To ask whether you would become a royal if given the chance

munkynutts · 27/11/2017 12:00

Imagine yoy had the opportunity to become a royal. Would you take it?

I would love the money, the prestige and the legacy.

But I dont think I could hack the pressure or criticism.

So personally on balance, I would say no.

That's so true and SO depressing NumberEightyOne

We're meant to look up to these people whose main duties are look like you've had a good blow dry and don't say much.

CuteKinn · 27/11/2017 12:55

If he was the perfect guy for me I would be tempted but I don't think I'd be able to justify it morally.

lalalalyra · 27/11/2017 12:56

No, never. I wouldn't be able to stand the scrutiny. Also, you'd never be able to make any new friends again without wondering they were being friends with you because they wanted to be or because of who you were.

I also wouldn't want to bring my children up in the spotlight the way they do. Especially now with social media and 24 hour news.

No amount of money and posh houses would make up for that goldfish bowl. And you can't even just divorce and walk away because the press would stay interested for the "Harry's Ex" "William's Ex" stories so it would be forever. Stuff that.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/11/2017 12:56

Only if I could dissolve parliament and run the joint.

Ttbb · 27/11/2017 12:57

No. The money wouldn't really have much value to it. The point of being rich is that you can educate your children properly so that they can become priminister/run a hedge fund/CEO of s Fortune 500, Supreme Court judge, dean at Columbia, novel prize winning author etc. Being a royal is going to hinder that and indeed most pursuits beyond being a public figure with no real qualifications. So what's the point? You get little privacy, limited freedom and for what? A bit of luxury? I would rather work hard and earn the money so that I can enjoy it properly.

lalalalyra · 27/11/2017 12:57

Also, I think I'd be a diplomatic disaster. Imagine having to smile politely when Donald Trump came to visit. Or having to host some dictator or the likes.

I'd be accused of being political with my dirty looks or unfriendly welcome!

nomad5 · 27/11/2017 12:58

Exactly what Ttbb says.

It's a gilded cage.

ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsrname · 27/11/2017 12:58

I'd hate to be in the public eye or famous. The money would soften the blow but it just isn't for me.

ginteresting · 27/11/2017 13:01

No, I know it’s a life of privilege but it is paid with loss of privacy, public scrutiny and having to live by royal protocols. I would find it suffocating. I think I could casually pull of a diamond tiara though.

brasty · 27/11/2017 13:05

Yes, my appearance would be ripped apart. But I would try and use the position to change things and help charities, particularly more controversial causes. So I would probably use it to visit Yarl's Wood Detention Centre in an official capacity and highlight the awful ways asylum seekers are treated.
If you mean be a doll that smiles at public events, no I would hate it.

morningconstitutional2017 · 27/11/2017 13:10

No, I'd hate it. The media attention for one thing - if you step out of line, have a hair out of place, put on weight, say something a little controversial or any of the things that normal humans do, you'd be on the front page of the tabloids with a big headline pointing it out you.

Plus opening hospitals, visiting factories, attending official functions and Lord knows what else. Also I don't think that living in some ancient heap is all that it's cracked up to be. So no, no and no.

lalalalyra · 27/11/2017 13:14

I think the hardest thing would be that you could just highlight any issue you wanted too.

Like Yarls wood mentioned above - no way would any of the younger royals be allowed to be openly critical of the government by highlighting problems there.

brasty · 27/11/2017 13:15

Yes I would soon be deroyalled.

Hulababy · 27/11/2017 13:17

No. No doubt the money and the nice houses, and all that would be a nice benefit. But I can't think of much worse than being famous, being watched my whole life, having the way I look and dress pulled apart left right and centre, having my every actions criticised from whether I work enough hours to whether I was being a good enough mum and the likes, not being able to pop out and do my own thing, etc. So, any form of famous would be not something I'd want in the slightest.

brasty · 27/11/2017 13:18

I do wish I was financially secure though.

Barbaro · 27/11/2017 13:18

God no. Not for all the money in the world.

mrsharrison · 27/11/2017 13:54

Yes in a heartbeat! I would love to be the queen.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 27/11/2017 14:07

Might be nice to be one of the lesser royals - lots of the privileges but not so much in the public eye

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 27/11/2017 14:07

Maybe a Duchess, somewhere in the countryside, with a large estate

MrsHathaway · 27/11/2017 14:23

I used to look after a very minor royal who had a pretty normal life. I mean, normal for the upper class rich, IYSWIM. You wouldn't have recognised the child in the street, for example. Now has a reasonably normal Facebook page.

Sprawling landed rich life sounds pretty nice. Lots of dogs, bit of light rose-gardening, opening the odd fete, Downton style.

Just not the famous bit.

InLoveWithLizML · 27/11/2017 14:49

If you were a Royal say on the fringes of it all, so the Dukes/Duchesses Earls/Ladies who no one really knows about.

But then you've got this massive Estate to maintain, so you have to hope you're rich to make sure it doesn't fall into ruin. You also have to get your heir and spares sorted, or else the title & everything else goes.

I will say I think Wills & Harry can't do right for doing wrong. They had their parents in the spotlight from birth, so every indiscretion is out there, as Harry has learnt himself, he can't strip naked during billiards! For the amount we pay for the Royals, is it a £ per person, they bring in a lot more with trade/commerce/tourism as other country's are crazy on the Royal family.

How many 90 year olds do you know that have to do as many duties as the Queen does. She couldn't even have a bad stomach without it making news! Just what she wants, people knowing she's having to dash to the loo every 5 minutes.

InLoveWithLizML · 27/11/2017 14:59

My youngest DC whilst older than Prince George is fascinated by him. I'm glad to say more Royalists here too.

With a big house I guess you have to socialise and have dinner parties, plus host people staying. When MIL needs a bit of extra help you can hardly say but where would you sleep Grin

I don't think I'd even like to be rich, I'm happy being comfortable with lots of planning. People gravitate towards money and everyone seems to be your friend if they know you have a decent job. Lose said job and people vanish.

My friend even had it on benefits, they were getting stressed with the wait and hoop jumping. Made the mistake of saying it's sorted and people actually asked to borrow money. Which we all know is essentially give me money, as there's a minority who actually go pay day, best give Geoff the £50 I borrowed. Oh but it's so close to Christmas. Oh but I'll be short again this month. Poor lamb.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 27/11/2017 15:41

Good God, no. I might be skint but I have liberty and privacy and that makes me richer than the Queen.

CoyoteCafe · 27/11/2017 15:57

no, and can't understand why anyone would. It would be like living in a cage. Or a fish bowl.

Yet, like a lot of Americans, I'm oddly fascinated by them. I'm curious how much money they costs the citizens of the UK compared to how much money they bring in. I don't understand how the finances work, but someone is making a lot of money off the US's interest in the Royal family. (Which is ironic since we had a revolution in order to not be under your monarchy).

Cookiesandcake · 27/11/2017 16:55

I'd happily be a minor royal so that I could still lead a semi normal life, but no way would I be a major royal. It would do my head in having to behave in a certain way all the time and not being able to do what I want
