11/2017 05:34

Mxyzptlk, that is odd. Breastfeeding mothers must be positively horrendous for you.

Splinterz · 30/11/2017 05:48

Breastfeeding mothers must be positively horrendous for you

ahh the old irrelevant to the debate BF in public tangent

InspMorse · 30/11/2017 05:55

Breastfeeding mothers must be positively horrendous for you

Eh? WTF have BF mothers got to do with anything?

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 30/11/2017 06:04

I saw a young woman wearing on whilst working in a bakery and I must admit, I thought it wasn't on. Bare armpit potentially dripping on food...no.

Emlou07 · 30/11/2017 06:22

No, a strap top definitely doesn't class as half naked. Although, some cheaper brands like Primark seem to have a lot of their materials as quite see through. Even so!

MaisyPops · 30/11/2017 07:02

Depends how she said it:

  1. I hate seeing women wanting around half naked wearing those revealong strappy tops
  1. It's so cold and some women are wandering around half naked (as in a daft joke about them not wearing winter clothes).

The first is a bit judgey and.

The 2nd is the sort of thing I say quite a bit (also said about men in the north who think a t shirt is perfectly logical in the snow and wind). More a joke about 'are they not cold'
