About babies name?

Linzerelli13 · 28/11/2017 18:59

Currently 39+6 with baby #2.
We already have a DD (3). Before we found out she was a girl we wrote a list of names for both boys and girls that we liked and narrowed it down to two for each. When we had it confirmed she was a girl we both picked the same name as our favourite.
When we found out that this baby was a boy, I assumed that we would use one of the top 2 boy names we had picked out for DD. DP has changed his preference though, and one of the names has been used by a family member. Fair enough, I thought, so we set about coming up with new names.
We've really struggled to agree this time around. He really wanted Arthur for a while, which I really don't like. (I mean no offence to anyone who has an Arthur, it's just not for me and and I don't feel that it goes with DD's fairly modern name)
We eventually agreed on Connor for all of 3 weeks and then HE Changed his mind again and we eventually settled on Jackson. We mutually agreed that we like it as there are plenty of nicknames and variations, it goes well with his last name and with DD's name.
I've now purchased personalised blankets, hat's, taggies etc as he was 100% that that's what he was called. DD has been calling my bump Jackson for about 6 weeks now too.
Just tonight, baring in mind its my bloody due date tomorrow, He's gone out for a drink with his brother, and come back DEMANDING that we call the baby Arthur.
He says that Jackson is a stupid name and too American and he wants to call the baby something traditional. Baring in mind he bloody chose it and promised me that he was 100% sure on it.
Now I know that this is his brothers influence. I don't particularly like him, He's an arrogant nobhead who has made remarks in the past that has made me not like him. When I was pregnant with DD, he told DP that 'you want to het rid of it. Variety is the spice of life and you dont want to be tied down to just one woman. Having a baby is a big mistake'. 2 months later his gf was pregnant. He also took the p*ss out of DD's name.
Anyway, when DP has come home after the 6 pints his brother has fed him, He's now adamant that Jackson is a stupid name and he wont be calling our son it. He doesn't even want baby to have his last name if it can't be Arthur.
AIBU? Or is he? And do you agree that his brother is a tw@t? Sorry for the rambling post.

Why buy personalised stuff before the child is born? You'd have been stuffed if Baby was a girl 🤷‍♀️

PinkyBlunder · 28/11/2017 20:45

Well to me (a person that is about to have a second newborn) all newborns look like pink squishy potatoes to me so mine end up nameless for a while.

I think seriously, just let it go OP. He’s bound to change his mind again. If you don’t like Arthur, just refuse and join team nameless for a while Wink

MrsKoala · 28/11/2017 20:45

Grin Breakfast that really made me laugh.

Unnoticed · 28/11/2017 20:48

He’s being a prat, but Arthur really is so much nicer.

Merida83 · 28/11/2017 20:57

So there's many thing that could be said re your husbands behaviour tonight but that's been done.

What I will say is it's very hard living with haven giving your child a name you don't want for them. He may have suggested Jackson and at the time may very well have liked it. But that can change over the weeks then he may have found it hard to bring up how he felt and he may have tjought he could just be content and live with Jackson. It might just be that after 6 pints and being so close to your due date and probably having had honest conversation with his brother he just feels he can't go ahead with it.

But his way of doing it and demanding one name only and the whole bit about surnames is all unacceptable but probably a result if drunkenness.

Have a proper open and honest calm conversation tomorrow.
And please do not let the fact you have told people and fact you have name specific gifts force you into sticking with it. From experience i know that that makes you very unhappy.

Andcake · 28/11/2017 21:01

Leave it until he sobers up.

Dp is unreasonable for changing name and getting drunk

Personalised stuff - tacky
Jackson - too American and a bit tacky ( to whoever said surprised at anti USA sentiment I did a study on this about 5 years ago ...higher levels of education aligned themselves more with Europe, leaving education earlier America?...)

Even if as a couple you decide on a name before birth discussing it with others is just asking for trouble, especially family. So both of you being a bit naive here.

FlashTheSloth · 28/11/2017 21:05

Jackson is a sirname. Which is irrelevant to your OP so I'd say YANBU. I'd refuse to change it tbh. He was all set for the name he suggested until tonight. I'd go with "great, Jackson MySirname it is then" like pps have said.

MyKingdomForBrie · 28/11/2017 21:05

He’s a twat for the surname comment.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 28/11/2017 21:28

Arthur sounds like an old man's name to me, (actually my grandfather's name) but that's not the point, or what anyone else here thinks about it. Just call his bluff and say 'Ok, Jackson Mysurname it is.' If you're not married, you hold the cards and can choose the first name and the surname. Your have a few weeks to register the birth/name in any case. Don't be bullied into a name you don't like, especially as you suspect his brother is shit stirring.

SunshineTheMonkey · 28/11/2017 21:40

Jackson? After that disgusting man Michael?

Wow.

Arthur is much better and you don't get the allegations connotation.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/11/2017 21:44

Meh. He’s entitled to not like a name. You’re entitled to like it. Neither of you are entitled to ignore the other.

For what it’s worth, of the two names I think Arthur is much preferable.

Linzerelli13 · 28/11/2017 21:59

For what it's worth hes just come downstairs, made a cup of tea and apologised. He does like Jackson and is fine with us going ahead with it. His brother took the p*ss out of it earlier, just like he did with DD's name when i was pregnant (her name is Brooke for whoever asked).
I've said that We can have Arthur as a middle name if he really wants it but hes not actually that bothered!
Do men get all crazy hormonal and irrational before birth like women do? Or was it just the beer? Grin
For what its worth, it's not after Michael Jackson, I liked the name after watching some of anarchy and he likes the name from a Johnny Cash song.
The jagthon comment made me laugh so hard I almost peed, which in my current condition I'm surprised I didnt! Grin
Thanks for the input everyone.

Jackson is not that American these days. I wouldn't associate it with Michael Jackson. DS has a close friend called Jackson (he is American though!)

It sounds lovely and I'm glad he's come around.

I think anybody is absolutely likely to go a bit doolally just before an impending birth TBH :)

BertieBotts · 28/11/2017 22:04

Harrison used to be quite American sounding (most surnames-as-names are) but was 29 in the popularity list last year.

19lottie82 · 28/11/2017 22:04

Jackson is pretty tacky, sorry.
I think you and your DH need to have a proper chat once he’s sobered up.

Italiangreyhound · 28/11/2017 23:41

Lin your issue re names is quite topical, this programme touches on it, about half way through.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/11/2017 23:48

Arthur is much better and you don't get the allegations connotation

If you would meet a new baby, get told his name is Jackson and immediately think Michael and child abuse I think you might have the bigger issue.

Makes me think of Jackson Avery out of Grey's Anatomy but I wouldn't associating him with a hot rich doctor

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/11/2017 23:54

Jackson? After that disgusting man Michael?

Yes. That's why the OP wants to call her baby Jackson. Because of Michael.

FGS.

Harebell · 29/11/2017 00:19

Is it only me who's thinking ' Arthur 2 sheds Jackson' I am quite old tho

Spock25 · 29/11/2017 00:20

Jackson? After that disgusting man Michael?

Michael Jackson was a brilliant man who was CLEARED of ALL allegations against him. You need to catch up with some very old news if you think that he was guilty of anything.

OP, Jackson is a great name. I like it spelt Jaxon but that's much of a muchness. I also think of the very suave Jackson Avery from Greys Anatomy. I hope that you go through with using it and that you can use all of your lovely personalised goods.

MidniteScribbler · 29/11/2017 00:48

I don't think Jackson is really American anymore. It's a pretty common name over here in Australia. As are the various combinations of god-awful spelling. Yes, I'm looking at your mother and judging her, Jacxsun.

Greggers2017 · 29/11/2017 01:15

I bloody hate this you grew the baby you get final say. No you are having the baby together so you should both agree unless father is not involved. It's not as if the dad has a choice to grow the baby is it, so that opinion is very unfair.
I do however think you both need to agree on a name. OP he's probably just saying it as he's had a drink. My DP comes out with all sorts when he's had a drink.
I hope you can come to an agreement

TheClaws · 29/11/2017 01:45

Actually, ‘Jackson’ means ‘son of Jack’. The surname has just been transferred to several varieties of forenames: Jackson, Jaxson, Jason, etc. So there’s that. Smile

TheClaws · 29/11/2017 01:46

Not Jason, autocorrect! Even autocorrect hates Jaxon!
