AIBU to ask what you give your cleaner

For Christmas, that is?

This will be the first year I will have had a single, consistent cleaner all year and hopefully into the new year and beyond.

So for her last clean before Christmas, I would like to give her something, but I don't know what's appropriate? A bottle of champagne and/or chocolates or something? Or perhaps a cash bonus? And if the cash, how much - in percentage terms - on top of what I pay her weekly?

I give my cleaner a weeks wages as a minimum. Some have been so good so I give them more. I don’t think a gift is appropriate as I am sure they prefer cash. I put it inside a Christmas card. If I don’t need them for Christmas Week I add the money I would usually pay them as well as the extra week.

I got mine a bottle of wine and some chocolates last year.

Don’t think she was expecting much though because I’m a single mum in a council house

A week's wages.

Flight from UK to Spain (her home) and 13th month salary.

She's more of a household manager / nanny / cleaner though. We're her only employer.

Posh scarf - deep burgundy, so nice I bought a bag to match!
Grey check wrap from M&S - def not my shop but I love it!
Toiletries set from The White Company - never would splurge on myself from there!
Cup and tray set from Laura Ashley - with chicken on as I have a love for them!
Posh make up bag from Boots - bigger than mine and great for cheeky week ends away with dh!!

As much as a cash bonus would have been handy if know it would have just been put to dc Christmas gifts!!
As I have no relatives (dc +dh only) it was lovely to have gifts!!

Mine has cleaned for me for about 5 years now so she’s more of a friend.

I always give a bottle of champagne and box of posh chocolates. I also always ask where she would like a voucher for, normally she picks a toy shop and gets her dc a few bits.

Wine, Chocolate, Candle , Nice wash stuff would be ok, but if you’ve the money I’d give a small bonus or voucher of whatever you think is appropriate.

Our cleaner has been coming consistently for 4 years now and she is amazing, real grafter. Give her a £200 bonus at Christmas but usually the second week in December so she has it before xmas.

That is the equivalent of 2 months 'wages' from us.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's seems there is no "standard" gift or amount to give. But I think I'll go with some extra cash as well as a small gift too. And giving it early as per @IceFall's suggestion is a great ideas. Thanks

I've been a cleaner. A consistent one

In my time i've received a gucci scarf, a leather jacket a few expensive perfumes as well as v generous cash bonuses for xmas.

If you don't know her taste at all then give cash, but i wouldn't assume cash is what all cleaners want. That's a bit Dickensian.

I know mine loves Prosecco so it's easy for me!

Laiste I don’t have a lot of spare money, and make most of our Christmas presents... our cleaner comes every two weeks for three hrs (£30 per clean) I was thinking of making her a sweet treat and a nice card with a small bit of extra cash but it won’t be much as cash is so tight! Does that sound okay or willl we come across as tight?

I've given a £20 voucher most years but I might up it to £30 this year.

I do a week's pay plus a bottle and chocs.

I pay her an extra week usually but now she alternates it with her sister so I think I'll give them an extra week between them. Some of you are very generous!
I wonder whether those giving a lot buy more extravagant gifts though - we have an absolute max of £100 per person budget and only buy for people we are close to. I pay the cleaner £50 a week (4hrs - above average pay for my area but less than an agency) so a weeks extra pay feels generous to me :/ would feel wrong to give her as much as I spend on my mum!

Mine gets €100 in cash, so she can do what she wants with it. It's been the same for 11 years now. However, her wages have increased; I collect her and take her back, buy her lunch, and there is unlimited access to coffee.

Our cleaner always takes 2 weeks off for Christmas - the only holiday she has all year. We buy her chocolates/biscuits and pay her for the 2 sessions that she misses. I know she appreciates having the money more than anything else.
