He offered to throw his drink away!

AIBU- at lunch, with both children and their dad, who’s not around during the week. 2 year old says she doesn’t like the fact he’s got squash and she’s got water. He turns round, completely genuinely (!), and says “oh, shall I throw mine down the sink?”!!!! She says yes, and I interupted just before he got up from his chair to throw away his drink, because the 2 year old didn’t like him having it!!!!!! She’s 2! We are grown ups! We are parents that are supposed to set boundaries and teach them to deal with life!! AIBU??!!

Ooh just remembered I do drink turmeric milk before bed a couple of nights a week and have half a lemon squeezed into warm water at breakfast most mornings.

Mrsbird311 · 26/11/2017 11:51

Why on earth should the dad say ok and do as a two year old says? The only answer is because I’m an adult and you are two years old and do as you’re told, bloody hell these parents who let their babies dictate what an adult drinks are letting themselves in for a lifetime of grief

00100001 · 26/11/2017 11:53

Squash is "vile"?

Are you sure you had squash? And made it up correctly?

What flavour was it?

BakedBeans47 · 26/11/2017 12:06

I find it hard to believe that squash is more “vile” than turmeric milk. That sounds utterly revolting.

dolfinne · 26/11/2017 12:13

We buy squash to have after long runs, as we hate the taste of energy drinks like lucozade or powerade. Dp sometimes adds a pinch of salt to his when doing marathon/ultra training

SaturdayNIghtAtTheMovies · 26/11/2017 12:16

I'm pretty sure I can make a glass of squash... and drink those prepared by others who are more versed in squash making...

I've had orange, orange and pineapple, lemon, pink grapefruit, blackcurrant, apple and blackcurrant... I don't like them. They have a funny acrid 'taste' and leave an odd sensation on my tongue. They don't quench my thirst and I just don't like them.

They are disgusting chemically things. Not nice.

SaturdayNIghtAtTheMovies · 26/11/2017 12:17

Turmeric milk is lovely before bed.

Bluntness100 · 26/11/2017 12:18

How bizzare. I’d simply have said would you like some squash darling. On this I’d lead by example.either water for everyone or squash for everyone.

I wouldn’t sit and eat chocolate in front of an two yer old either, whilst telling them they couldn’t have any.

It’s just a bit shit to eat or drink something they really like in front of them whilst giving them none and making them watch. I really can’t understand why the child couldn’t have had a little sugar free squash in her drink.

MuseumOfCurry · 26/11/2017 12:19

Totally agree, but at the same time I wouldn't drink something around my kids that is feasibly drinkable by kids, but not allow them to have it.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 26/11/2017 12:50

I don’t think that toddlers should rule the roost but I don’t think you should rule out something they’ve said when they have a point either. I wouldn’t have thrown the drink because I wouldn’t be having a ‘nicer’ drink that they could have in front of them anyway but if for whatever reason I did I would either have let them have some squash and/or made sure I was setting a good example by drinking water in future. I don’t think a do as I say not as I do attitude is going to teach them that drinking water is a good idea. More likely they will just feel jealous about the juice. If you think it’s important to drink water then tou need to make it a family habit and show others enjoying it. Imagine trying to get a toddler to enjoy vegetables on their plate while all the adults had a side of chips and no vegetables. It wouldn’t happen.

bruffin · 26/11/2017 13:04

saturday

Are they ones with artificial sweeteners in. No squash tastes good with AS in.

bruffin · 26/11/2017 13:05

I also live tumeric milk.

bruffin · 26/11/2017 13:05

Love not live

HousefulOfBoysNow · 26/11/2017 13:10

I do, often enough. If we have dinner out, it's often on a weekend and later than our usual dinner time. I've noticed with both dc that drinking coke too late (even in lesser quantities than squash or water) results in a peed bed.

Hence they often aren't allowed fizzy, yet I still have a glass of coke.

They don't argue or whine about it as they know that coke is a special occasion treat for dc only.

SaturdayNIghtAtTheMovies · 26/11/2017 13:15

bruffin some of them will have been, but I didn't like them as a child either particularly and I don't think they'll have been the sugar free/artificial sweetener ones. Although I do remember having C-Vit and that was ok, but I didn't like Ribena.

I find most people make them up too strongly too.

CherryZee · 26/11/2017 13:30

I've said in a pp that I don't know any adults who drink squash.

I thought that such a serious subject should be given more thought.
It has occurred to me that there is a famous squash brand which is advertised as being the one preferred by Wimbledon tennis players, and they are all grown-ups.

Also, when I find myself yet again in the pub, but have used up all my alcohol units for the week (and then some) I will often have a lime and soda. I wouldn't class lime as squash though, I see it as a mixer.

It appears to be all very complicated.

CherryZee · 26/11/2017 13:31

Squash also used to make my teeth go funny when I was a kid.
Sort of sticky and acid.

ConfusedLivingDoll · 26/11/2017 13:33

Squash is a bit unpleasant, but better than water!

CorbynsBumFlannel · 26/11/2017 13:59

Avoiding bed wetting is a valid reason for different drinks though. You need to have healthy stuff but I don’t isn’t.

NetRunner · 26/11/2017 14:04

I agree with you. A 2 year old and an adult are not equal. His response should have been to teach her that you and he make decisions on her behalf, because you are her parents. She can't always have what you have and has to learn to respect that - he certainly shouldn't be teaching her that she can rule the roost! Had she already had any squash that day? If so, what about saying: you had your squash earlier. Daddy is having his now. Perhaps not the most judicious choice to have squash in front of her as it is bound to cause a scene and then you have to try to rationalise with a 2 year old which is notoriously difficult. But having done so, it's important to respond in a way that doesn't teach her that she is in charge of what daddy does or that she is right to expect him not to have something just because she can't...

MyKingdomForBrie · 26/11/2017 14:11

To allow a 2 year old to make rules that adults have to follow is just wrong, IMHO.

Children like boundaries, it makes them feel safe. Squash will rot their teeth, dentists advise you do not give it.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 26/11/2017 14:18

I drink squash Blush Absolutely love it.

But no, I would not throw mine away as a child asked me to. In that situation I would simply ask the child if they wanted squash?!

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 26/11/2017 14:19

Mind I also eat ice pops. Which is apparently a child thing. And love twister ice lollies, and iced gems.

ConfusedLivingDoll · 26/11/2017 14:20

I love party rings. And cheap advent calendar chocolate.

SaturdayNIghtAtTheMovies · 26/11/2017 14:27

Hm... I don't like party rings or cheap advent calendar chocolate either. And Twister ice lollies are just wrong.

I don't like ice cream in general though.

There must be two very different sorts of people! Grin
