To be surprised that M&S has a section on their website for Modest Clothing?

here

What's that all about then? Why does it warrant its own category?

Because "modest clothing" is a thing and people want it?

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:08

Definition of modest: (of a woman) dressing or behaving so as to avoid impropriety or indecency, especially to avoid attracting sexual attention.

Is this a religious thing?

I wish they wouldn't call it 'modest'. It implies women not swathed from head to toe are immodest.

SnugglySnerd · 29/11/2017 09:09

Because the rest of M&S clothing is so sexy and revealing I assume Grin

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:09

Are other clothes "immodest" then?

OP posts:
TheNoseyProject · 29/11/2017 09:09

I think it’s religious. Mayim bialik on her blog writes about it and she’s orthodox Jewish (Amy in Big Bang)

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:09

"I wish they wouldn't call it 'modest'. It implies women not swathed from head to toe are immodest." exactly

About modest dressing. She doesn’t write aboutm&s!

60sname · 29/11/2017 09:10

It's a fashion trend at the moment: high neck, long sleeves plus long skirt/trousers

EduCated · 29/11/2017 09:11

'Modest' clothing is a thing for people from some religions (e.g. Mormons) - presumably they want to come up on Google when people search for modest clothing. Is it just a curated page of things from elsewhere on their website?

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:11

Well I don't like the name. It implies anything other than this is "immodest"

I thought we spent a lot of time telling girls they could wear what they want?

Interesting article [[https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/fashion/2016/mar/31/if-i-want-to-buy-a-burkini-from-ms-i-bloody-well-will]] in case you were planning on some thinly veiled (geddit?) islamaphobia. :)

There's certainly a religious aspect to it, but tbh as a very non-religious teen I would have jumped at it. The increasing pressure to have your body examined and judged by all and sundry hasn't really decreased for girls since then.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 29/11/2017 09:12

It will be aimed towards the religious. Mainly sales to Muslim women but also some to orthodox Christians or Jews. No problem with that. Just hate the name. They should call it 'covered' or something, not modest. Modest implies horrible things about women who don't dress that way.

CaoNiMa · 29/11/2017 09:12

"I thought we spent a lot of time telling girls they could wear what they want?"

Yes, we did. And who benefited most from it? Men.

BartholinsSister · 29/11/2017 09:12

Is it modestly priced?

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:12

in case you were planning on some thinly veiled (geddit?) islamaphobia

oh don't be stupid. Here we go...

chickenowner · 29/11/2017 09:13

I didn't know that section was there either, but I like it!

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:13

jesus

thank god I was born 50 years ago. Feminism really is dead.

No, Scabbers. It doesn't.

In the same way "cruisewear" doesn't impy all other clothing is for going, like, really fast in. Hmm

As pp said, it's their clothes curated using a search term. Jeez.

60sname · 29/11/2017 09:14

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2017/sep/13/the-great-cover-up-why-were-all-dressing-modestly-now

This one is good on the various influences

Scabbersley · 29/11/2017 09:15

Have you read the definition of modest uterus? Do you know what it means?

It is not the same as cruisewear

OP posts:
morningtoncrescent62 · 29/11/2017 09:16

They should call it 'covered' or something, not modest. Modest implies horrible things about women who don't dress that way.

This. I have absolutely no problem with the section existing but I think it should be re-named.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 29/11/2017 09:16

So Cao, are you supporting the notion that a woman who wears, say, a knee length skirt and a short sleeved blouse on a hot day is inviting men to pay sexual attention to them and therefore 'deserves' any harassment. Because that's what using the term 'modest' for these clothes implies.
