to wonder if this mum calling for Sleeping Beauty to be banned is going a step too far, or not?

Don't worry, I've not linked to the Daily Fail.

metro.co.uk/2017/11/23/mother-wants-sleeping-beauty-pulled-from-school-because-it-teaches-bad-lesson-about-consent-7101539/

Is this taking things a step too far or has she got a point?

Oh! I can't be arsed with all this bloody rubbish. It's a fairy tale for Christ's sake. Have you lost all sense of bloody reality.
Some people are so rigid and PC they are in danger of disappearing up their own arses .

BertrandRussell · 24/11/2017 09:48

"Faux misunderstanding"
A refusal to accept that the the influences young children have in their lives can affect their mind sets and attitudes throughout their lives.
And no, that is not a blanket description of everyone who disagrees with me. It is a description of the "It's PC gorn mad""She's a stupid bitch" "She needs a kick in the cunt" brigade.

eddiemairswife · 24/11/2017 10:28

I have got copies of Little Black Sambo and Little Black Sambo and the Twins. The only offensive thing is the choice of names...Sambo, Black Mumbo and Black Jumbo for his parents. The stories are delightful and the books could be re-published with more appropriate Indian names.

endehors · 24/11/2017 10:47

Black Sambo has reminded me of Zwarte Piet/Black Peter (sorry if straying off topic, it is still a book also I suppose). My more enlightened friends call him just Peter of Pete, but many seem to still call him zwarte.

Some of the changes made to Enid Blyton were very necessary (I remember a character being smacked with a doll hairbrush as punishment for being naughty), others were silly and some have become outdated again!

BertrandRussell · 24/11/2017 11:07

"others were silly and some have become outdated again!"

Really? What were the silly changes?

nocoolnamesleft · 24/11/2017 15:01

My DM used to be a primary school teacher. I remember her doing a lesson on fairy tales, and how to write your own in your own way, but only getting the same old stereotypes as the class didn't see what she was getting at. So I wrote them one about how an evil dragon came to ravage a kingdom. So the king sent out messengers far and wide offering the hand of his daughter in marriage, and the crown after his death, to anyone who would rid the land of this peril. Naturally the princess was very unimpressed by this. So she went off, sorted out the problem with the dragon (by bravery and intelligence), came back and told her father that this meant not only could she marry whoever she wanted not who he said, but that she was more than capable of ruling after him.

Some of the girls' stories after hearing that one had changed quite gratifyingly...

Weebo · 24/11/2017 16:22

That story sounds fabulous Nocool.

You should write it again. :o

BertrandRussell · 24/11/2017 16:24

My ds had a brilliant book when she was little where the Princess rejected all the suitors but impounded their horses and stared a stud farm...

Weebo · 24/11/2017 16:37

Do you remember what it was called Bert?

Another brilliant book along those lines is The Paper Bag Princess.

Itsonkyme · 24/11/2017 17:09

There's a very rude person on here who seems slightly deranged. Disgusting language and nasty with it.
No-one is impressed!

dameglittersparkles · 24/11/2017 17:23

Is that aimed at me 😂😂

lostintranslation73 · 24/11/2017 17:30

missed the point... but reading parable/symbols.metaphors one needs to be intelligent/open-minded...so on... nowhere I can see Snow White didn't give consent for this kiss... still...the symbol is in the sleep... yaaaaawn... get a grip

Maireadplastic · 24/11/2017 17:44

Now usually I would say 'pish, tosh' to all this but actually I think these stories and myths are embedded into our children from an early and very impressionable age. We need to think about that. From these stories, certain scenarios are taken for granted and then we say 'no, this is wrong- you can't do that'. It is very confusing.
We are all conditioned which is why so many here find it unfathomable to reject our popular myths.

TonTonMacoute · 24/11/2017 17:46

I don’t imagine that many adult rapists and sex offenders would claim that reading Sleeping Beauty as children led to their offending behaviour. I would imagine that not many little boys would be that interested in the story anyway.

There are many things that we parents can do to teach our children how to behave and to respect others. Banning a fairy story, that has been around for hundreds of years, is a totally ridiculous over reaction, and this woman sounds bonkers.

GrumbleBumble · 24/11/2017 18:05

I wrote my dissertation on gender roles in fairy tales. The one with the mensuration link is Red Riding Hood - her hood colour is symbolic of her bleeding to indicate she is "of age". She is now vulnerable to the " wolf" (predatory man) if age doesn't stay on the "right" path.

BertrandRussell · 24/11/2017 18:13

"I don’t imagine that many adult rapists and sex offenders would claim that reading Sleeping Beauty as children led to their offending behaviour.

I''m sure they wouldn't.

But I am sure that someof the mindset that means women and girls put up with abuse comes from the "happy ever after""fairly tale romance" "a wedding dress like Cinderella's" narrative they are bombarded with.........

ClarasZoo · 24/11/2017 18:18

I watched Grease again recently and wondered about the moral message there too- start smoking and dress scantily and THEN you get the boyfriend!

Danceswithwarthogs · 24/11/2017 18:26

Anyone have "paper bag princess" in their house? My favourite Grin

Danceswithwarthogs · 24/11/2017 18:27

I've really enjoyed pretzels thought provoking posts too Smile

Kc1009 · 24/11/2017 18:48

Next she will be cancelling Christmas. Because having a strange man coming into the house at night is teaching kids that it's ok to 1 accept a present from a stranger and two it's ok the have a strange man in your house at night. How about cancelling Halloween too as why would you allow your child to take sweets from a stranger.

Maireadplastic · 24/11/2017 19:06

But we've had an interesting discussion here Kc. Always healthy.

Gingersdohavesouls · 24/11/2017 19:34

So she can’t teach her kids about consent? She can’t just explain to them why she disagrees with the story, instead she wants it banning so thousand of others can’t enjoy it!!

Personally I taught my daughter right from wrong, I didn’t expect her to learn those things JUST from stories!

kastiekastie · 24/11/2017 19:59

that was really interesting, but I didn't understand who was supposed to have raped her in that article? the hunter I thought and then it goes on about the king having a new mistress.

Personally I'm not madly keen on the 'so they got married and lived happily ever after' line or the fact that any older or single women are either insane (or insanely jealous) or helpful fairies. I think messages do trickle through but not sure about the comatose kiss.

niklew · 24/11/2017 20:20

I think it’s ridiculous. If you read it as a fairytale then that’s what the children will see it as. It’s not suppose to be a story based on fact- it’s fiction! She is comparing it to real life which is not what a fairytale is about. It’s about dreams and ideas. Dragons, princesses etc are all part of a children’s fantasy world and imagination. Children need imagination. Not every story needs to be politically correct as they are meant for creativity. The woman is comparing it to real life situations of non consent - when was the last time you heard of a wicked witch placing a spell for someone to sleep 100 yrs in the news. what utter tripe . She has too much time on her hands! ( as do I writing such a long post....)

muresan123 · 24/11/2017 20:46

I was amazed by this then really thought about it. ..All fairy tails and lots of old rhythms/songs are horrid!! Look at ring a ring a roses! What we are failing to do in this age of blame, is to accept as parents we don't have to tell these stories, we don't have to talk about being a princess!! It's up to parents to filter and decide..are these fairy tails wrong? As an adult - yes on so many levels. .ares a child - the age of innocence? Not at all! Subliminal messaging aside - they are stories and ultimately, just like in every other aspect - we as parent are accountable to advice and answer questions! !
