To think I should be able to get us all a respectable smartphone for <£150 each?

Plan is for all 4 of us (me, DH, DS1 and DS2) to upgrade our smartphones at the same time and (probably) all get the same model. I'm happy to pay up to £150 each and we'd be fine with refurbished phones. I prefer to get them upfront rather than paying monthly.

Options are potentially iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S5, or something else. Any recommendations or advice?

And if you think the phone you have for that budget is awesome, please tell me why, as all the information "out there" is bamboozling me.

Had a Samsung Galaxy S5 and just recently got the S7, my old S5 is still in perfect working order and I never had any issues with it :)

jamaisjedors · 20/11/2017 20:51

Loved the S5 too (my first smartphone though). DH bought it in my recommendation and is happy with it too.

Now have an upgrade (work) but not much need .

The 5s is now dating - software updates are taking up loads of space. Mine didn’t cope well, poor battery performance too.

I got a reconditioned iPhone 6s but they sent me the smaller one (memory) so I returned it.

I’ve now bought my brothers iPhone 6s off him for £200 as that was what 02 recycle would have given him.

My teenage nephews are thrilled with their Microsoft smart phones that would definitely be in your budget.

If I had no affinity to Apple products that’s what I’d go for.

DJBaggySmalls · 20/11/2017 20:55

Another vote for the Samsung, a friend has had 3 and passed all her old ones to us.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2017 20:58

I got a refurbished iPhone 6s from the ioutlet. It was one of their 'in excellent condition' ones and tbh it's immaculate. I totally recommend them.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/11/2017 21:00

My 6s was £240 though, so you wouldn't get it for your budget.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 20/11/2017 21:01

Both phones you mention are fine, but likely to feel very dated. Have you looked at flagship killer phones? Ie not big names, but with all the function of them. Try looking at huawei, honor etc amazing value for money!

YesThisIsMe · 20/11/2017 21:03

Moto G5 well worth a look. Don’t go for Microsoft though - they’re great phones but the lack of app choice is absolutely fatal.

pisacake · 20/11/2017 21:16

Apple and Samsung are not £150 brands, so YABU to look there.

I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and it was around £100 but in Indonesia, they don't sell them here except via importers. It's fab though.

I also just bought an Alcatel A3 XL it's slightly naff, but for £20 after cashback not complaining.

GingerKitCat · 20/11/2017 21:51

I have the Moto G5 with a monthly SIM and am really happy with it. I got the 2GB version but I hear good things about the 3GB. £130/£150 at Amazon depending on which version you want.

Possible Black Friday offers pending?

I have a Moto G4 plus. With a giffgaff SIM costs me £10 a month. Loads of data, free texts and calls. I don't listen to music on it so don't know what that's like but everything I do use is great. Internet, navigation, photos, calls etc

Needadvicetoleave · 20/11/2017 22:00

Wileyfox swift plus 2.

It's brilliant.

It's one my software developer husband chose for me as a 'budget' smart phone.

As it's not a 'known' brand, it spends the money on the features, not the brand.

Mrsmadevans · 20/11/2017 22:01

I have had Motorolas for the past 4 years and love them, brilliant camera seems to be able to survive my rough handling too!

magoria · 20/11/2017 22:02

Have a look at a cubot.

First phone my teenager has manage to keep for a year. Screen is cracked but that is all. Cost less than £100 for his.

TwoBlueFish · 20/11/2017 22:07

Wiley Fox Swift 2X, currently £145 on Amazon. My DH did loads of research in this price range and tried out a couple of refurbished phones but this is by far the best. Motorola G5 was his 2nd choice.

northernsoulgirl · 20/11/2017 22:07

Yes agree Wileyfox Swift plus 2, I have one on recommendation of a friend and its been great

BroomstickOfLove · 20/11/2017 22:07

I have the Wileyfox Swift 2, and really like it.

Ilovehamabeads · 20/11/2017 22:09

Ooh watching this thread with interest, especially any recommendations for good places to look, as I am also looking for a decent refurbished phone.
Sorry not to add anything helpful op.

TwoBlueFish · 20/11/2017 22:09
  • Moto not Motorola
MrsAukerman · 20/11/2017 22:10

Another vote for wileyfox swift 2plus. Also recommended by a techie husband.

HamSandWitches · 20/11/2017 22:11

Have a look on Environphone, got 2 iphones from them and they look brand new

Witsender · 20/11/2017 22:12

Exactly this. £150 or thereabouts new on Amazon.

rebbykay · 20/11/2017 22:13

I have a Huawei P9 and it is so much better than the iPhone in every way. I reckon you could grab a P8 for that amount. The P9 retails at £360 brand new. The camera is amazing!

Eltonjohnssyrup · 20/11/2017 22:13

Apparently Chinese ones off EBay are just as good as iPhones
