here

What's that all about then? Why does it warrant its own category?

It’s patronising and offensive to women to call it modest. Bad move M&S!

fuzzywuzzy · 29/11/2017 20:10

Modest being a female thing is odd for me.

Was discussing what attracted us to our partners with a close friend recently and we both agreed modesty was a big thing. We’ve preferred that they were shy.

Modesty is equally expected of men and women

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:11

It's thriving more now

Battleax · 29/11/2017 20:11

Thanks sprog.

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:13

Msharry
Is it more offensive than 'sexy'

fuzzywuzzy · 29/11/2017 20:13

No haram would be something that is forbidden. Clothing isn’t forbidden.

Muslims who wear modest clothing on public could wear whatever in private. The clothing would not be forbidden to wear.

If something’s haram it is forbidden completely in public or private

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 20:13

Modest is not applicable to women only. The clothing range is, that’s my point. It suggests women need to consider modesty and men don’t.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 20:14

Last Muslim wedding I saw the videos of (abroad so segregated) - I can honestly say that the dresses were mostly short, sparkly and would not look out of place on a catwalk. Must women be directed to what they should/can wear - what is 'modest'?

Thank goodness in the UK we can mostly walk out our front door wearing what the hell we want without fearing for our 'modesty'.

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 20:14

‘Sexy’ is applied to both men and women.

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:14

Why it wasn't bothering anyone when a sexy clothing line was introduced, but modest?

Battleax · 29/11/2017 20:15

No haram would be something that is forbidden. Clothing isn’t forbidden.

That's not what I was saying. I only threw "haram" in as the opposite of halal because tiny was messing with my mind. Wasn't saying anything about "haram clothing" even possibly being a thing.

Just still asking really can clothing be halal?

Fekko · 29/11/2017 20:16

My mind is boggling at the thought of m&s sexy menswear!

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:16

Modest is applied to men as well in certain religious groups, know your facts

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/11/2017 20:17

The point is that all of those clothes are available in shops, dresses over leggings, polo necked tops. My problem is that it is solely for women and called 'Modest'

Foul term. Absolutely awful. If I bought my clothes and M&S , which I don't, I would stop doing so.

It has nothing to do with being "professionally offended"(the term always used by those who can't think of what the point is)

Describing women's clothes as "modest" is offensive.

Modest clothing isn’t just for a Muslim market tho. The market would be for any woman who wants a bit more coverage/non skin tight clothing.

So basically just wants a different choice? Why does that require certain clothes to be described as "modest"?

Do you really not understand what is wrong with this?

MsHarry · 29/11/2017 20:17

Not in shops! That’s my point.

Fekko · 29/11/2017 20:18

It is but not usually as vigorously upheld as for women. I've not had any male relatives hassled or threatened for wearing short sleeves let alone (shock horror) allowing a lock of hair to shock polite society and corrupt a nation.

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:18

Halal is permissible, yes clothing, food, relationships, sex comes under halal or haram

Battleax · 29/11/2017 20:19

Thanks stealth. That's what I thought.

fuzzywuzzy · 29/11/2017 20:19

Halal and haram wouldnt be applicable to clothing

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/11/2017 20:21

Remember this: its as offensive to try and force women out of a style or manner of clothing as it is to force them into it

I haven't read the thread but I bet not one person has suggested that. No one is objecting to long dresses or long sleeved blouses being available. What those of us who hate the term "modest clothing" is the offensive distinction between modest and immodest clothes and modest and immodest women.

Battleax · 29/11/2017 20:21

Oh. Okay I think I'll abandon that line of enquiry Grin

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:22

Fekko are you implying people who wear modest clothes do so in 'fear'? It's their choice, what they want to wear.

fuzzywuzzy · 29/11/2017 20:23

Why is immodest offensive?

What marketing word would be better for modest clothing?

Fekko · 29/11/2017 20:23

My family members do - but not here, hence me saying 'in the uk'.

stealthemoon · 29/11/2017 20:24

Why are you judging the person s character from what they are wearing?
It's just a fashion term, 'modest clothing '
