to not understand how it is legal for the Daily Mail to pull stories from Mumsnet?

Surely its breaching some kind of privacy law? I couldn't copy someone's post and put it on a blog and reversing the situation, if I were to promote my own blog/writing on here it would be taken down so how is it possible for the Fail to repeatedly get away with taking information off here and using it?
And blatantly linking to the site too! Using people's usernames etc etc.

I know that they are scumbags anyway, but I can't understand how they get away with it?

No. You're posting on a public global forum.

A few years ago journalists had to be really good, with lots of experience and knowledge, to get on to an evening newspaper in a big city, let alone a national.
Now, due to new contracts with far worse shifts and massively lower pay they take new graduates with little or no experience.
They don't let them out of the office on jobs - that's time consuming and expensive - so they trawl the internet for stuff to write about, measuring what does well with readers and what doesn't.
If mumsnet thread stories are well read, they'll carry on reporting them.

Hey folks, thanks for your comments. This subject has come up quite a few times on the boards, but we're happy to explain how things stand with regards to other sources lifting threads from MN.

As many posters have pointed out, unfortunately there’s not a huge amount we can do about it - the DM would likely claim Fair Use and that would be difficult to challenge. They would say they're just 'reporting' what was said on the thread.

Being an open site does bring many advantages, but this kind of thing is a consequence of that, we're afraid. We always like to remind our users that this is a public forum, searchable by Google, legally linkable to - and quotable by - all and sundry.

Just posting to join the ringle fan-club. There should be more threads with explanations by ringle .

It’s all in the privacy policy Copper! Things may change in May 2018 I suppose

Not copyright but important I think.

My issue is that the DM have not checked any source out.

Just because someone has said something doesn't make it true.

Anyone could make anything up about anything and the newspapers are printing it as fact not fiction.

As for
I'm a health researcher and we use data from Mumsnet all the time for research purposes

That is very worrying

ringle · 28/11/2017 11:37

why? (genuinely interested)

Verifying a source has never been top priority for the DMs to be fair though. Grin

They don't have to. All they are doing is reporting what is posted. You can choose to believe or disbelieve what is on here whether you read it direct on in the Mail.

That is far more worrying. There is clearly made up stuff on here but a researcher has no way of telling whether the plausible posts are real or not.

Oh what fun you could have.

The moon is definitely made of cream cheese.

Aliens are running the country

I know someone who has met the real Harry Potter. The books and films are based on a real person. He lives in Hampshire.

Wonder how far you could take it.

Oliversmumsarmy · 29/11/2017 03:34

Grin probably should have put this as an indicator I was having a laugh otherwise it could escalate
