YANBU. What really pisses me off is the way we're told that the UK needs austerity. People died in incidents like Grenfell tower because of councils cutting their budgets by up to 40%. Sick people are having their medical care sold off to Virgin. More people than ever rely on food banks. The government appears to be at war with disabled people. But we apparently can afford to pay millions on security for events like this?!

And the constant harping on about it in the media underlines a view that some people are worth more than others because they were born into wealth and privilege of their own in addition to being bankrolled by the state!

I don't hate them as individuals but I do hate what they stand for.

Some royalist arse had the cheek to come on my Facebook page and tell me I'm not allowed to express this view - this is how brainwashed people are.

Quite.

Why dont they get married in the US and have Harry, her and her parents foot the bill as a private individuals wedding.

BeyondAssignation · 29/11/2017 10:04

Most benefits are only payable while you live in the UK anyway...

havanesehope · 29/11/2017 10:18

Totally with you op WinkWinkWink

FlowerPot1234 · 29/11/2017 10:23

£20m absolute minimum for security alone paid for by you and me, for the wedding day. Whilst the NHS cuts mental health services and could save lives with that £20m, a cause Harry claims he cares so passionately about.

lottieandmia22 · 29/11/2017 10:29

Quite FlowerPot. It's a joke.

lottieandmia22 · 29/11/2017 10:30

Also why are royalists so nasty and defensive when you point this out (talking about my own family here)

Uumellmahaye · 29/11/2017 10:31

Me too - have clicked lots of articles saying 'not interested'

I thought the guardian cartoon summed my feelings up perfectly

southeastdweller · 29/11/2017 10:35

£20 million got security? Where did you get that from flowerpot? I just read that the cost of security for the last Royal wedding was £7 million, which he paid for, not £20 million. The rest Prince Charles paid for out of his own money.

Was discussed on the news last night and is the figure being discussed all over media this morning.

I just read that the cost of security for the last Royal wedding was £7 million, which he paid for, not £20 million.
I didn't say anything about the last Royal wedding at all. I didn't say the last Royal wedding cost £20m. Hmm

The rest Prince Charles paid for out of his own money.
So what? Prince Charles has not (yet) said he is paying for any of this security, or any of the other costs that the taxpayer would fund.

southeastdweller · 29/11/2017 11:27

I can’t find anything about the £20 million for security. Maybe you could provide me with a link?

I mentioned the security cost of the last Royal wedding to compare with the estimated cost of this one, just seven years later. And likewise, I think it’s a fair assumption to make that Prince Charles will again pay for the rest of the costs, as he did with his eldest son.

meditrina · 29/11/2017 12:35

The security costs will be considerably lower than a London wedding because the castle has a secure perimeter and access can be controlled.

If VVIPs (such as foreign HofS) who would receive government protection come over, then yes there's a bill landing all at once, but they'll be having working meetings during the visit as well and weMd be paying whenever they came. But probably fewer of them at this occasion as it's clearly going to be smaller than the full State shindig.

AuntieStella · 29/11/2017 12:36

I think now might be the time to channel the credit card ad which inspired the Jonny English films

'and the vicar has no previous convictions.....'

NamasteNiki · 29/11/2017 12:48

Why has she already jumped straight into being a full time royal?

Is there any reasons why these parasites cant work

Soubriquet · 29/11/2017 12:54

Oh? Is there another royal wedding happening?

I had no idea

Yanbu. Ffs shut up already. We get it! A man is marrying a woman. Whoop de fucking do

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 29/11/2017 12:54

You might be "fucking sick already" of a wedding, but I'm "fucking sick" of all the whining, complaining, miserable twats out there.

This.

They both seem like very nice people, the royals do have an influence and it's quite the step for one to be marrying outside what is the norm, and a bit of a win for WOC. Bloody bored of moaning minnies

southeastdweller · 29/11/2017 13:27

Bloody bored of moaning minnies

Yep. Boo fucking hoo - what good are they doing by whining? It’s going to happen regardless of the moans.

BiglyBadgers · 29/11/2017 13:29

Nobody on the thread is trying to stop them getting married. Confused

southeastdweller · 29/11/2017 13:34

Yes I realise that. But what does moaning about something you can do nothing about whatsoever achieve?

HuskyMcClusky · 29/11/2017 13:37

Since it’s everywhere, it’s now really annoying me not knowing this: is her name pronounced Mee-gan or Meg-an??

BiglyBadgers · 29/11/2017 13:39

Discussing the things we do not like and would like to change achieves a number of things:

  • it makes those who may not be the majority view point feel less alone and shows them that other people also feel the same way at they do
  • it presents an alternative point of view for other people who may not have considered it
  • it allows a perfectly valid and legal expression of anger at something that many feel has negative consequences for them and others.
  • if enough people question the status quo than things can change. If lots of people say they are unhappy with the reporting on the royal wedding than that reporting would change
Dozer · 29/11/2017 13:43

Diana was praised for “using her position to do good” on important issues like landmines and HIV. Similarly Harry and William speaking about mental health, the games for veterans etc.

I can understand slebs using their fame to become “ambassadors” or activists, as Meghan Markle has done. Angelina Jolie. George Clooney is more annoying. But it’s presumably the UN and others’ money funding them.

But I have a huge problem with taxpayer funding of the royal family, and with the media praising them for using their unearned wealth and privilege to highlight issues.

I would rather taxpayers’ money went elsewhere.

lionguard · 29/11/2017 13:44

Diana is remembered verey differently posthumously, as is usual.

At the time she was ripped to shit in the media for speaking out

nornironlady · 29/11/2017 13:53

It's been almost impossible to ignore on any media outlet I've come into contact with. However the freeze on working age benefits announced the very same day has had almost zero coverage despite the fact this is an issue that is likely going to affect quite a large amount of us/working families. This is real news IMO. Prince Harry getting married is a happy, human interest story but shouldn't have made the top of list over freezes to benefits.
